been getting it the evening.
spamming F5 works, bet the thing gets annoying fast.

Well damn, that thing appears too often now (it's 2 am here).

Yeah, it's gotten pretty serious. Threatened the web host that I will be looking for another provider if they don't respond soon.

Irony aside, I don't have a problem with those banners, though it would be a shame if people wouldn't like to donate because they'd feel silly showing it.
Maybe there could be an option to hide it for those who'd like more discretion ?

The problem seems to have eased off for now. But unless the host addresses the support tickets we might have the same tomorrow.
Moving to another web host is a huge task and AOH/HC has been on this host for several years. Usually there is about one major incident per year or so, and the rest of the time things run smoothly. This year they've upgraded the server hardware and software, and all the problems recently have been the result of this upgrade. I'll start looking into alternative hosting companies if the lack of communication continues.
The supporter icon is text, so the server load from displaying it is equivalent to adding two extra words to your post  As for "stealth supporter" feature, I think that would just be adding unnecessary connotations to a simple feature. If someone doesn't want to do it, they just shouldn't do it. While on the subject, the incidence of ads for non-supporters is the same as before - one on every page. Some of the new ads in the mix are hosted locally and so they won't be stopped by adblock, but the use of adblock on HC was never supported nor encouraged.

I was tempted to also block the "empty" banner that you've put up  - to get rid of the large empty space up top. But I didn't do that. In all seriousness, though, if I'd block it, wouldn't it reduce server load since my browser won't be requesting the data for it?
As an aside, given how serious the 508 problem is becoming, might it be a good idea to post a message about it on the frontpage? With a disclaimer that it's a known issue and that you're trying to get it fixed?

The blank "banner" that replaces filtered ads for supporters is just an empty table with width and height parameters.
And I have some good news! No, the host still has not replied... but after more poking around I found a forgotten script that has been discovered by spammers, stuffed with thousands and thousands of spam entries and was using a lot of CPU. It was the H5 modding wiki. The wiki was set up many years ago by Sfidanza so I did not have much to do with it. Because that wiki is file-based I did not see the entries piling up in the database.
I'll see if I can recover useful content from the H5 modding wiki, clean it from spam and close off user registrations. I don't know if that will completely solve our 508 errors, but if they are still happening tomorrow they probably won't be as bad as today. I'll still need to hear back from the host about adjusting the limit configuration.

Yeah, hard to tell over the internet, especially when I'm tired and got server problems
Update:
There was not a single 508 error in the last day after I disabled the spam-infested H5 modding wiki.
It appears that the H5 modding wiki was compromised sometime during the last month or two, because in a backup from less than 2 months ago the wiki doesn't have any spam at all. In such a short period of time it was overloaded with several thousand pages of spam! I managed to restore a clean copy of the wiki from the backup and disabled new user registrations there to prevent re-infestation.
Hopefully that solves the problems for now. The web host, however, remains unresponsive and I am seriously considering moving to another provider in a few months time when the current contract expires. It is not good to not to be able to get ANY response at all when problems happen.

The problem has also tremendously subsided for my part.
I think it's funny to compare this "infestation" with that of a microorganism.. if the spammers hadn't been overdoing what they did, they might have been able to go unnoticed for much longer. In a way they're like a microorganism that in stead of finding a place to hide, they attack the place they depend on.
