While Necropolis is strong in the long run, they suffer from poor movement. With Gunnar, you could easily defend all these towns.
That being said, it is no problem to lose some towns. Just make sure to take them back on day 1, so you get to recruit the units.
Against the AI the key is to strengthen your main hero and never lose him. Everything else doesn't really matter.

Salamandre can you elaborate more why in this forum TP has been rated as the most awesome spell? on even large maps it’s functions can be covered by chaining and if needed to get your hero somewhere else have 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 hit a guard then rehire him at a town?
I mean it’s below. IMHO resurrection, Implosion, berserk , Dd Fly , Summon Eles. , Mass P. Perhaps on par with Chain L and clone and above meteor shower

Well you quoted my entire phrase and the answer is in. For a newbie who complains about having his towns taken by AI, TP will be the most awesome spell. Then when he learns to chain, TP will become less important. Now, there is a difference between singleplayer and multiplayer, in MP proper chain is necessary and a mark of mastery, in SP where you play to relax and not competitively, constant need of chaining may look repulsive.
Personally, if a custom map doesn't give me TP in the first 1-2 months while limiting the number of heroes I can get, thus constantly having to go forth and back, I stop playing. Some mapmakers think TP should come very late, so their map takes 77 months to complete so must be "a complex" map. Artificially retarding town portal is just bad idea, keeping the tempo is what matters.

Battle Mages have the same chance of learning all 4 magic schools, which sometimes makes it hard to get those you want.
Wisdom does'nt really help you in the early game either, Tactics will.
Dessa is also a great hero though.

As a ranger Kyrre can't learn Fire Magic, so also only 3 magic schools to worry about. Rangers likes to get Water Magic though and usually you would prefer Earth and Air instead, so could be a minor problem.
I am not really a fan of Archery for Rampart either, Grand Elves are great, but they are the only unit from Rampart that benefit from Archery. You could consider taking other ranged units along, instead of slow dendroids or dwarves though. (In HotA you can get cyclops from creature banks, if you are into that.)

Depending on your faction and your (un-)willingness to use DD/Fly, Water Magic may be better than Air. At least with Tower I will pick Kyrre over Gunnar.

Quite GM+ Bloodsucker!
Ex-GM Phoenix4ever went to an original expert level back.. Because Phoenix4ever can't do his map to finish in 2 months.. It would cause Phoenix4ever rejects his map, when vomiting and bored thing.. But not yet!  Ok think about hundreds wins then caused never learned new tricks due to his only map.. Thanks bigcitymama restored my memory.. His post: "i tried - Try to no rush - 1 month 3 weeks 6 days. dont think i ever finished a map in 20 days. if that was the point its ok!" Not only 2 months.. Phoenix4ever replied to thecastared due to willing to show his knowings aka an expert player.. Chance?

No need for your jaw to drop.. GM+ level players.. Many reasons what GM+ demanded.. Hard staircase! Noob/Newbie -》 Advanced -》 Expert -》 Expert+ -》 GM -》 GM+ -》 Elite -》 Elite+.. So Salamandre is an Elite player.. No wonder!
