Joonas Hyrule Total War AAR, cluttering the main thread no longer!

Zora Dominion

The Zora are an elder race whose origin traces back to the times of ancient Hylians. They are an aquatic species that resemble humanoid fish but while they display many characteristics of aquatic life they also have vestigial mammalian traits (such as female chests) that imply they might have had mammalian ancestors. Some scholars believe the Zora might have originally been an artificial cross of the feral River Zola and Hylians of ancient times. Regardless, the Zora are a fairly dominant force in Hyrule. They admire physical beauty above all else, and believe themselves physically superior to all life. An average Zora spends most of their life forcing their body to grow into certain forms through the use of constraints and manipulation. As a result most Zora are unnaturally thin and graceful, and they have little tolerance for any Zora who does not abide by this custom. The Zora's need for appearing perfect reflects in their military force as well. Their soldiers usually are outfitted to look more imposing rather than fight and perform effectively, and most of their armor, weapons, and outfits are designed for form over function. For this reason the Zora generally are not very durable, but their high discipline and morale usually helps them last longer in a fight when most soldiers would make a run for it. They also have a natural advantage in the water, an advantageous trait none of the other races can claim to have.

What happens when a Zora of higher standing with grandiose dreams for the future, and even more grandiose beliefs of himself, gets appointed to the position of a supreme commander of the dominion? Herein begins our story…

Today I was appointed the Supreme Admiral with supreme control over the beautiful people of our unrivaled dominion. This is a task not to be taken lightly, the future of, not only our people, but all other Farore’s creations not yet embraced by the light of Nayru. I shall make it my highest priority to bring the light to those lost in the dark. Right after my own gorgeous looks, of course. Looking around us with the barbaric Gorons; the powerful children of Din to the north, the playful Kokiri; loved small ones of Farore to the south and the mighty Hylian Kingdom of Hyrule to the west, it is clear to me that east is where we must take our light. I have heard rumours of the gathering of the great fairies in the distant ruins of Tarm, they would surely understand my ambitions and aid me in this quest. Their glitter is also a highly valued commodity in the upper class balls. But first, preparations have to be made, supporting infrastructure must be built, armies must be raised. For this reason an overview of the current Dominion affairs is timely.

This is the current area under supreme Dominion control, we are currently limited to the Dominion Valley, Dominion Pass and Dominion Outskirts. Dominion Valley holds significant deposits of gold and the Domain Prime is our main source of fish. The long valley leads to the rich lands of Hyrule, a respectable Kingdom with appreciation for aesthetics. There’s also a small canyon to the woods of the Kokiri. The Dominion Pass is our northern border against the Death Mountain Range and eastern against the Spool Swamps. Dominion Outskirts holds the Dominion’s apple orchards and is well protected against the hills of the forest border and other dominion regions.

Domain Prime holds the Royal Dominion Palace, from which all the affairs of the Dominion are handled, seating the high command as well as the royal family. Here is where I will direct all matters. The old shrine of Jabu-Jabu is also located in the Domain Prime and brings a steady stream of travelers. While this is our best suited spot for training a professional army there are more pressing matters. The price of Goron gold price has nearly doubled in the last few years and as such the current prices of decent accessories are sky-high. The suffering of our people due to this shortage pains me greatly, with the construction of our own mining in the domain, the price of golden accessories should drop to reasonable levels to alleviate the suffering. This should also net in a nice inflow of cash for the spread of the light. It would also mean I could procure the new headband I have long dreamt of.

Nayrunis is a safe little town with nothing but some apple orchards. It is also rather far from Doman Prime. A perfect place for an embassy! No more lingering Gorons in Domain Prime.

Rutoval will be our outpost for the Goron gem trade. As such it will have need of proper roads for the wagons to travel through. These roads will also allow good supply lines for our advancing troops to the east. This will become increasingly important the further my plans progress. And progress they shall, I have already set in motion the mobilization of our army. Now if only I could get the King to take action other than stuffing his disgusting body….

Hyrule Total War 3.1 with Jakeford’s Buildings and Units mod v4 + some extra modifications by yours truly(mounted unit stat/price changes, unit weight modifications, army movement points drop, more ports, slightly richer sea of storms regions)

House Rules:
- Saves are for crashes only
- All battles manual
- No artillery/cavalry spam, reasonable army proportions
- Medium/medium
- Some hidden house rules, no spoilers

PS. Nayrunis really does have apples but due to a bug the apples in Hyrule Total War are tin and actually mineable. They’re pretty low value with 125 for level one mine so we’ll ignore them now.

The preparations for the campaign are progressing mostly as planned. Rutoval engineers finished their work on trails in the Domain Pass province. With this our base for securing trade from the Gorons is ready. To secure these newly created routes I immediately ordered them to begin work on creating basic armouring facilities in the village to prepare for the commission of troops. There was a lot of complaining from the local population that they wanted gardens instead, who doesn't want gardens, really  but as I explained them that the Gorons would be visiting more often, they quickly agreed that weapons were a great idea.

