For me, I'd say the Academy and the Preserve.
Academy has versatile magic (especially with their illusion spells and mind control), powerful upper level creatures (especially genies and titans), and some of the best special buildings (say hello to treasury and university). Lords with their nobility and estates enhance your economy allowing you to build earlier and faster.
Preserve has its strong summoning skill and creature portal where you can churn out such powerhouses like Water Elementals, Mantises and Wawspworts, plus archers are up there with barbarians as the best starting heroes, while powerhouse upper level units combine to make one killer army. Nature magic is not useful, but it does have some important stuff like Wasp Swarm and Anti-Magic. Expensive, though.
Unfavourite Alignments? Necropolis is my most unfavourite alignment followed by Asylum.

Necropolis with their Undead hve all bonuses on their side! Exept that Holy Stuff...
