Question: Is sense motive an active skill? Do I have to say I'm using it every time talk to someone I don't fully trust or is it rolled automatically every time someone is trying to bluff me?

You have it on passively at your skill rating +10, but when you actively look for deceit/ don't trust someone, yourating +d20.
At least... I think?

Nope, it's an active skill to actually get anything from it. Otherwise, it would be a bit borked to be able to take 10 on it at all times, while a creature has to roll for bluff at all times. Also, it is an opposed skill (Their bluff vs your SM... or vice-versa), which can only be done actively.

So, in order to bluff me they would need to overcome my SM, but if they do I need to roll SM to try and overcome their bluff?

No, you have to decide to use SM, and then both of you roll. If their bluff beats your SM, you know nothing. If your SM beats their bluff, then you know if they are lying.

Ciaran just says whatever springs to her mind when people aren't saying anything for a while. You could call her vapid, but really, she can't handle long silences.

What happened to the eth-s and the wherefore-s and stuff? And you're sure it's Ciaran who does that, DG? Are you trying to tell us something here?

Been busy with other things so far this weekend. Only had brief bits of time here and there. Nothing long enough to dedicate to this. Though, I probably will have some tonight.

I'm trying to decide whether to clarify our plane-of-origin for the beastie when our high Sense Motive Inquisitor hasn't given a sign towards yea or nay, and whether or not it would be IC to Detect Evil the critter who up to this point has been non-hostile.

Nice SM. As far as you can tell, the dragon is Jesus, and he has never spoken a lie in his life. Seriously though, if the dragon is lying, you have no indication that he is.

So, the dragon did roll high enough to ID Vorbrin and Feather's deities, even though you said it only rolled high enough for Nathanial's at the end of your post? Not that I really care.

It rolled high enough to ID Nathaniel's CLASS, deity is much easier, since holy symbols are not auras. It rolled high enough to get all three deities.

In that case I'm going to skip on a Detect Evil unless someone specifically requests it. I expect if the dragon does ping, the result would put Nathanial in a coma, and if it doesn't there's no point in using it anyway.