On the other hand, the mobilization of the army is proceeding slower than expected. We haven’t managed to equip more than four companies of infantry. While our infantry is rather capable and their skills are high these numbers are simply not acceptable. We will need more if we are to progress as planned. I have already taken action regarding this but the reaction of the army has been slow and they are doubtful of the importance of this to our people. What obnoxious fools.
*knock, knock* “SIR! THE-” The doors to my office fly open as an obese man waddles in.  Yes, sadly, this is the King of the Dominion,   Zora Farkos Do Bon the XVI. A lazy disgusting man with no grace. Regardless, he is still the King. This is a good sign.
“What brings your Majesty to grace such as me with your...presence?”
“You are mobilizing my army.”
“That I am indeed. Military is required for this campaign. I was just planning on calling forth the octoriders to-”
“You shall do no such thing! I shall ride to battle with my personal guard,” with that the King turns and tromps out of my office. What a splendid turn of events!
Now I don’t have to worry about the army anymore, with this they are required to take swift action. The generals and royals should be outfitted to march out in no time. It is a good thing that the King’s laziness is only rivalled by his cheapness. The shock of hearing about the mobilization of the army was quickly gone as he realized how much more the octoriders would cost compared to the regular infantry. Luckily for us the King has his own riders, now we can delay the cavalry for a little while longer. The King might not be one to charge first to the battle with our troops but he does have a sense of tactics and is good at staying alive. He also saved us a considerable amount of coin to spend on other matters…

“Javan! Get in here!”
“Yes, sir. Sorry for the earlier, sir. I shall-”
“Never mind that, I want orders sent to the Nayrunis company that they are to scout out Jabun Glen and I want the report on Val Jabun on my desk in one month. The second Prime Company is to join them.”
“As to what comes to the King and his riders, send them and the first Prime Company up to Rutoval as soon as they are ready to leave.”
“Yes sir! I shall deliver your orders,” he claps his fins together and leaves.
Things are progressing well, quite well indeed.

Early this morning I got the report on Val Jabun. Guarded by nothing else than some conscripts and a country bum thinking himself of a general I ordered the two companies to lay siege. They are more than fit to handle such numbers. No reason to chance any ambushes on the streets, we shall starve them out, no more of our few numbers shall be spent than absolutely necessary at this point.
*knock, knock* “Sir, the construction report has arrived.”
“Good, enter.”

“The King’s riders and the first Prime Company have also arrived at Rutoval.”
“Excellent, send orders to Nayrunis to begin construction on a basic trail network and tell them that I expect two ambassadors to be ready to travel as soon as possible.” Don’t want those ambassadors stuck in the god forsaken village after all. “Send orders to Rutoval that they are to continue with construction of barracks and that the King with the first Prime Company and the Rutoval company are to explore Spool Swamps and capture the old ruins there.”
“Yes, sir! At once, sir!” Javan claps his fins together and exits.
Now that the Prime economy is stable for a while, and my steady stream of new accessories secured, it is time to begin the long process of arming and training our armies. I better handle this personally, the prime elite can be quite tricky in their dealings. Especially when it involves building armouries and barracks instead of beauty spires and new bath houses.

“Can you not see that the time to act is now? Are we not obliged to not only perfect ourselves but also to help those not capable of doing it themselves to take the first steps to the grace? Even now as we waste time here bickering over the hanging gardens and the new heated bath house there are people out there, wandering in the darkness with no knowledge of a better tomorrow. Even His Majesty, the King, has taken it upon himself to bring relief to these poor souls!”
A wave of silenced cries wash over the council hall. The councilors are starting whisper amongst themselves.
“It is true.” An unnaturally powerful voice vibrates in the hall. As if Nayru herself had sent waves across the waters. A stunningly beautiful young woman glides into the hall with unmatched grace. “My father is currently at Mothulus.”
I bow deep. “We are pleasured to have been grace by your presence ‘oh Sage of Nayru.”

“If our royal blood is on the line, how can we, assets of the dominion stay our hand any longer? I refuse to sit idly by while the world needs our light.” A young general by the name of Valuto surges across the hall and comes to a halt in upright position facing the princess. “My company will be ready to march to land in the wave of a fin, your highness. We shall purge the unsightly from this realm!”
The princess raises her hand and traces the general's face with her fingers. “Such grace in such a young soul. You shall make me proud.”
“You heard her grace, we march! Should anyone wish to disagree with it come forth and present themselves for judgement for this council!”
No voice for dissonance rises from the councilors. With this the Dominion inner matters are handled for the time being.

