Are there Exceptions to Scoring Criteria in HoMM3?
So, I have read a number of threads here, and around the web, stating the following is how the game totals your score at the end of a scenario:
-- Number of days/turns it took you to win
-- How many cities/towns you had at the end
-- Were all enemies defeated?
-- Was the grail found?
-- Level of difficulty
From what I understand, the score we start with is 200, we get 25 points if all enemies are defeated, we get another 25 points if we found the grail. So, this gives us 250 points in total, which is then multiplied by the difficulty (easy:0.8/normal:1/hard:1.3/expert:1.6/impossible:2)... But then we subtract the number of days/turns to complete, minus 10, which is then divided by the number of towns on the map plus 5.
So, in theory, finishing an impossible map while finding the grail, defeating all enemies and capturing all towns/cities, in 10 days, SHOULD yield a perfect score of 500...
However, I recently finished "Dead and Buried" (HoMM3 demo map) while fulfilling the above criteria; all towns captured and all heroes defeated, grail found and built, played on impossible, completed EXACTLY on day 10-- But in the end, I only received a score of 496.
So, the only thing I can conclude is that there must be something I am not understanding... Does a perfect 500 require all neutral armies to be defeated as well? Do I need to own every dwelling/mine on the map? Not sure if it makes a difference, but I was playing Shadow of Death (with the HD mod ofc).

Did some testing and was a bit confused why I couldn't reach the best score as well. It seems that simple using of google could have saved some time, there seems to be a calculator for that purpose.
According to the calculator, the map needs to have at least 8 towns captured, and you would need to finish the map during day 2(!) in order to get the best score. It's possible to get the best score after the second day as well, but then you would simply need more towns.
I edited the map you played so I could get grail and kill all enemies during day 2, and the score was 498, just like the calculator would indicate.

It is plus 10, so according to the formula
(200 - ⌊(days + 10) / (towns + 5)⌋ + all_enemies_defeated(25) + grail(25)) * difficulty
you should score exactly 496 points in your case.

Good find!

Ah! I see... That plus vs minus makes a big difference. Thanks for pointing that out.

It works only for H3 SOD/Complete. Hota Team changed this formula and new calculation is unknown.
