Void Terrain for Everyone! (tutorial for map editor w/pics)

Tired of the old HommIV terrains

Want something new after 15 years?

Think it is impossible?

Well think again!

This method works in normal H4 without any mods.
However, my mod comes with things to make it easier,
such as the "void map" (XL, full subterranean)
and a future campaign based on them.

Anyways, let's get it on.

These are the kinds of result we expect:
share image

subefotos

You can make any kind of ambient in Void Terrain, just as normally.

So, let's see our example...
subir imagenes
Quite nice, eh?
This will be the one we are making...

So, lets start buy the beggining.

Choose the rock terrain tool and make wither a cave or a stone "blackness".
It doesn't really matter which one, the difference is only graphical at the borders.
I have an "Omnidungeon" map, which comes with Nimostar's Greatest Mod, which is completely blackened for this purpose.

In a void overlay map, you cannot see ANYTHING on the minimap.

But if you do it on one of your maps it is simply this...

hosting imagenes
imagenes gratis

Quite easy, eh?
Until now, everything normal.

But with a normal map editor, YOU CAN'T PLACE OBJECTS NORMALLY IN VOID
However, there are ways around this.
Brushes, for example, will place objects anywhere!

I used the brushes "Necromancer's Backyard", and "Portion of Sea", for example (they are included in Greatest Mod)

Now after few touch-ups...

But wait! How to do the touch-ups

This is quite particular.
With the mouse tool, you can paste objects into the void. Any kind of objects!

First find where you want to put it

Then, mouse tool

Click what you want to place. I chose rocks.

Now, copy with keyboard. Ctrl+C
Clik on the map editing area. This is very important, otherwise you will paste on the object toolbar!

Then, and only AFTER clicking, Ctrl+V to paste.
The rock (or any object) will be pasted directly under your pointer.

You can copy, cut and paste objects from other maps, other parts of the map, or other part of the vopid, on the same way.
But you cannot just "move" objects. You must cut and paste (the result is the same, only a little slower).

You can edit every object as normal.
It seems done, right?

But wait!
We are not finished yet.

Below the blackness, there is terrain.
The terrain vbelow influences the "native terrain bonuses",
And also the battle backgrounds, adventure map movement, and so on.
Remember, the terrain below doesn't cease to exist just because you don't see it!

So, I will use grass-lush and water-shallow to classify the terrain for the map.

As for the results on passability...

You may see that passability works as normal.
You can navigate and board or unboard ships on void overlays too.
I have tested these kinds of map and are fully playable.
It is reccomended that you cordon off used from unused areas with rocks, mountains or anything unpassable.

So, what do you think?

And, will you make use of the effect?

Post any map that you make with it!
Or any screenshot of your creations. Share it here.

I am sure the graphical possibilities are endless, I have barely explored it myself...

Spooky

Definitely a good tutorial on how to place objects on void terrain!

In one of my later maps in The Reckoning campaign that I'm working on, I definitely plan to use some void terrain. The H4MG can paint void terrain like you do with regular terrain in the H4 editor (without the cave / stone wall surrounding it), but it's also helpful to have an understanding of how you can actually place objects and how terrain still affects your units.

I plan to place all my objects and terrain first, and then to use the H4MG to paint void terrain where I need it

Where do you get H4 MG? Or do you mean RMG?

It is this one?

If so, I can't see how to paint void tiles

You help me now...

Hi Nimostar. I mean H4MG (Heroes 4 Map Generator), which is an advanced options map editor for Heroes 4. Karmakeld gave you a link in the other thread, but I'll add it here as well.

The CH thread for the H4MG is here.

The download and instructions page for the H4MG is here.

The version of the H4MG in the link above is the latest release, but what I currently have is a lot further along

If you give it a try, let me know if you have any issues. You have to download and install Java on your system first, then you just double click the Heroes 4 Map Generator icon and it should just work.

Yes, unfortunately I just saw Karmakeld post later, so my request was obsolete : P

The first link has a bad redirect, it leads nowhere...
with a recursive installation/installation/installation/installation/... path.

Thank you for your input anyways, I am downloading the Java right now to be able to use your program later.
For what I understand, though, it is still restricted in a lot of things compared with the original Map Editor (conditionals, objects, etc. and you still can't place objects directly into the void, but placing void into the objects is an advancement as well as larger paint brushes) - but the copy scripting and events features look quite neat (scripting each map was often a pain in the ass, to put it lightly!)
, and no-transition terrains may even be useful someday.

Hmm, where is that happening? From my post above yours? I opened both of the links and they took me to the correct place.. CH seems to be updating right now (or something) so maybe that is causing issues.

If you would like, I can give you a link to the latest version that I have.

Yeah, I've mostly been trying to work on the things you can't do with the editor, and will eventually come back and get the rest implemented

Placing objects is one of the things I'll get to eventually, and it won't matter if you're placing into void terrain or regular terrain

That's why that was first on my list Being able to copy and paste events / scripting between maps and other events is so useful and saves so much time.

You can also save groups of events to file, which get loaded by the program when you start it, and you can use to copy to maps.

As far as terrain transitions, I have an idea of how to do them, I just haven't gone back to it yet, but I do want to include the option to use no transitions so players could create something like a chess board if they so desired
