It is racism as you focus on attributes of the species. In this case, skinn color.

in vanilla - i went Bron (7 lizards!!!) and hoped for Tazar to pop-up or picked someone else from the top tier of heroes
in WT/TE - weeeell, Taz was too good (:

There is Tazar, then all the rest. He is so superior to the rest of them, you cannot even compare them. Tazar's sole disadvantage is his coming with Advanced Armorer, and so with increased risk of a useless second skill. A scout finding a valuable skill in a nearby Witch Hut ASAP is indeed valuable.
My second is Alkin, indeed I usually play Fortress with him because Tazar is so over-powered. Offense, Armorer and a Mighty Gorgon specialty are hard to argue against.
Third is either Bron for the headstart of up to 7 Basilisks with an additional 4 in first week - or Drakon with his Gnolls specialty. Bron is more useful in the long run, as you'd never keep Gnolls on a main hero. Both come with a less than ideal secondary skill, Drakon with Leadership and Bron with Resistance. I'd go with Bron if I were to choose between the two.
Wystan often surprised me, though. Armorer, Archery and Lizardmen specialty sometimes made him a better secondary than one would expect.

I firmly stand by Tazar, myself. This hero made me love Fortress in the first place. Without Tazar as my main, I feel crippled by Fortress. Tazar is what enables me to survive 1st strike and reposition the key hydra/moo units. If I recover by then, stopping Tazar is very difficult.
I know many TOH players say Crag Hack is better, but my experiences, both competitive and casual, state otherwise. A well played Fortress led by Tazar usually ends up on top of the enemy, unless we're talking about gamebreakers, such as small map Conflux (or heck, any conflux at all), diplomacy Haven or Necro on XL map with lots of neutrals. I did pull some miracle wins against those at times, but it did depend on external factors, I have to admit.
I mostly play XL, and I guess competitive scene moved far away from those in the later years.

I've always found myself choosing Bron when it comes to starting new scenarios, if only by virtue of his ability to start with up to 7 basilisks (allowing for a rapid clearing of creature stacks).

My strategy! 
I know Tazar.. I wait him.. 
In Heroes 4, you take Tactics class, ok Barbarian Tazar.. I take artifacts, Because Gorgons can be in Asylum (Dungeon)..
But we don't meet Gorgons again, also true Dragon killer can't be in Remote Mountain II..
Thanks for idea, I do !!HE#X Gorgon scripts.. Those creatures get a new bonus

I fail to see the point in picking Drakon for this reason. If you are looking for a good starting hero, Bron will be a better choice.

Would you guys like to see some of my "best X hero" polls redone? Maybe with better poll options and a more current SoD or HotA meta? Or shall we stick to the old polls? 
I guess we could also split the might and magic heroes, so we have all heroes in the polls, that would give twice as many polls though...
