HoMM4 cropped screen
OK guys... installed GoG's HoMM4 complete and it's a mess whenever paired with Equilibris.
Basically it looks like that:
in windowed mode or fullscreen (doesnt matter).
The game looks fine (non-cropped) in windowed mode 1024x768, but runs with like 5 fps at best.
Fullscreen 1024x768 also causes some screen issues (stupid bar on top, parts of battle screen cropped). Sometimes I can get it to work by alt-tabbing in and out, but most of the time it's just a mess.
Works fine without Equilibris on GoG's version.
Ideas how to fix it? I kinda like to be able to use Nagas and Ogre Mages, lol. So I'd rather want Equilibris to work.

I think installing Heroes4 wrapper should help.

Or maybe not I'm getting random crashes using the wrapper. Sigh.

don't know what equilibris is and if/what they did to nagas, but even in normal game nagas are bada55. Don't know why people don't pick them and prefer the lame a55 genies who win the game alone. If playing genies is skill...
As for ogres, I'd stay away from them. By the time you manage to get them and the behemoths to the enemy they are halved. You know how Stronghold is the slowest faction in H4? Ogres are even slower than that, so if you're going to pick ogres... sleep well

Nagas got triple attack in Equilibris. Like Cerberi.
Ogres got a solid buff to spellcasting abilities and A/D.
I see a lot of people have a problem with HoMM4 crashing during battles (on enemy moves).
I tried reducing the game to single core, which did help a bit, but not entirely.
Perhaps the only way is to make a virtual machine with Win XP (32bit)...

they really didn't need any buff though. The Nagas, I mean. The ogres did
I could usually play GoG's H4 on Windows 7 x64 if my memory serves me well. I don't remember any crashes, so it might be your computer. But it's also true that I never played Equilibris (whatever that thing is...)

Looks like I solved the problem.
You have to install the wrapper and set affinity of the process homm4.exe to single core.
Many people on GoG were stating the wrapper is sufficient - it isn't, at least not for me.

Yep, it is. I don't know this game that well, so that may... take a while. Unless I'll just do campaigns on average difficulty and call it a day. I'll still make a thread tho

I don't recall the specifics for any of the campaigns, but it is my impression that the gamy may get easier at higher difficulty settings, because it limits the enemy even more than it limits you.
So my suggestion is that if you find a setting you find is best for your objective, go ahead and use it, otherwise I guess using what the mapmakers wanted is the way to go?
Btw. I assume there is a suggested difficulty setting like in HoMM 3, but I don't really remember if there is.
Have fun and congrats on solving the problem!

This game has so much wasted potential, honestly.
The towns feel and play differently unlike HoMM3 ones which are mostly carbon copies with same spells and same hero builds.
But the game lacks so much depth... It could use a tier or two of units more (the gaps between current tiers are too big), upgrades, more might skills, better scaling of abilities (equilibris tries to fix that), better animations (they were awful back then and they are awful now), less sucky town screens... sigh.
Feels like they polished some things (music, spell section) but rushed the others.

Doom, H4 development was rushed like no tomorrow. Very few people working on it, very few budget. 3DO went bankrupt shortly after its release, was already in awful state before that. Actually crazy what NWC managed to pull off considering the situation. At least the campaigns are great.

It's true, and sad. This game the right ideas behind (some controversial, but I think most worked). Wonder what could've come out if 3DO didn't bankrupt.

The campaigns are in fact very easy once you get a few tricks up your sleeve. Immortality potion...
I remember the castle one being awfully dull and the nature one being the most enjoyable. The chaos pirate one is not a bad idea but in general I felt most of them were weak, always the same. In the first map you develop your hero with the castle you are given and in the next map you rush with the hero to gain max level so the rest of the campaign you end in a couple of weeks with just your hero running around.
As to 3DO going banckrupt and that affecting the development, let's not forget, most games of the time were made with laughably small crew and basically no budget untill that point. H4 wasn't anything special.
As to polished spells section, it's filled with copies of each other. Not exactly what I'd value highly or I'd call polished.
Besides, it's still always might/tactics/scouting + a magic skill that's the best combo for a solo hero. If you get two heroes then you can mix more but it's still combat+magic and tactics for one and scouting for the other. Nobility is never worth it because heroes beat anything aside from the odd pack of black dragons.

Well, with the heroes carrying over with personal fighting skills this couldn't have ended any differently. If your hero is strong, he'll just rek the neutrals and the map. If they however accounted for that upping the numbers, a non-combat hero would be kinda useless - he'd sit in his castle for months trying to rise an army to break through.
Hell, even in HoMM3, some things shouldn't carry over because it ruins the campaign entirely. Here it's just worse.
So far I'm just playing random maps and having fun. is it just me or is Might kinda blargh? Their T4 units are amazing (their population is like 50% more damaging than the opposition's, though I have no idea what behemoth's "might" does as there is no desc...) but the lack of magic is such a pain. And, on regular maps, a combat focused hero is garbage.'
JoonasTo said: Nobility is never worth it because heroes beat anything aside from the odd pack of black dragons.
it's useful in maps (not campaigns, I guess) - just one levelup (which usually comes free anyway) gives you +20% pop in your town, which is mighty useful. If you bother to get this guy more free levelups you can develop him a bit to give +30% pop and some gold through estates (which pays for the chests you had to take to level him up), then hide him in sanctuary and forget about him. +30% pop is damn nice since it comes with so little hassle, priviledging towns that can recruit a Lord straight away.

Yeah I was mostly focusing on campaigns there. A secondary lord can be worth it. For the main it's not worth it since you start with a high level hero, you don't start with a developed town to hire army from.
All the towns are kinda blargh to be honest. If you're playing equilibrium death has been nerfed too so vampires aren't the superpower they were. More often that not you don't make choices on what is good, but rather on what you have money for since the end result is more levels for heroes and more army gets more XP faster.
If the map is good for it, try playing a thief, sneaking around is great
