My country's people are so greedy

People from my country are so greedy that they charge extra fee for cutting pizza. Also, they charge more if your car is parked on a spot to a shadow under a tree etc. And all of that is basically legal.

I find both actions to be perfectly legal, cutting pizzas is some serious work when you sell several thousands a day, then having a fresh car when finishing work and there were 32° all the afternoon is something tons of people would kill for. And after all, is up to you to accept or no, is not like the pizza HAS to be cut, no?

True, it is up to the person to decide whether they will or not use a service, and that's okay. It still is something that should never be encouraged.

But really, is that something you support? Because food out here is not top quality, and you still have a car that is hellishly hot inside. Being said, this sort of behavior would encourage others to increase their prices for things that aren't even good.

But let's take something more important, water. If you don't have a bottle of water, prepare to spend about 3€ for a litre.

What I support is people being payed for services YOU ask. For example, if I go buy a pizza then the guy tells me I have to pay a supplement for cutting it, I say "don't do it, I will" and pay standard price. That's as simple as that.

Here the liter of fresh water on sunny days is 5 euros in touristic areas. So whats the problem? I know it, so I buy water at supermarket, 2 euros/10 liters then I bring a bottle with me.

That's the thing. There is no mention for that extra fee for cutting the pizza, until you get the bill.

Hmm, that may be illegal unless there is specified in the menu. But I'm no expert.

In the 80's, we had a play called The Heroic Grocery Store versus the Super Market (in Turkish, a super market literally meant a mall those days, now shortened to market only, fittingly, the word meaning "market" as in trading zone is pazar from bazaar, anyway), it was a time when malls were just starting to replace local stores and the play had a line like this:
- People wont stop buying from my store, you guys even charge for grocery bags, what a shame!
- Why should't I? It's a guaranteed sell. Anybody who buys enough things from the store will need them. Besides, when he buys enough to need grocery bags, the price of the bag will seem like a drop in the bucket to the customer, nobody will seriously complain for paying a few extra nickels while spending hundreds. You have no strategy, poor ol' grocer.

It's the same logic, someone who already bought a pizza for 15 bucks, won't mind the 0.5 cutting fee and will go "cutting fee? really... well, whatever, it's just a nickle anyway..."

When you have more customers, when you are a chainstore or a mall, those nickles accumulate, so it's more pragmatic to charge. A small, local store on the other hand, wont earn much from that and it's wiser to not take money from such things as a humane gesture. This way, you have regular customers who pick you for the special treatment.

You should be happy, this is a sign that your country has ultimately turned the back to the communist system.

Welcome to capitalism, this is what east Europe has always wanted, so you get the good sides, but you get the bad sides as well.

Nothing is perfect.

I dont think it has anything to do with communism, it's rather how capitalism evolves within itself, from traditional local shops to big chain stores and to corporatism.

Fair enough. As a point of comparison my own country, besides being an Arab, African or Muslim country, is before all a popular democracy so I get what he talks about. Sometimes, you will find, if you do an analysis that it is pretty much the same process it has known than the one of eastern Europe, would replace the religion with Christianism, you would get a standard east block republic.

You had malls in the 80s, we had them about 7 years ago, and they are all property of the state. So the difference with his country is that for example, we don't fee for extra services, like cutting pizzas, plastic bags, or parking places. So that capitalism evolution you talk about really depends, as we never turned all the back to  the east block, we are still a socialist one. Countries like Croatia or Slovenia have a different ideology, a very anti-left one generally.

Which might be considered a nonsense (talking about services), as a better service should be paid better I guess. We have a hotel called Al Aurassi, has too facades, one opens to a big panorama to the sea, the other one you see trees and buildings. The prices of the rooms of both facades is the same hahaha.

Are they the same because there is a state policy of fixed prices for the rooms?

Because it is the property of the state, yes. It's a public chic hotel, so the prices are expensive, but only vary depending on other factors such as surface, type of the rooms... etc. But not the view.

Of course, if it was the property of a particular, he would make people pay for the view as well, not by reducing the price of the bad facade, but by increasing the one of the other's. And that would be capitalism.

Just to be clear, the price of the pizza around here is about 50 kn, which is the equivalent of about 6.5 €. However, they charge for each slice cut about 0.3 €. 8 slices equals 2.4 €, summing it up to 8.9 €. And that doesn't even include the drinks.

I must say having a price tag on each slice is a new level of... entrepreneurism! I guess, the next thing would be to measure the cuts and price it accordingly: This cut is 19.67 cm long which would make your bill 28.987654 bucks in total sir, come again and have a lovely evening.

On the other hand, Sal can learn from this business model and charge extra for each key he presses while giving piano lessons, additional charges would include an hourly rent for the chair the student sits on and extra charges for turning each page of the song book. You can even lure them in by giving a discount on the black keys, Sal.

uh, piano lessons are very cheap, is not like knowing to uncork a pipe, this is the future. Actually I am struggling to find some private lessons because life costs jumped, looks like people are no longer interested in. So I am nowhere near to create a custom business.
