Cahl and Ignatius are good starting heroes for their army but I think Cahl is probably the worst long term because his starting skills are pretty bad.

Cahl for true PRO player.. Ignatius? Isn't zounds of Familiars are dangerous? One map showed thousands of Imps.. Funny! Player doesn't join Imps, but used for skeleton farming, and goes to against enemy, player hasn't Cure nor Dispel, because banned from the map.. So enemy AI dressed Armor of the Damned.. And then AI casts Blind, Blind, Blind.. Yeah Ignatius' speciality as a Skeleton.. But mapmaker is or was an advanced player, maybe mapmaker realized now, if played in MP.. So PRO then.. I forget one matter.. Zounds of Pikemen never seen?! And has no speciality.. I hope its good fact..

Ignatius is good for starting army because 150+ familiars is strong on day one. Long term I say he's better than Cahl (unless it's a one hero format) because neither of their specialities are very good but Ignatius has better secondary skills. I would much rather use any of the other Demoniacs over either of them long term. Except maybe Rashka. His specialty is pretty good but not good enough to overlook the fact that he starts with Scholar.

Rashka is a bit weird: starting with Scolar but without a spell book (the same is true for Synca). Add to this the fact, that many Heretics can't cast their starting spells due to their little Knowledge: Inferno Magicians are not designed very well. Also the starting spells itself are not very useful beside Calids Haste and Zydars Stone Skin (no one starts with Slow or Magic Arrow). Olemas Weakness fits only because it is a kind of evil spell. No one pics Water Magic for Inferno.

If all heroes started in level 2, Heretics could get +1 Knowledge, so they can actually cast their spells. Spell specialists could also start with their relevant magic school, Torosar with Artillery, Scholar and Eagle Eye heroes with Wisdom etc...

Top of the foodchain:

Calid - overall strongest, Learning is super powerful, making Calid very viable for every other town as well. Specialty isn't bad even for main hero, as many heroes will likely not benefit from their specialty far less.

Calh - Numerous early Gog stack gives a very powerful start, early Archery skill makes scaling even easier.

Ignatius - Familiars can accomplish a lot in the early game, Tactics makes clearing early shooters with minimal loses possible. Very underestimated hero.

Secondary heroes:

Fiona - Give her 1000 exp and Expert scouting is all yours to enjoy. Dog specialty means slightly more movement each day.

Xyron - Scholar is a great skill for any hero roster, you can usually find most of the relevant tier 1 spells even from your starting zone, and thus teach every one of them to your main hero. Also makes early magic heroes more ready for combat.

Pyre - Can play a role as a main hero, but usually is better a secondary. Gives you access to ballista, and Logistics is always a welcome skill for any hero role.

Octavia - Gold heroes are always somewhat good, and Octavia also has Scholar, +500 gold to be able to do what Xyron can is a small prize to pay in my opinion.

Possible, although bit weaker main heroes:

Nymus & Marius - starting with either Advanced Offence or Armorer is a  great asset, for any town. Trustworthy heroes for any town/player that didn't roll a S-tier hero.

Zydar: Sorcery is finally there where it should have been for 20 years. Can be very powerful in the end, the problem is the early game, as there's basically no advantage there.

Ayden - Intelligence and it's specialty still make a good hero even after the heavy nerf they received some years ago.

Forget:

Rashka - Scholar in it's weakest form. Efreet are strong units, but why do the hassle with Rashka, there simply ain't any help coming from secondary skills. Nymus and Marius will likely take better care from the Efreet than Rashka can overall do.

Olema - Yay, more powerful Weakness. Anyway, next hero:

Xarfax - No mana to cast early Fireball, and what would casting it really accomplish anyway? Leadership is a semi-good skill for secondary heroes, but that's not much to be honest.

Ash - I mean, yes, the EE has been buffed. However given how it works, there isn't really a good reason why the hero should really start with it.

Axsis - Due how the game is played, Mysticism isn't something you should put your money on. It can make a form of an advantage, but other main heroes simply have more to show.
