gryphs got it. i wasn't dumb enough to hold the paperclip barehanded, or stick it directly into the socket. it was outside the socket when an arc jumped out of the socket and binded with the paperclip, magnet-ing it to the plate and causing pandemonium(girls screaming, sparks everywhere, and a good deal of smoke. fried the whole wall, lol. good thing it was only a portable classroom, and not the whole school, or i would have had to pay a pretty penny for repairs). i remember worrying my hair was going to catch fire as i pretended to be asleep at my desk as sparks rained all over me. we had a substitute that day, and i was frightfully bored. so i wound a paperclip around the metal eraser-holder of a pencil, and played around it without touching the plate. didn't expect the electricity to jump out at the paperclip.
