It might not have been that terrible, if they voted on singular units, instead of groups of units at once. Maybe? Probably people hoped the new units would be interesting and, of course, voting on the same old ones would make it a tad repetitive. It all comes to the fact that the new units sucked snow to the bones, or weren't good enough to avoid considering copying and pasting everything from the older games. So even voting on single units might have brought some creepy results.

My thoughts exactly. As a developer, Limbic had their work cut out for them. They were unprepared to handle the magnitude of a Heroes game. Same for those outsourced Chinese people they've been hiring since Heroes 6, more disappointing by the year. The open dev only made things worse for an already mishandled production. Seriously, they had to wait for people to vote faction in and then make them in mere months. They were't even in time for the Beta.

At least it could raise the red flags, the skill system article had an awful reception, as well as pretty much every skill and spell article.
They persisted and signed with a 'we know better what's fun for you' attitude, despite them showing very poor playing of the series on twitch. I am pretty sure that, had they listened to the constructive and popular suggestions a lot could have been salvaged.

Pre-alpha more like. The other issue.

It was telling, from the very beginning, that mechanics would be ... surprising, the way they were throwing artwork after artwork for people to feed of. Alas, too late now. Maybe when the Sun starts collapsing, those people will learn better. It might take a while though.

It just occurred to me, why does Ubisoft pawn it off to one dev after another (ruining them in the process)? All successful continuing franchises are made in house (or mainly in house), like Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed, all of Firaxis' and Paradox's games, etc. The same people working on the same game would get better and develop deeper understanding of it over time. It's amazing Heroes lasted this long at all. I mean, what studio would be willing to take on such project when they see their predecessors are in financial ruins? Not to mention there aren't that many studios familiar with the genre let alone the franchise to begin with. Ubisoft bought it a long time ago and had they put together a full in-house team back then it would've been fine. Now it's like every new dev would have to start from scratch and deviate further from the fans' nostalgia. - That isn't necessarily a bad thing if they can find competent people to breathe some new life into the franchise. But you know... here's to hoping.

Does it really matter if it's an in-house dev or not? As far as I can tell, not nearly as much as having the necessary experience and commitment to deliver a good product. Limbic had none of that. Heroes 7 was not only their first TBS entry, it was also their first AAA title and the first major PC game outside their mobile turf. Their credentials were shoddy on paper and responsible for commissioning such a team despite that is none other than Ubisoft. Since you mentioned Paradox, they recently acquired Triumph Studios to work on their grand strategy titles, a team who's proven themselves more than enough with Age of Wonders 3. Good publishers hire quality teams for their games, meanwhile Ubisoft still relies on Chinese sweatshops and inexperienced rookie students to get the job done.

That just confirms what I'm saying! I noticed that about Limbic too and even pointed it out at the time. That's what you get if you keep switching partners. Ubisoft is not only a publisher but they have dev studios as well. If they had put together an in house team when they acquired the franchise, that team would have tons of experience by now. Handing the work out to the lowest bidders is what did them in.

Right after they bought the franchise. They tried buying NWC away from 3DO as well and make them subsidiary, but they got refused at every corner. Probably the main reason why they had to scrap the Heroes 5 assets made by that point and start over with Nival. And I am glad all of that happened, because to me Ubisoft's Heroes 5 ended up being the best game in the series.

TBH, I understand anyone who does not want to have anything wth Ubisoft. They've shown their true colours a long time ago. As for Heroes 5, I don't think it is objectively the best Heroes game in the series, although I like that game a lot. Unfortunately, it had some critical issues that ruined it for me (and I guess not only me): stupid and slow AI and clunky implementation of 3D.

After the 3DO experience JVC should have been MORE than happy to collaborate with Ubisoft, from a corporate perspective. I'd suspect a couple more reasons here than "Ubisoft".

Personally, I'm okay with H5 Ashan. Now, that's probably because I grew up with it, and even so, I can still recognize NWC's universe is better. Of course, that's mostly subjective, but nobody can say Ashan is more original or better fleshed out that JVC's universe. That said, I don't think H5 Ashan was a bad universe. It got bad for me when suddenly there were spikes and spiders and neon colors everywhere and everything was overtly a cult. In H5, the universe was young enough that it could have gone in a direction that was good. I digress. The point I was planning to make is that IMO Heroes 5 would be the best in the series if not for the slow AI, and had Ubisoft continued in that direction it could have been great.

What do you guys think, do you like the ability icons that creatures has, or should the ability primary in the text?

Heroes 2-3 had hidden ability where you read the docs
Heroes 4 had icons
Don't remember what Heroes 5+ had

I like the things like Troglodytes are blind so "visual spells" or medusa's stone gaze doesn't work

There really isn't hope for the franchise Take a look, if you play any Ubisoft games.

The future of HOMM games is indeed in already existing mods for HOMM3-HOMM5. How could they ever tackle the sheer amount of content in Homm3 for example? The game would not need to be better, or even equal, but rather relevant enough, which I'm not seeing after the releases of Homm6-7.

Now, when we add this new business model to the poor sales of Homm7, it's likely that Homm8 will never come or if that would happen, there would be horrible amount of DLC, something like the base version comes with 4 towns, but you can download two more since day one.

Not sure that would pass in a game like homm. Not nearly enough  casual players as they've driven most away. Plus they'd need an act of good will to ease the strained relationships before going for another decision that pisses people off.

At this point I wonder if we wouldn't be better off if H6 had gone for a permanently online drm. Perhaps that would have driven people away before they even made h7. The only language uni understands is profit loss. Not reasonable feedback nor fanrage. Just people not buying.

Heroes franchise should be discontinued as long as it is in the hands of Ubisoft. They simply don't do any research as why are H3 and H5 so popular, don't pay their devs enough, don't invest enough, "don't have high budget" and whatever not. And even worse, they proved that they are competent at one thing, and that is ****ing up the game every single time. I don't even know how many games from them have died because of their horrible decisions, they are just clueless.

In the meantime, Triumph Studios(Age of Wonders 1/2/3 creators) are about to announce their new TBS game that will appeal to the Age of Wonders fans, and they crushed with every Age of Wonders game so I can't wait to see what they have in mind. They also were acquired by Paradox Interactive so they will have a quite big company to support them. Thank god that they are not clueless at least and so far haven't disappointed.
