Rescuing a lost map from a saved game

Hi - tricky question for you pro types.

I made a map that me and my son really like to play, but it was somehow deleted (during a GoG sync I suspect?).  However I still have some save games where we are playing that map, so clearly the map still exists within the savegame data.  I can restart scenario for example and we begin the map anew, albeit all the explored area remain explored rather than shrouded in darkness.
Is there some way to rescue the map itself from the savegame?  Such that I could load it in map editor and make changes to it, and also that we could play it properly without the whole map being pre-explored?

Just hiding the map should be no issue, there is a cheat code (nwcignoranceisbliss) for this.

However, I believe there are no random objects in the save. So if your map contained a random tier 4 artifact, and it rolled a tome of earth in your current save, it will always be tome of earth. You will also find the same monster groups every time and the grail will be in the same place. Mage guilds will always contain the same spells.

But if I could extract the map as a .h3m file I could then go and tweak it any way I liked, which I want to do anyway as it had a few mistakes in it.  Is that possible somehow?

I doubt it.

I'm afraid, you will have to recreate it from scratch. I know it is painful, this can not be done in a day or two. But you still have a save of the original, that can be used as a template. That's at least something. I was not so lucky, when I once lost my favorite map.

Yeah what kongsuni said is right, I hope he can restore it. There's been a lot of awesome work with the map/save formats in the last few years by some great community members and it should be quite possible to restore the map file.

But I can't attach files to any messages or even the emails.  Is that because I'm a new member? Or is there an easy way around that...

Edit: Never mind, I found his email.  Sorry for being so noob

If not, you need to use an external website, such as https://filebin.net/, to upload the file.

When you have the file you should upload to maps4heroes so both:

- anyone can enjoy the map
- you have a backup
