The Plot of Shades of Darkness (nearly insane)

I've been looking on the internets for hours now.

I can't find a single custcene compilation, a single complete campaign Walkthrough, A single exhaustive summary. Nothing.
The wikipedia and HoMM wikis articles are almost empty. Outside of the usual Marketing paragraph, and the boss fights videos, nothing can be found.

I usually find all this stuff even for extremely obscure indie games.
It's like nobody really dedicated to gaming (those who post hours of videos, write wiki contents...) have played this game (or they were left utterly indifferent).

I'm definitively interested in hearing about the plot, to keep up with the universe and stuff.
I don't own the game, nor am I ready to buy it and play through a tedious campaign just to find out (I'm slow at this game).

So, to put it more simply, What happens in shade of darkness?

This could also serve as the general plot thread... I guess.

Surprising to hear that, it had a great story too. I think there was another thread about this but I cannot remember if it was walkthrough-related or it explained the story too. I'll take some time to look into it later.

I did an entire Let's play of the thing on Youtube. Of course there's more than just story, but that's just the way LPs are.

TBH a cutscene compilation with nothin' else would be too much of a violation of copyrights. The written story and the art in each game do belong to the producing company (as opposed to your gameplay of it). Cutscenes are both those elements and nothing else.

WARNING - SPOILER HEAVY - READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION - WARNING

There are two story lines in the game.

The first one focusses on Raelag. It starts off with him uniting the Dark Elf clans, by gaining the favor of Malassa (before other Dark Elf competitors do). There's some infighting between the Dark Elves, before Raelag finally sets them off on the path to recover the Invisible Library, which was hidden in Sheogh about a century before by Kiril (in the Inferno campaign of the base game). Through the Library, he will be able to secure the future of the Dark Elf race.

The Library is among Demons, so Raelag starts to battle them and ultimately, Kiril. Kiril then uses Raelag (without his knowledge) to stage his own death so he can escape from the Demon Sovereign while at the same time putting the Demon Sovereign on the tail of Raelag. This is essentially a prelude to the storyline of Heroes of Might and Magic 5, where Raelag starts off as Agrael, a Demon Lord, before shaking that off and becoming Raelag again, to lead the Dark Elves.

The second one focusses on Vein, a Necromancer who was a student of Belketh, the ArchAngel of Death - just as Sandro was. A strange disease is eating away at the Mother Namtaru and through her, at all the "intelligent" Undead (Vampires, Liches, Fate Weavers), who are dying in droves. This limits your starting armies to just the three core creatures and eventually Lamasu's. The goal becomes to escort the Mother Namtaru to the place where she was originally created as three faces of Asha.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear Sandro is imitating others through a magical artifact, also immitating Vein to make others believe it was Vein who attacked and killed their people. The disease is revealed to be Sandro eradicating memories through Void energies, causing the Mother Namtaru to forget the things that happened during the Wars of Creation - essentially destroying her own reason for existance. Vein is then tasked to remedy this by reliving the events that causes those memories in the first place.

As it turns out, Vein was already aware for a long time of what Sandro was plotting to do, so he planted some of his memories into that of his daughter (Zakera, who accompanies him on his journeys in this game) and then used Void energy himself to erase part of his own memories to make sure Sandro would never be able to use those memories against him (and as the player, you didn't know about that either). In the end, Vein is succesful in restoring all the memories that are essential for the existence of the Mother Namtaru, thereby curing the disease that Sandro had introduced. Sandro, in turn, has grown in confidence that he can challenge the Dragon Gods, seeing how easily he had been able to almost erase an Avatar of one of the Dragon Gods.

Of the two stories, the one with Vein was a lot more story-driven than the Raelag one.

I'd like to add that Vein was in a relationship with Anastasya a few decades before the campaign takes place and they had raised Zakera together. Anastasya was furious when she realized Vein was using the girl as a weapon, by entrusting her with specific lore through lullabies. Lore that he could use against Sandro if all else fails.

