You need earth magic as fast as possible in all versions of H3 because it allows casting the overpowered spells mass slow and town portal.

Yup, you always need "a Earth", best skill in the game and TP is honestly game breaking.

But seriously, as said, Earth would be worth it for the big power increase (choosing town and diminishing mana cost and movement cost) on the most powerful spell of all, Town Portal. Only if you will ever have one town is this of lesser importance.
But on top of that it is also Mass Slow, Resurrection, Raise Dead, Death Ripple, Meteor Shower and Implosion. Other skills have comparatively less varied utlity and less profit from upgrading them. Also, individually, Earth Elementals are the strongest and with most HP. Since summoning elementals is a key spell and you summon power*x for elemental number, summoning Earth elementals is the best choice.
For example, Water does not have any resurrect, good damage or adv. map mobility, fire doesn't have any mobility at all and bad resurrect, and air is the only one that can compete with mass haste that annulls mass slow, and dimension door and fly which can go toe to toe with town portal if enabled; also pretty good damage like chain lightning and lightning bolt (but no resurrects or all-army damage unlike earth; also the most fragile elemental).

What you can't play without SS? Do you have difficulty playing without Earth? Feel difficult? When first you don't need in RoE, second WoG/ERA where are immune monsters and random Mirror of the Home-Way may replace some of the following: Schools of War, what HotA can't realize.. But fanofheroes brought nice.. AIR! For me AIR is the best, if I don't get a AIR, good luck I know how to play Earth, Water and Fire.. Noobs! fanofheroes isn't a noob, she plays WoG/ERA!  But Salamandre doesn't say anything here

Because he doesn't have to state the obvious: first thing you see in Heroes 3 is "a earth". So yes, a earth is unavoidable.

Earth is a good opening/beginning game, but Air in endgame.. Thus WoG/ERA.. If monsters are normal, you shouldn't feel hard to play Tactics against neutral monsters.. Thus RoE.. We can't help your experience points, etc or realized some AB, SoD and HotA maps can play without Earth.. If you knew about it, you are awesome player..

Ok what does the TP benefit from? Allies and XL+U or bigger.. Remember TP trap, what I call a name, it means opponent wants you go to your home, and you can't back to moving, opponents are close to your town. Opponent's main hero is coming to your town with more experience and troops. But if allies and XL+U or bigger, you haven't distress. Believe me! I hate trapped and can't move from town.
EDIT
I wrote Realm of Chaos trap often..
Thus S between L map is powerless to AIR.. and Realm of Chaos is RoE! But if you want be TP to your home/town, plz!
I recommend you reject your home/town.. and to get your FLY/DD..

And WoG/ERA
is a very OP, for example.. But hero isn't ready to mighty king.. You can see WoG/ERA boots give an Earth skill to hero, but map is Battle of Glory_Team v1.21!
