Heroes 5 Review

So... after a long time I decided to buy and play Heroes5. I recently completed the campaigns of all 3 games (HOMM5, ToE, HoF). Although I didn't like many of them I quite enjoyed playing HOMM5 overall to say that HOMM5 is a good successor to the Heroes series.

In this topic I just wanted to state my opinion about the game, things that I liked and things that I disliked. Let's see some of them.

+ Positive
1. I think HOMM5 shares a lot of elements with Heroes 3 for Heroes5 to be considered that it didn't head in the wrong way. It was based on Heroes3 and it expanded there.
2. Technology advances so sooner or later we would see a Heroes game in 3d. Whether you liked it or not, I think it was nice to zoom and rotate around the big variety of creatures Heroes5 had to offer.
3. The skills were made in an interesting way.You were able to choose a skill which gave you subcategories of this skill that leveling up was really enjoyable and profitable.
4. Upgraded units were really getting improved statistically unlike in heroes3 where many of them had a minor improvement. That made the game much more interesting since upgrading your units was a vital part.
5. Also, upgrading creature structures usually required a proper amount of resources to represent their power even on low tires unlike again in heroes3 where most of the upgrades were made by paying 5 wood and ore. So, just by the building requirements you could understand that the unit is getting stronger a lot.
6.Fly by camera in towns and zoom in combat were also some nice stuff along with many others.

- Negative

1. AI Turns. Seriously, only this is enough to quit the game. From the very first turn AI is taking too long. Even on some campaigns where the AI was not moving at all you just had to wait for 5seconds at least. It practically makes the game unplayable unless you have a lot of patience and time to spare.
2. Yes, the 3d design was quite beautiful but let's face it, it's annoying. You constantly have to rotate the camera to gather resources because the current view you have prevents you from clicking to them. But where I am really loosing my patience is with the Underground part. You literally have to rotate for every move you make.
3. When battling there's a major flaw for me. The creatures they all look tiny. The game doesn't really allow you to "enjoy" the units.
Take a look for example how all the units are perfectly clear in Heroes 3 in comparison with Heroes5

Heroes3

Heroes5

4. What did I say above? That upgrading units should require a proper amount of resources instead of being cheap for no reason. Well yes, but provided that the map offers you plenty resources to gather. Seriously I feel like Heroes 5 maps are empty. Every map has barely any free resources to pick up. You have to battle for each one of them and even in that case there are not that many. And that doesn't only apply to upgrades but even to for the main building. Structures in Heroes 5 are extremely expensive both in resources and gold. It's very difficult to advance in higher difficulties unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Unfortunately, usually negative stuff overshadows the positive and those things posted above literally ruined my gaming experience. Each time I try to play a custom game I just feel I can't enjoy it and end up quitting it.

Yeah, if you can make abstraction of how 3D creates readabilty problems, the lore, factions lineups and art direction going horny teenagers instead of true myth.

The thing is, when you can't have a clear overview of the map you can tell they messed up here.

Perks with prereqs was a really nice thing and deserved to be studied and expanded further.

Upgrading is upgrading, h5 certainly went further with abilities, and let's not forget alternative upgrades which, who cares if they were imba it was more content thus more variety, then only tune.

I am not a fan specifically of the town leveling in h5 for build order, many paths influenced by creeping skills is better than ways put on rails.

One of the strength of h5, nothing to do with gameplay but there you have it, immersion powa. Zoom in combat is not a thing that I think should be needed, please clear overview of battlefield and things can get going from there, having to zoom/rotate because you can't see is just terrible.

Yeah, AI turns in h5 are incredibly long, again thank you @Quantomas for significantly reducing the waiting time with your patch.

There you go.

For HoMM, 2D>3D, IMHO

To me is for other reasons, art direction/lore flavor coming out from visuals really repulse me, Xuxo's amazing texture work and good mapmakers help but yeah, NWC art has been put into the trashcan thanks to Ubi&co.

Hey Galaad,

Thank you for providing more info. Could you also please tell me your opinion about the fourth negative point I stated?

You don't need to rotate the camera if you change the camera mode the classic homm view

also point 4 has nothing to do with the game, it is the design of the mapmaker. In the RMG for example you can adjust the free stuff on the ground at any time.

Sometimes you do, but TBH the "classic homm view" in 3D doesn't look so classic.

Nor classy.

Seriously I love h5's gameplay but that's about it, the rest is a miss to me.

I liked campaign structure, was unique like pursuit, spying, race etc. I liked it. Second is skillwheel - that was awesome change instead heading into this trio: Wisdom, Earth Magic, Logistics. Much better combos to create awesome hero.

Campaign desing, but not lore. 2 ways to upgrade units, Memory Mentor, etc.

If H5 was done in 2d and round not initiative based combat system I would give this 11/10 but suffer with some problems like AI freezes, it got from me a strong 9/10.

A huge amount of stuff is actually based on the initiative system.
It is the one that gives so great depth to the game.
Without initiative how are you going to make Sorcery work ? or Leadership? or empathy? Destruction STUN and FREEZE perks would also go down the drain to some extent, Distract, Shatter ATB slowdowns.
How would you balance Nightmares and Blade Furies?

The old ways were too unreliable. The initiative system adds the flavour we needed.

I dont mind you liking the H3 system, just wanted to contemplate on the benefits that would not exist without the H5 one .

H5 initiative was fantastic. Not without its flaws but it was new and exciting with a lot of depth. I like exploring new gameplay dimensions.

I pretty much agree with you. Albeit I didn't see one of the major consequences of the praised 3D thingy: the (relatively small) size of the maps. Exploration in HOMMV is heavily obstructed by the bulky 3D setting... plus the ridiculously over-powered neutral creatures. Besides, the AI turns... oh man (yeah, even with Q. improvements), playing XXL maps turns out a pain in the ass. Not to mention the map editor, which's plainly metaphysical.

Anyway, we can't deny it: it's a good successor.

Sorcery would be broken if H5 battle system was not present, but maybe Sorcery give chances to cast 2nd spell in same turn? for Leadership I would recommend H6 morale system.

It's quite a shame since I feel like I have the mood to play plenty custom maps and explore all of the game's features.

I am currently playing H6. Let's see how this will be.

I'm fan of HoMM series since i was a kid. I've got to say that 5 is the part that i enjoy the most. I love just about anything in this game - alternative upgrades, hero's skills system, schools of magic etc. If i'm playing HoMM with friends, the only part we play is 5.

I basically couldn't play HoMM5 despite it being my favorite entry in the series until I downloaded Quantomas's AI. The AI-upgrade and turn speed improvement, along with being able to have 8 skills, have definitely rekindled my love for the game!

Same here and this suggested mod works only in single player game
