It's hard to complain about living in the world's richest and strongest nation, especially in the part of the country I live. I feel secure and I feel privileged. I'm proud of our history and what we accomplished, even if our past is checkered.
America is a great idea for a country, because it's based on an ideal instead of an ethnic group. Even if you're not a citizen you can be an American. You just have to want to speak, and believe freely. If I spent the rest of my life in another country, I would never be able to get rid of the American in me, even if I tried. Sorry for rambling, but your request touched on a lot of complicated stuff.
that was the point i was trying to drive home with this thread.
yes, it is sad to see so much wrong, and not being able to really help. but that's with the whole world, and it seems to have been a running struggle with all of humanity, as far back as history books can tell us. sometimes, all you can do is help yourself.
very nicely worded reply, btw. do you write poetry? if not, you should. you have the talent for it.

In rural America you'll still find a sense of community. In urban American people are too afraid of each other to be neighborly because criminals with rap sheets longer than a bus are allowed to roam the streets freely.

How is caring about other Americans going to take their freedom? If you donate to charity or volunteer at a soup kitchen, no one's freedom is being taken away.

It's true. Volunteer work doesn't make you into a dictator. It's just the general idea of the social contract, and dependency. If you are part of a group, any group, you can get benefits from it, but you also have obligations to it. Also I have been told that people can get dependent on charities, though I can't say I really saw that when I volunteered.
If on the other hand you are alone and receive no charity then you have no obligations, and you're not dependent on anyone. Therefore you are free.

The cities are a lot safer than they used to be, particularly New York. You're still right though. It's harder to know your neighbors in the city and people better lock their doors.

I'm flattered that you and Yogi like my writing. I hope to be an author someday, though that's a long time in coming. But about making the world a better place. I don't think efforts to make the world better have been completely wasted. I just feel like I have a contradiction to work out in my head.

The conundrum is quite boggling.. keep us updated on your work.
Best I've been able to come up with so far is to just be righteous, and focus on developing our own connection with truth more so than the world's; "being the change we wish to see in the world" takes god-like levels of self-awareness, and leaves very little to actually devote to the world. Ultimately however, this seems to be the most efficient path to communal joy.

A beacon of freedom, democracy and capitalism (though I'm a Keynesian).
A force for stability around the world and for smaller nations to look up to.
A cultural hotspot of a melting pot of many races and many languages spoken (and this is coming from an Australian who has been to America).
A victim of slander by the idiocies of the global New Left and from Extreme Greens.
In short, America is a great country. Unfortunately crime and social unrest is high, but this could be true for all countries due to the effects of the GFC.

This is not exactly the right spot but I didn't easily find a better one.
Since it is because of stuff like this that I think my own country is headed down the tubes; because, when we keep electing rich men that only serve their own egos, our demise as a compassionate-people should be expected. Don't get me wrong, many of these worthless leaders have turned a blind eye abroad but now they're looking inwards. Rome died from within, I suppose there's no reason not to think; a one-time great power might one day do the same,

In short, our news and reporting is fixated on the "profits of clash" while very seldom approaching anything like fair and honest reporting, and all the while, it's easier to leave...truth behind.
Ftr, I had to live 1 and 1/2 years as a beggar to win my case that should never have been denied!
