The Mafia Saga

I wanted to stand back from posting this, but I have a feeling I played mafia before... Well, at least I know I play the new one (Mafia III) now.
So, what is your guy's impression on this ?

[I copy-pasted my post from the other thread]

I've sank a few hours into Mafia III and so far I find the game really enjoyable. At this point I'm surprised with the harsh reception it got with all those comparison movies etc. Sure there are some glitches here and there by I didn't encounter anything gamebreaking: no crashes and Superman jumps for me at this point. There are things that previous entries did better, but I don't know if those are things of so much importance to your avarage gamer (who needs to tank their car in a open world game?). That said, game has great atmosphere and music. And the Bayou at night is simply gorgeous (not to mention other climatic locales like French Ward, cemetries or an abandoned sunken Lunapark).

Gameplay wise it's nothing groundbreaking, simple driving and shooting around, though the game has some cool ideas (for instance how you 'uncover' the map with junction boxes). It doesn't have the GTA's level of activities to do outside the Story, but I find the Story itself really engaging so I'm good (plus nowadays I don't have that much time to 'goof around' in games). I've heard some bad things from people about driving cars in this game, about how it doesn't feel right, but maybe they simply forgot to turn the 'Simulation' mode from the Options menu?

To put it simply I think the problem with the bad reception lies in the fact that devs generated too much hype with this game (and that it's predecessors were such good games)... I still must play this game a lot more to get the full picture, but so far I'm very positive about it.

What I'll add is that when we're talking about the whole saga I'm hoping for a 'moment' in Mafia III, like in the previous entries. One that will leave me with my jaw open (like the remearkable 'Cleavers' scene from Mafia II for instance).

The second Mafia also got harsh reviews.

And I bet the third game is another of those instances where the critics are dead wrong, since Mafia being a GTA clone, they all expect a full on FUBAR GTA expirience.

I think Mafia games should be treated as it's own thing, even tho it's a GTA clone.

Mafia games offer a serious crime drama for a plot.
GTA is mainly a hardcore parody of real life and a homage to those fubar action movies (GTA: San Andreas is esspecially guilty of this with the later missions in the game)

Yeah, it does suck. But, after all, it at least happens in the 60s I think and it's 3D. I remember that GTA III was released like in 1990 I think, and well it was pretty much of a hardcore parody. But the Mafia III at least happened a long time ago.

Actually, the first GTA came out in 1997. GTA III was released four years later. Unless you are referring to the period the game is set in, which I don't think was ever actually specified[/nitpick]

Yeah, open world in Mafia games was just a setting, a scenography for the story. Outside of story other activities were few. Heck, Mafia I only had this post game gimmicky missions in which you unlocked special cars.

Nowadays everyone measures an open world car driving game through GTA-lens. Everyone screams like "there are no bullet shells on the ground' and other bull. I don't give a s*it as long as the game is fun. Plus the game still has a few of those 'little things' like car dashboard lights turning off when you exit a car or car wipers running when it's raining. They probably just didn't have time for other things. There's one thing that bothers me actually: there are no trams, although there are rails. Well, the Green Streetcar is one of New Orleans symbols (and New Bordeaux is based on it), so it's a bit dissapointing...

My only concern gameplay-wise as of now is the Racket system works: you basically destroy a place to 'flush out' a Racket boss, only to go through the same place again doing exactly the same, because this time the the boss is at its end. This might get a bit repetetive after some time and it shows a bit of lazy design...

PS: I have a hunch those DLC mission/content packs will be really good.
