HotA edited hero portraits
I've looked in the HotA documentation, but I can't find any info about which hero portraits they have modified.
As far as I can see they have edited 24 portraits:
Valeska, Sir Mullich, Adelaide, Caitlin, Ajit, Gunnar, Alamar, Sephinroth, Merist, Tiva, Marius, Nymus, Olema, Galthran, Nimbus, Thorgrim, Coronius, Gem, Gretchin, Gurnisson, Tyraxor, Vey, Zubin and Iona.
Am I missing any portraits?
I actually mostly prefer the original portraits, with a few exceptions.

Ah okay, thanks.
Edit: After a closer look I gotta say HotA did a pretty good job with cleaning up the portraits. Most of the HotA portraits look better than they did originally, except the Stronghold heroes and maybe a few others.

HotA portraits are unnecesary with a few exceptions.
Female portraits seem airbrushes, heroines need not be models.
Why change Sorsha's hair?
Why would Adelaide glow be removed?
Aenain was necessary, as was Sir Mullich most obviously

I don't mind the females looking better.
That one curl Sorsha had down her forehead looked weird, she looks better in HotA.
Can you explain to me what that big orange "star" on Adelaides chest was supposed to be? I think I prefer the HotA version here as well.
HotA messed up the Stronghold heroes though.

If you try on a helmet over long hair, a single lock sticking out is much more likely than perfectly trimmed all along the length
As for Adelaide, I just assumed that to be priestly magic. Though I myself would have made it a cold spell, since she is adept at Frost Ring.
Imperfection is part of the human condition. If we remove imperfections we remove character, sort of like passing everyone through instagram filter.
Even demons in HotA go with teeth added so that they have "symmetrical grins" and "soft skin"... in real life, do humans or animals dont have crooked or missing teeth? In my opinion making everyone "perfect" is removing variety (see Nymus and Marius). This is supposed to be medieval style rough fantasy land, not America's Next Top Model. Merist the Gnoll Witch got a botched snout job. Even poor Zubin the GOBLIN BATTLE MAGE couldn't escape "beautifying" tooth surgery...

I get your point.
Actually I am not sure about Marius and Nymus. But Marius had some weird red spots on her forehead that did'nt look good.
With Nymus they "corrected" one of her eyes and changed her mouth.
What's with the yellow teeth of Inferno heroes btw?
Merist hmm I'm not sure.
Zubin definitely looked better before HotA.

Vey got a redesign but was looking exactly like Gretchin before.
I think Sephinroth, Jeddite and Fafner could still use a once-over.

They actually already did Sephinroth, but she still looks like a sour lemon.
What is wrong with Jeddite and Fafner?

Both look a bit too smooth/blurry to my eye. Not to forget Nimbus, he looks out of place more significantly. Like an oil painting or something.

They also did Nimbus, he used to have an even flatter face.