As the campaign begins, Vein is summoned by Anastasya to find a cure for the disease and while he doesn't care about the Mother Namtaru, he cannot refuse Anastasya. He is accompanied by Zakera, that he doesn't recognize anymore and Ludmilla the death knight. Zakera is tears and asks Vein to avoid unnecessary cruelty and show mercy on his enemies while Ludmilla wants him to inflict upon them unspeakable horrors so that they learn to fear him.

After he fends off the advances of the haven army led by Drew Falcon, heir to the throne, he sets off to find Belketh that is already investigating the plague. Anastasya has already fallen prey to the sickness and he wants to make sure Belketh is not procrastinating in hopes for Anastasya to perish. After all it was her that Mother Namtaru chose as the grand hierophant. Belketh has found that binding the dragon souls to a skeletal body slows down the disease and together they march on Konos, the newly found dark elf capital.

After they consult the dark elves, Vein knows what must be done and journeys to the place where it all begun - the birthplace of Mother Namtaru. An area that so happens to be protected by pirates ^^ You even get to relieve Crag Hack's ghost from a curse a dark wizard placed on him so that he could not pass on to Asha unless someone willingly accepted his cursed treasure. As Vein has no soul he accepts and the spirit of Crag Hack is free to be reincarnated.

Once he brings Mother Namtaru to her birthplace, he enters the spirit world and makes her relive the wars of creation and as she regains her memories, so does Vein. Sandro's plan is thwarted but he is actually satisfied with his little experiment and he is more confident than ever that he can destroy Asha and tear through her veil. If he succeeds he can gain access to the other worlds he has glimpsed through the void, like the old universe perhaps..

Link to the let's play please!

Thanks a lot @Maurice and @Elvin.

Basically Sandro really is the good guy, but for some reason they try to depict his oponents as reasonable people. Who wouldn't want to tear this horrible spiders mutant apart? And tear the fabric itself of Asha to finally have the freedom to explore the universe?

Anyway, I did saw a small cutscene with sandro and raelag. Do they get to interract?

And is it explained how raelag really became Agrael, or is it just a premise, the start of an explanation?

The link as requested

That's actually a link to my playlists, you can probably navigate from there. As far as H6 goes, there's 5 playlists (which is why I gave a link to the playlists instead of THE playlist). The playthrough of the vanilla game took me 2 playlists, 'cause I wasn't always very good at making good progress (I got better). Then the expansions and the DLC are in another playlist. The other 2 playlists are the duels I did, mostly for the tournament that happened here a while ago, and of course the townscreen showcases I did.

Playthrough was for the grand majority on hard (the exception being the first necro map, I was still hesitating between medium and hard). I also cut a lot of the mobling battles, and certainly don't collect everything - I usually have a completion below 50% lol. Wastes of time.
Hope you enjoy!

And apologies for the self-promotion, but it was kinda requested, right? I hope you guys don't mind.

Thanks a trillion time!

Actually, your work is kinda important since right now, it's the closest thing I know to a compilation of info on the game (there may be other walthrough, but they don't show on google/youtube search). The wiki is really lackluster.
Plus you have townscreens.

Thinking of the wiki, is there any link with heroes community? Are they a bit involved?

Well, I guess so, aside from the fact that he wants to destroy life, the universe and everything just to play god in a universe of his own design .

Sandro and Raelag never really interact. Sandro mimics Raelag at one point to steal some information from the Invisible Library without drawing suspicion on himself, using Void energy to erase that information. Vein and Raelag eventually meet at the center of the Library to discuss what happened, at which point Vein goes after Sandro (Raelag is not amused that Sandro impersonated him, by the way).

How the Demon Sovereign captures Raelag is never explained, Kiril only hints at it that he's after Raelag now for having kicked out the Demons from the Invisible Library, after returning it from Sheogh.

To me, the inclusion of Raelag and Dark Elves were major strikes against buying the expansion.  The delay was strike three and I canceled my preorder after that and vowed I'd never spend money on Shades of Darkness.

Even for $5, I'd have to be really desperate to pick it up.

Actually, the Necro campaign by itself is worth the $5, in my opinion. It's really good.
