can I get a nice single player map?

Hi everyone,

I just started playing Heroes 4 again yesterday, and since I only play single player maps I'd like to ask for recommendation of some nice maps to suit my playing style.

I'm interested in maps (XL if possible, but smaller will work, too) where the computer stays in their freakin' side of the map and doesn't bother me at all. I want to play a game for 3 straight years if I choose to without getting harassed by the computer AT ALL!!

I want to explore, to max out the heroes and skill, etc, and only when I feel like attacking the computer and ending the game only then to do so, and I want the computer to be a tough opponent for me, as well.

Until recently the map named "black and yellow" was the only map I would play as it met all of these requirements (well, sort of, cause I already smashed the computer easily when I finished exploring everything and had to go attack him), but after, I don't know, dozens of games?? I got tired of this map as I almost know it with my eyes closed (or at least the side of the map where I always choose to start, anyway...), so, naturally, I'm looking for another challenge.

Also, I know that I could eventually download some maps from the internet and try them out on my own, but I've done this in the past and after dozens of hours into the game I had the unpleasant surprised to be attacked by the computer, to find a glitch/bug in the map that wouldn't allow me to advance past some point, or the time would run out. Needless to say that I was at least frustrated when one of these things happened, so I'd like to avoid such situations.

That's why I'm asking you (my fellow Heroes-maniacs) for some suggestions, if it's not too much trouble

So, can you please suggest 1, or 2 maps (I don't think I need more than 2 for the next 5-10 years lol) that meet my requirements? Pretty please?

How about you just go to the Heroes Map Editor and pick one of the current maps you have and just modify it a bit?
When I wanted to get the most out of the game I often went to the Map Editor and changed certain things depending on what I wanted to see, test or confirm.

I would also advise you to remove the computer if you feel it is so annoying, or do like I do, pick all factions as a human player with different towns and then explore which town that best exceeds certain goals or questions you might have.

A couple of maps that I have "toyed" with a lot are "Sea Politics", "Valleys of the Damned" and "Dragonpass".

Best of luck.

Sorry I do not know any such maps. I just want to point out that I think it'll be very difficult to have a tough computer opponent with maxed out heroes.

To delay the game as long as you please, set the diff. on maximum, then the computer won't go anywhere for a long time. If ever. But it'll also make it easy to defeat. Not that it isn't already.

I find campaigns nice in the sense that it allows for building up your hero(es) and the final battle in the final scenario can still be good.

"set the diff. on maximum" - I always do, where you also add the fact that even the map is created at max difficulty. For instance, I found a map a minutes ago that looks promising where I am land-locked by insanely strong monsters. For instance, Month 1, Week 1, Day 1 - Dozens of blackies + scores of nightmares LOL. I think I won't be leaving my side of land for the next, hmmm, 5-6 months

I even just barely built the medusa garden in day 7 of week 3, and the goal now is to build the hydra pond by the end of month 2 lol

That's the kind of map I'd like to play, and I'm sure there's many of them (maybe the ones played in MP tourneys??), I just can't find one or 2 through google. Maybe I don't know how to search for these maps?? Who knows...

The one I'm playing now was found on maps4heroes.com. No wait! I found it on the other site (heroesportal.net I think it's called...)

Anyways... if you ever find one like what I'm looking for, and you want to share it drop a link on this thread.

Thank you in advance!

I did this with my favorite map so far (black and yellow) which was nearly perfect, but it still took me half a day to make the modifications I wanted.

Imagine how much it would take me if I'll have to do this with the other maps (which don't come close to B&Y). Unfortunately, I can only dedicate some 10-12 hours per week to playing Heroes, and if I have to spend this time to modify maps, I'd rather go play dota.

I wished I had more free time (like 5-6 years ago when I was unemployed), but...

Then pick one of the maps I posted and only play vs yourself. Even though things will always be unbalanced, it should still make for a good fight and experience.

I know it might "seem" to be more of a challenge when you play at the maximum difficulty level. However, it's actually the most simple setting of all (save for novice) and the reason is simple, neutral stacks are extremely large. While you may start with 0 gold and resources, the computer tends to spend all their bonus gold away on pointless buildings like Citadel/Castle and buying more Heroes than it can actually level.
If you want a challenge vs the AI then select Intermediate or Advanced Game. By doing this you allow the computer to actually fight the neutral stacks and thus grow stronger.

I have no idea what kind of maps you are playing but from what it sounds like, it is way too difficult for you as even on a difficult map and setting it shall not take 3 weeks to build your 2nd dwelling. Then again, is this the kind of game you want? Do you truly wish to sit and click the hourglass until 2+ months have passed? (I did this once but it was boring and most certainly did not make me grow).

Maybe it is the kind of map that you want to play. But perhaps you should start with some more basic stuff before moving on to the hardest levels? If you got trouble finding good maps, then why not try to look for say, multiplayer maps, and then increase your level by playing those in single player?

I must also ask what it is, in terms of experience, that you wish to gain from the game? What is it you want to see? Which faction is the strongest? Best spells? Please, share your thoughts!

This is a new idea for me and I will try it in my future games, thank you!

@monere,have you played "The world is not enough"?
I find it very enjoyable, with many quests and much time to explore around and have interesting story.

The only problem I see with this map is that the opponent doesn't develop at all and after you open the boundaries and attack him,he is history in one round.

One of the options of the game is to give a neutral army the flag of your opponent and after part of this army(with well developed hero)surrender to you(your army is bigger),this part can join to him, making him a bit stronger.

I could give it another try with the difficulty option suggested above.

No problems at all Master_learn.
I am currently working on listing down the different ways spells, creature specials, potions and artifacts work when used in different ways and under certain (sometimes rare, yet also common) circumstances.

So far my spell page is on more than 4 A4 pages, and I have merely scratched the surface. I intend to post it or let it be uploaded to the HoMM IV guide page once it is done.
