Tocath says Orrin  But you can hire Lord Haart and Sylvia, if the map demanded you.. And then you can hire Edric and Sorsha also maybe Tyris, if you are using Diplomacy, etc their troops get +1 speed and 24lvl hero gets +4 att/def, what it gives more damage..
Where is Sir Mullich? When he belonged to extension heroes.. They are Gelu, Xeron, etc gang.. But Lord Haart should to remove from the game, and then JVC replaced Sir Mullich, I think so.. But handicapped Haart Lich in the HotA.. Ok is Sir Mullich OP? If you don't arrange your extension heroes poll.. I can do.. First SoD heroes, who is the best, and then he/she joins the HotA extension heroes club, second round we vote them.. I tried to explain.. Now I found extension word..  Ok I'm waiting for one month.. Thanks

I have no idea what you are talking about Ghost, but godspeed to you. 
Sir Mullich is not in the poll since he is OP, HotA Crew seems to share that view.

It's between Valeska and Orrin.
Valeska is the tempo queen, and sadly the only hero you really start with, Castle doesn't unfortunately bring anyone nearly as strong compared to Valeska, so in normal maps, Valeska is the go-to choice by default. Archery skill and Marksmen can easily carry you to mid-game
Orrin starts with the same secondary skills, but instead of having focus in the early game, Orrin pushes his game plan towards the late game. The problem I found with Orrin thou is that you don't really get a big shooter powerstacks, the Cyclops are pretty much the only ones you can imagine getting in large numbers fast.
If you don't count the two above, then the playing field gets more even:
Beatrice is pretty good as a main, it's sounds good on paper thinking her as secondary hero with massive potential, but the problem is that in normal circumstances you won't be able to build a high level Beatrice for scouting purposes only.
Lord Haart is one of the more buffed heroes in Hota, and due that is somewhat in similar spot as Beatrice, having a specialty for a skill you wouldn't normally want to see in your main.
Sylvia would obviously be good hero for any role in water maps, Sorsha I would appreciate due her Offence, and Tyris by her Tactics, which is surprisingly good skill for early Castle.
Edric and Christian draw the short sticks: You don't really want to see either one in tavern in Day 1, as they both add something else on the archer slot. Griffins are pretty average units anyway, and Christian I would even call the worst Ballista specialist.

All castle heroes are not a good choice for main, but Valeska gives you the best starting army. Ideally you want to start with her and then level up 2-3 barbarians/overlords/beastmasters to level 4. Then choose the one that learned earth magic for main hero.
If you are stuck with just knights then level them up and use whoever got earth magic as main.