Princess Ruto with "perverted" trait?

Very lovely so far, and they dared to tell me that Total War isn't a role-playing game. ^^

The construction of basic armourer has finished in Prime, we can now proceed with the barracks. We will need more advanced smithy to equip our more advanced troops, but this is a start. Rutoval finished the construction of their barracks, I send them orders to begin work on expanding their town and start the training of their second infantry company. They are to take upon the duty of guarding our northern border with the Goron as soon as they finish their rudimentary training. I also ordered the recently mobilized second Rutoval Company to assist in taking Val Jabun.
“Javan!”
“Yes, sir!” He steps into the office.
“Send orders to Nayrunis to start work on clearing the land suitable for farming. Also make sure this letter gets delivered to the newly appointed ambassador. Discreetly.”
“I shall see to it, personally, sir.”
“Good, send General Valuto in on your way out.” Javan claps his fins together and leaves to fulfill his mission.

Valuto might not be much else than a sword for the Dominion, but a sharp sword when it comes to battle. For now I have other uses for her though.
“General Valuto reporting for duty Supreme Admiral, my companies are ready to march onto land!”
“At ease general, I thank you for your swift action on this matter. What can you tell me of the status of the rest of the army?”
“We can expect another two companies to be mobilized reasonably quickly but after that the army can’t detach any more units from their regular duties.”
“I see. Your orders are to secure the western border and establish proper surveillance over the bordering lands. Return as soon as you have finished.”
“Yes, SIR!” She claps her fins together and snaps to attention.
“And one more thing.” I take one step closer.
“Sir?”
“Love your fin cut. Very elegant.” I reach for her left forearm fin.
“Thank you, sir.”
“Nayru’s love on your way.” I brush her fin away. She claps her fins and leaves.

“Sir! Report from our ambassador. He has completed his mission successfully.”
“Excellent! With this our trade with the Gorons should be secured.”
“I think so too Admiral. I have established border controls at Undunga Pass.” A blue-shaded figure is projected from the pool in front of the window. A strikingly beautiful figure not a night over 20. But looks can be deceiving. With her transcendence to sage came immortality.

“Javan. Dismissed.” Javan claps his fins and exits. “Thank you for saving me the effort, your grace.”
“Oh please, spare me the formalities when it’s just the two of us.”
“As you wish. Princess. Surely there is more to this than simply informing me over the status of the northen border?”
“Mmm-m, you might say I have taken an...interest in this campaign of yours. I always keep track of those of interest to me. Like dear Valuto, she has established a border checkpoint just before the Kokiri canyon.”

“With our currently limited resources that is a sound choice.”
“It is indeed, I shall continue to arrange the border guard until the new company is ready to take over here in the north. I’ll be seeing you, my dear Ad-mi-ral.” She waves her hand and the projected image flickers and disappears.

The barracks in Prime were finished today. Construction on blacksmith and training of a new infantry company will begin later today. With our army 90% mobilized and basic economy established it is a good time to look at our finances.

Most of our income is from taxes as we have very little natural resources, some from farming and the rest comes from the newly established mines in Dominion Valley plus from the tourists pulled in by the Shrine of Jabu. The sad truth that for now the wages of our generals is on par with the upkeep for the whole of our army. For now we shall hire some Geru mercenaries from the Spool Swamps to take up the slack in our army.

The Geru are not very bright and even less elegant but this makes them perfect front troops infantry to throw into the enemy formations before our own infantry. They are to scout out and capture the Sand Crab Cove immediately. The newly trained northern border guard company shall relief Princess Ruto’s troops from border watch and take over the Undunga Pass fortifications. She will probably want to head south ensure the safety of our troops at Val Jabun.

Also, our newest ambassador shall be sent to discuss trade with the Hyrule Kingdom. Valuto should have finished establishing a secure border there by now and be heading back.

“SIR! Val Jabun has surrendered unconditionally to our forces! They are letting our troops walk in without any resistance.”
“Send word to start work on trails immediately. Have the battalion march to the aid of the King at Mothulus. Also the newly trained infantry company from prime is to march to Galonga Pass, without a doubt the Princess has already established a border guard there with the situation at Val Jabun cleared.”
“Yes, sir!”

“Sir, there is an envoy to see you!”
“Show him in.”

“WHAT?!?”
“The Horons have declared war on us, sire.”
“Let me rephrase. WHY IN THE NAME OF THE GODDESSES?”
“I also brought the scout report from the east with me, sire. Perhaps they will shed some report on this issue.” He hands me the wrapped document that seems like someone fished it out of a swamp. It reads:
‘We do as say. Go Sand Crab Cove. See. Write. See village. Full crab. Geru want smash crab. Geru not get. White men come. White men drive crab away. Large tree with white men. Large tree smash many crab. Geru watch. Geru see. Tree large. Need more Geru. Geru wait.’

