OK so far the vote is 14 vs 8 in favor of old spells, but on the same facebook poll the vote is actually 22 vs 9 in favor of new spells. While the poll is too small to say something about the fanbase in general, it does support the idea that the crowd on HC is generally more conservative and H3 oriented than the people outside HC.

Since MMH55 is targeted at the whole group there is currently no reason to make any changes, but the poll is still open so if anyone wants to make a case...

Well then, Magnomagus, do you have a preference yourself on the matter?

It doesn't matter. I got used to H5 naming.

I like the old names, but not needing to do anything is also attractive so I'm in a win-win situation.

In general, I would prefer old spell names because it's (mostly) easier to tell what they do and their names are also easier to remember (they tend to be shorter). Also, it would feel more "right" to me if basic spells also had basic names (though of course, basic spells are typically the most powerful ones in both H3 and H5...).

On the other hand, if the mod is targeted to H5 players (who are used to the new names), it seems a bit pointless to change names "back" into H3 equivalents. Unless of course you are targetting H3 players using H5 as a platform (sorry, I haven't kept up with reading about this project enough to know). If you are targetting everybody, then I think your polling results show that it is a fine decision to not do anything at the moment (as it will get overall pretty much the same reception but with less work, as you said yourself).

Finally though, I think it should be noted that it is also largely a style decision. H5 names, not only spell names, but artifacts, skills, locations etc. tend to be more glorified and "magical" (I might say, exaggerated), probably because the style direction is like that in general (perhaps especially with graphics). It is even more apparent in Ubisoft's newer HoMM (sorry: M&MH) games. I can't say, though, whether it is better to continue to enforce the stylistic uniformity or to balance it out by using more basic names.

Anyway, the real reason I even got past the posting threshold was that I wanted to ask this offtopic question relating to your comment:

What do you mean by this, just out of curiosity? I haven't played King's Bounty so I don't know how it differs, especially mathematically.

KB and HOMM are similar games, both have primary skills, secondary skills, magic schools and might magic classes. But in KB all gamemechanics scale much better from early game to late game. H3/H5 have much more pointless skills/spells/specializations and abilities. Magic classes are weaker than might classes as soon as the map hits a certain size or a certain amount of time has passed. Both games also have excessive randomization in various places and the adventure map is not capable of scaling the available challenges to player strength. The attack primary skill is overpowered, overshadows other systems, makes combat damage excessive and combat is too much focused on shooters.

In MMH55 all those issues will be fixed, in theory they can also be fixed in H3, but not by a WOG options panel as I explained above, the game needs to be mathematically redesigned from the core because all systems are related to each other.

I prefer h5 names on general level, but mixed would be best. Some names I liked better in old games like bless over divine strength. Dispel on the other hand sounds more like prime-magic while cleansing fits light magic better. Hypnotize is somewhat stale/neutral while puppet master gives the spell more eerie/darker aspect that I like. Even in general I always felt h5 used more edgy names while the old versions sounded too neutral for my taste. On general level I liked the light magic spells of past while other schools had better names in h5. Older spells did have more clarity(you knew what it did straight from name) while new ones you might have to read the description the first time you saw them. Not that it really makes big difference which the names are used in the end

I guess this has been around for long enough. Outside HC people are overwhelmingly in favor of new spell names, so this case is closed.

end score 34 vs 26
