The weakest possible start

I am interested in your suggestions on how to set a weak starting conditions for yourself on a map weather it is vs human player or AI.
For example - If I wanted to sharpen my strategy with Fortress what other town(s) would be the hardest to play against. And/or what conditions townwise would be nearly impossible if other things (resources, artifacts ect.) were equaly balanced.


It may not be an interesting topic but I'll be grateful for a reply or two.

Fortress shines on smaller maps with scarce resources. Try playing it on a huge map which is quite generous resource-wise, and against a faction that benefits from it. Like Tower, or Necropolis... but I'm not sure AI is good enough at skeleton harvest. To make things harder, the map should be quite open so slow movement speed of your army is an issue.

Resource-rich maps also promote factions with good Mage Guild. Fortress tops at level3. Obviously, take a Witch as your hero. Styg sounds bad, Sorcery specialist. Direct damage spells scale badly with level and army size. Verdish specializes in First Aid. Tiva for Eagle Eye, although it might be slightly useful on a large map. Voy for Navigation. Witches tend to get bad secondary skills.

First thanks. And yes, I'm aware of the weak skills/specalty/spell level factors. I can see what you mean regarding tower and necro.   So what do you think about playing Fortress  on, let's say, L map against 3 or 4 Castle towns (free for all)? And I know most things are map-dependant, but let's say it's a map that allows you to develop a bit before meeting
opponents, like Monk's Retreat for example.

Since Fortress units are high in physical defense but rather low in HPs
and don't posses magic immunities any town strong in the magic department (Tower, Conflux) may have a slight advantage when using offensive spells.
Necropolis, Tower and Conflux additionally have slight advantages as their non-living creatures are immune to the Gorgon's death stare and likewise to the Wyvern's poison.

Furthermore Necropolis and Conflux heroes may get the first strike in combat due to their faster units (Ghost Dragons/Phoenixes).

Starting on a ground other than swamp would be another detriment when playing Fortress.

However I'm doubtful as to whether playing under exotic conditions could sharpen your "Fortress proficiency" in general.

Necropolis is quite nasty for Fortress, because weakness(?) and certainly wyvern poison don't work against undead.

When you go against Dungeon, you'll either face Warlocks with a ton of Spell Power(50%) who don't care about your Defense Skill, or Overlords who have second place in Attack Skill ranking(40%, barbs have 55%, Knights also 40%), and boost 2 good, early shooters. Losses are inevitable.

Tower technically has many shooters, but AI is not good at building Titans.

So it is safe to conclude that having a Necro, Dungeon, Tower and/or Conflux opponents on a map could be a bad starting position for Fortress...


another question if anyone cares to answer - which town would then be best to support fortress? Which town makes up for all the weaknesses?