“THE BRAINLESS SCALESKINS! They’ve laid siege to the Sand Crab Cove after the Horon beat them to it.” I rub my temple and try to think of a way out.
“Where are our ambassadors now?”
“Still some travel away from both the Hylians and the Fairies of Tarm.”
“The news about this will surely reach them both by the time our ambassadors will make it there. This will severely hamper our plans. We will have to forget the gold mines of Sensei. Without support from the Fairies of Tarm our northern flank will be too exposed. Send word to General Valuto. We need the watchtower on the Death Mountain Range as soon as possible. She will know of the one I speak of.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And send someone to the Geru and tell them to retreat if the Horons sally out. Buy time. If their troops are in Sand Crab Cove what is there to defend Horon itself…”

Speaking of taxes, what's your tax preference? In medieval I tend to go for minimal taxation, though this leaves me somewhat crippled early, I still amass enough gold to fund key constructions and essential military units. (same tactic in mods) And at mid game I always have a large disposable income (overwhelming amount in vanilla medieval) to fund massive construction projects and instantly field veteran armies if needed, plus high population and a happy population is always welcome.

Depends what I'm aiming for. Never stall your economy for growing population only for larger tax base. So basically always have as high tax as you can afford. Buildings with the extra money help more than low taxes.
That does not mean very high tax all the time though. You might be aiming for recruiting a lot of units and if you're playing at huge unit size that really eats away into your population.
You might also need some specific building, usually siegeworks/roads/ports or mines from the larger town sizes so you need the population to upgrade.
There's also the fact that when you have a large empire and 20000 population cities, all of them will start rebelling no matter what you do to keep them in line due to very high squalor and distance to capital. So you actually want to destroy all growth upgrades you can once you pass the city size you want, if only you can afford it public opinion wise. You can't destroy farms, that's important to keep in mind. This only factors into very long games or specific scenarios.

Good rule of thumb is to always have low taxes in small settlements and high in large ones.

In this mod population does not factor into town upgrades nor into unit training so I crank them to very high as soon as I can. With all the health upgrades the Zora have growth is still very high.

I sent orders to keep on building the military infrastructure to Rutoval. They started a blacksmith while Prime laid the groundwork for a larger barracks. Val Jabun started work on clearing land for basic agriculture. I’ve also received word that both the Hylian Kingdom and the Fairies of Tarm have agreed to opening borders for trade and sharing of cartographic information. Ambassador Taluto even managed to negotiate one-sided deal with the Hylians, no doubt greatly due to our new gold mines in Prime.
“Sir, a new letter from the Geru Mercenary Battalion.”
Big tree come out. Geru run away. Geru see huts. Small huts. Near lake. Geru surround huts. Geru gather. Few round men in town. Geru can attack?
Well, at least they remembered the retreating part. Send word to the King to take Horon as soon as possible. Princess will take care of pacifying the locals at Mothulus after it has been taken.
“Yes, SIR!”

“Sir, our ambassador reports of open trade and cartography treaties with the Kokiri and the envoy from the King has returned.”
“Good. Show him in.”
“Sir, we’ve had two glorious victories. Mothulus surrendered unconditionally and Horon’s defending companies were quickly overwhelmed.”
“Excellent. Take word back to the King to reorganise the troops and set out to siege Sand Crab Cove. Make sure that work on proper education of the heathens is started immediately. Also, tell the people of Nayrunis that they have the blessing of the council to expand their town.”
“Yes, sir!”

“General Valuto reporting, SIR! No suspicious activities to report from the Death Mountain Range.”
“At ease,” the young general let’s her fins fall down. “I am sorry to inform you that there are still duties I need done until you can head to the eastern frontier. The northern border surveillance network will be your responsibility. We won’t have the troops to man the border constantly.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And Valuto”
“Sir?”
“After you have finished. Assume control of the Eastern Army.”
“SIR, YES SIR!” she claps her fins together.

Finally we could begin training mages at Prime. With the appropriate facilities we could also wield blademasters. Now Prime will be connected to the road network. Rutoval will follow to establish similar training facilities as Prime. Val Jabun will be establishing large gardens on the newly cleared land. A village will be established in Mothulus to be ready to connect the road network all the way to Horon.

Our new mage unit is perfect for dispatching those Maku Trees of Horon. Their magic is very potent and can decimate companies in mere minutes. Their greatest weakness is their inability to project magic in arcs. As such they are best utilised if they can flank the enemy. The positioning of the mage unit can turn the tide of any battle, one way or the other, for their powerful projectiles are also quite capable of eviscerating our own troops, should crossfire occur.

With our new territories pacified our economy is in a state of great boon. We can afford to double, even triple our field army. Perhaps we could have fortified the northern border river after all…
