Heroes 4 Tactics

This thread is dedicated to special tactics, that you may have discovered, defeating overwhelming odds.  After finishing the campaigns, I've learned many things, but I'll start this thread with one neat one I used.

Teleport spell/slow:

Ever noticed how tough a defending stack is, when on top of a tower, during a castle siege? (their attack/defence bonuses increase dramatically). Even though youre attacking, wouldnt you like to have  unit there?   Many 'impossible' castle sieges turned to my side, when I would eliminate an easy stack on one of the 3 towers (usually a hero), then cast the teleport spell, and place a strong stack of my own on top of it, wreaking havoc from the inside.

Another use of teleport, if you have a lone hero, having to fight a tough medium or slow speed stack:   Cast slow on enemy, then shoot or weaken them with magical spells, and as they get closer to you, cast teleport on self, and move to the opposite side.  Repeat till superstack is dead

The most awesome tactic I've seen so far is the Hypnotize/Sacrifice trick.  When you Hypnotize an enemy stack/hero it is yours to do with what you will.  This includes using it as the sacrificial stack when resurrecting your own troops.  This probably won't be too common though.

Here are a few nice tactics (and non-tactic suggestions) I've used so far (not necessarily against overwhelming odds and only against a computer):

1. Water elementals (either through creature portal or GM Summoning.  Three stacks can create a maze of quicksand on the battlefield that ruins it for walkers.

2. Split Genies/Nightmares for multiple Song of Peace/Terror to slow enemy units down for a few rounds.  Aside from that Genies are just phenomenal with Create Illusion.

3. Plague/Sanctuary:  Plague works even against the heroes/stacks hiding behind the walls.  Then cast Sanctuary and wait (if you have non-undead troops you may have to cast Sanctuary first).  Sanctuary protects everyone of your troops.  In fact you can even build a blocking force of Sanctuary creatures around a free spell caster (with Resistance and maybe the Regeneration spell) who will then devastate the enemy with spells.  One other thing about Plague - it won't affect heroes who started out as Necromancers or Death Knights no matter what their final class is.

4. Throw acid on dead stacks - it destroys the body just like Disintegrate (more useful once MP comes out).

5. For Academy and Chaos forces - don't build your level 4 structure until you know what your level 4 Death spells are (in your libraries).  If you get Vampyric Touch you will definitely want to go Titans and Hydras.

I'll stop here as maybe some of the suggestions don't really fit what you had in mind V.

Oops one more

Nobody should be without at least Basic Order magic.  In a castle siege you can use the spell Displacement to push shooters off the Towers or other stacks against the wall (where you can attack them).

Something I haven't tried...

But wouldn't it be a good strat to have a hero with 100% resistance artifact or GM resistance and nuke the enemy with armageddon. I sure look forward to using this strat

get a mass amount of genies, clone anything especially titans or devils, cast slow with each genie, and keep cloning with your big stack.

in castle seiges, get magi to poison everyone, then raise their skells, and send in the skells as fodder.  If they come out to play they'll get shot down.

Well focusing a lot on life forces now, but I think in life there are several interesting combos I have used so far.

1. Grandmaster archery, a potion of speed and tactics, your hero moves around terribly fast, you shoot twice a turn and your lone hero can take out any amount of slow creatures. Just make sure you don't get cornered.

2. Regeneration and grandmaster combat. One heck of a combination, the hero is much harder to kill. For further boosts, use whichever ward is appropriate.

3. Grandmaster tactics, it gives +5 to speed and +6 to movement. If your speed is faster than the enemy's you can actually wait then attack your opponent twice in a row. But pikemen allow their enemies no retaliation, so in fact you can wait till the enemy is in range, then attack twice before your enemy gets a chance to attack. Just hope the enemy does not get morale.

4. A comment: Grandmaster resistance, does it really make me immune to all spells? The computer has not tried any on my hero yet. Any thoughts on this?

5. Spells which have saved my cleric: Heavenly shield, song of peace and Sanctuary. However the potion of immortality is still very much necessary.

here's a fun one I just did.
3rd campaign (order) battling big necro hero with his armies.
1st round: hypnotize his hero; kill some imps; use his hero to raise some vampires for me.
2nd round: summon more vampires and kill his hypnotized hero with them

Another one I used was:

Summon+Mortyr:

Summon some useless creature (for me it was Leprechaun) and them make him take the damage from your attacking troop. If you can you should also add a Ward (whichever you need) on the defended, so the summoned won't die quickly.

Dealing with Illusions and Animated stacks

Huge stacks of Genies can potentially devastate you with the Create Illusion ability.  Unfortunately for those relying on this, know that they can easily be Dispelled or Cancelled.  The same holds true for Animated Dead creatures too.  Also unfortunately, if you cast Anti-magic on Illusions or Animated stacks to protect them it dispels them instead.

Anyway, here's another tactic using the Teleport spell.  You can teleport enemy heroes/stacks right into your own midst where your other troops can gang up on them and attack.  This even works on troops behind castle walls (which as another post pointed out is usefull for getting stacks off of towers).

all this reminds me when I was playing Heroes 3 and said, "you know, that would be so cool if you could teleport opponent's creatures"

I am wondering about an H4 item...

In the game when you right click on the item it says:

Death Shield - Gives all friendly targets Life Ward and + 30% to their melee and ranged defense.  It also gives the hero +3 melee and ranged defense.

In http://www.mmportals.com/h4/h4artifacts.html it says:

Death Shield - All friendly units with the Hero's command radius get a 25% health boost, Protection from Life spells, and 10% chance to Block attacks.

I tested it a little and found that all friendly units within my hero's command radius DON'T get 25% health boost.
I never saw any of my troops blocking a shoot like minotaurs do either.  What is life Ward anyways?  is it like all the wards only against life?  I didn`t find that spell in any site I`ve visited.

Feel free to share info about all this.

thx

- Frank

Easy: The info in the game is correct. The info on portals is not. its just a bunch of lies or rumors.

Not sure what kind of a tactic this is lol

Actually I am hoping its a bug and will be ifxed.. but anyway..

When Attacking towns early on in game, they seem to give alot of experience, esp when a hero in the town, ect..

However I discovered after having 3 of my heroes killed in a particularly rotten seige that before the battle doles ou the experience the towns temple revives your heroes.. and they get the xp.

Also I am wondering if anyone has figured out any calculations for summoning skill.. I really can't figure it out.. since I have no idea how much xp creatures give.. except that 4 scores and 7 bands level me

Lessening the effects of a Scorched Earth battle.

While everyone else is complaining some of us are playing hotseat.

Anyway, since Illusions, Animated Dead, and Summoned creatures will probably be common in battles between humans, there's a likelihood of many being won without having any regular troops/heroes left.  One way to prepare for this is right before you attack an opponent to leave a couple of your weakest troops out of the battle so that they can pick up the corpse(s) of your heroes and any items that both sides had.  This will also save you time and the possible loss of items if an opponent flees/surrenders while you have nothing but the three above types of stacks left.

This strategy works best for Life castle if you go for 2 or 3 stacks of shooters...and when you fight against shooters...you can get a no retaliation attack by placing a squire or some weak unit in front of them....if you get morale , when you shoot your opponent , the retaliation hit the squire in front of your shooter , so that is not much of a loose ( something like no retaliation
