Hey anybody know where I can find a version of HoMM2 that actually works on Windows 8?

Illegal.. I have paid for it ages ago.. No worries.. Just dont wanna go home to my parents and install it.. find a crack so I dont have to use a cd..

Illegal is good.
If you still own the original CD, the following works under Windows 7 (and possibly under Windows 8, too):
1) Copy WING32.DLL from your Game CD to C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64.
2) Copy the whole content of your Game CD to your HD and create a desktop shortcut to HEROES2W.EXE.
It may be worthwhile to simply make CD Images of all your old games, so you no longer have to visit your parents or search for old discs ...

My gog version has a working editor. It can be started from the start menu, and is named just 'Editor'.
Here is shortcut command on how to run it:
