Just donated. I assume the HC Supporter rank has to be set manually?

I also suggest switching categories 2 and 3, because people here are more likely to be interested in M&M games than in documentaries.

Thanks for becoming the third supporter, Maurice. This helped me to track the process again - the first automation error was fixed correctly, but I found another, hopefully now also fixed. We'll see if it all works instantly the fourth time. This is done via secure automated PayPal to HC server notification.

Donations are usually non-refundable, but good point, might be worth adding a little mention.

Ok, before I posted this, we got a fourth, thanks mvassilev. And lol, my fix didn't work - it knocked out the cache completely and everyone lost supporter status! I've refreshed the cache... back to the drawing board, I'll get it sorted.

Would it be possible for ad removal to also remove the black dot in the middle, where the ad used to be, pictured here:

I'd like that removed too, if it's not too difficult.
Edit: And also to remove the "Remove Ads" link if we're already HC Supporters.

OK, I think I found the cache problem - let's see how it goes next time. At worst it will knock out everyone's supporter status for one hour if I'm not around.

Good idea Maurice about the profile indicator - added that in. When you go to edit your profile it should now tell you if you are a Supporter and how many days there are until the Supporter status expires.

You might have a point there. What does everyone else think?

The black dot is actually and empty banner table. I'll see if it can be removed along with the Remove Ads link. The templates are not standardised over entire HC yet, so these little tweaks may have to wait if I run into difficulties. EDIT: turned out to be easy - done.

On a different subject I want to ask the new Supporters to not use a new icon on your profile as means of making other people feel inferior. Some of the jokes in VW were funny, but I think it has gone a bit too far.

This is no different from claiming superiority based on yellow or red stars. And really, elitism and superiority is not something that is supportive to HC, quite the opposite. Let's not poison a new idea.

I think it would be better if we could somehow individually select which category of ads to be displayed, so that there won't be preset groups one might not like. What do you do if you want to see Shopping ads and Community ads only without there being a group?

As for the VW and the jokes, I'm not planning on employing an elitist attitude so rest assured, those were VW conversations, no need to take them too seriously. It's not a new rank or a VIP feature, we are still users like all the rest. But I'm not going to accept complaints about the feature either. I see no valid reason for people to be unfriendly towards it when it's obviously beneficial. If they somehow feel inferior because they can't/don't want to donate that is entirely their problem.

My thoughts exactly. The banner is the tallest thing above the posts table, so its absence moves the whole page up a bit. It's a bit of an eye sore seeing your page jump up and down depending on what banner got chosen this time. Making an empty placeholder the size of the banner until you think of something better would improve the situation.

I agree. I am not sure how easy or difficult it is to realise, but I'd say give each category a tickmark. If it has been checked, the banners from that category are shown, otherwise they're hidden.

Community banners should probably show for everyone (as it is the case now, right?).

Thanks to Galaad and Orzie for becoming supporters. It looks the automation is working properly now.

Good point about the changing height and spacing of the header. I've inserted a blank invisible table as an ad substitute and now the header spacing remains exactly the same with and without the ad.

Swapped ad filtering tiers 2 and 3 (M&M Games and Documentaries), also made the drop-down ad filtering menu easier to follow.

Yep, community banners will show for everyone.

I see your point about ideally having checkboxes next to ad type. However, this would involve a different system for the storage of preferences because the current tiered system requires just one digit per user. I think that the current tiers will satisfy most users, so I'd like to leave it as it is for now and we can revisit this again in the future if there will be multiple users who really can't customize the ads the way they want.

Thanks for the change.
I just have a minor suggestion - why do we need an invisible table to substitute for the ad? It makes the header look excessively large, IMO.  I think one of the advantages of not having ads is having less wasted space, so it'd be nice if the header became smaller when ads are removed.

Because the size of the header then differs depending on whether you have an ad there or not.

I have a suggestion which I guess should have been a long time coming but I guess either was overlooked or plainly unwanted, but since I have it based off of what I see happening now in this thread, I might give it a shout.

On the left sidebar, you could make ranks and default text pop up as anchors (a href) links to the profile. If a poster has no avatar, you cant access his profile, which is kind of obnoxious. Why am I posting this here you might ask? Because I feel there is substantial reason for people to be linked to a page where it is explained what the HC supporter is for, what it does, how it benefits the community or something. I havent followed if it was added into the COC but I feel like such a feature deserves a full dedicated marketing sort of page AND a link to it from the "HC supporter" tag you acquire.

Yes, I think that's an advantage. You pay to get ads removed and are rewarded with a smaller header.

But the problem lies in when you have some pages where the ad is visible and some pages where there is no ad. So you might have multiple pages or if you're visiting pages in rapid succession, or refresh a page, etc. and the header size change makes the page jump around when you switch in between.

Ultimately, I'd suggest replacing it with a special banner. Something that would not change, but instead replace the blocked banners and add to the aesthetic of the page.

For example:

Sounds like different users have different preferences as to whether have consistent headers, to save space, or to implement PPP (pro-Pandora-propaganda). We'll stick with consistent headers for now (no offense to Pan here ) as I might use the space for something useful and banner-sized in the future.

@TDL: Sounds like you haven't noticed the link to member profiles below each post Good point about the lack of explanation of Supporter feature though. I've added a little FAQ link in the member profiles, also added one for QPs while I was at it. I don't want to make the Supporter feature a "hard-sell", but if you think it is still not adequately explained (it is in the FAQ, linked from "remove ads" in headers and from view/edit profile sections) feel free to make suggestions.

Added an extra perk: HC Supporters will not see any banner ads on Heroes 6 and Heroes 7 Wikis on Age of Heroes. You will need to be logged into the wiki with your HC account for this to work.

Wikis are separate from HC, so the system works a little differently there - all ads will be switched off for HC Supporters (no filtering options) and unfortunately this perk won't apply to HC Moderators.

Got a question about the idea - wouldn't AdBlock, used almost by everyone and everywhere, remove ALL the banners, including community ones?

Adblock will block most of the banner ads at this stage, but probably not the community banners because they will be hosted locally.

Using adblock, however, is like riding the bus without the ticket. The user with adblock enabled will be getting all the benefits of the web site while preventing the web site from generating advertising revenue.

As long as there are no conductors, the freeloaders can keep riding the bus because other people buy tickets. But the more freeloaders on the bus, the less funds for the bus service.

The web sites take time and money to create, run, maintain and improve. The purpose of having ads is to generate revenue without having to charge the users. So here the "tickets" are free anyway and the user just has to see one banner per page which he/she can easily ignore most of the time.

The banner ads on AOH and HC are safe. There are mostly gaming banner ads from a specializing gaming ad network and some hand-picked promotions from Amazon. So if the user wants to support the site it is a good idea to add heroescommunity.com and heroesofmightandmagic.com to the whitelist or trusted sites list in the adblocking software. Some of the users who did this were surprised to discover that AOH and HC have much less ads than many web sites on the internet.

Some HC members who use ablock said that they want to support HC, but dislike seeing the ads too much, or feel afraid that even our safe advertising partners could pose a risk to their computer. This was part of the reason for implementing the HC Supporter functionality. Now these users can browse the web site without the ads while still supporting it.
