Some questions regarding ERA and Empire of the World III
Hello all, I've been reading through the comment section of Empire of the World III, over at maps4heroes and I seen Valery's replies to some players who were experiencing problems.
https://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opinions.php?map_id=2112&game=3
He recommended playing his custom maps on a clean ERA 3.9.5 installation, specifically without the Launcher. This has blown my mind now because I thought the only way to get ERA was via the launcher, that's what's recommended and shown in all instruction videos on youtube, etc...
He went on to say that the Launcher DESTROYS the main wog scripts on installation which leaves me with so many questions, I don't know where to begin so I'll jut make a list:
1) Is it true?
2) If so, why? Is it to make wog compatible with gameplay mods like ACM or TUM?
3) Is anybody else playing ERA like this? What are the advantages and limitations?
4) Is it stable and is it possible to update?
5) Can I still access the mod manager?
6) Where can I get it aside from Valery's link found in those comments? Is it hosted anywhere else like on github?
Thanks.

IS not thé launcher the problem, but thé fact that thé launcher installs thé last era version.
Which IS no longer compatible with any mod using wog scripts prior to 2023

Are they ever gonna finish ERA or are we dealing with a case of endless growth? Makes me depressed, how's anybody supposed to create anything lasting for it...

They modified some WoG scripts which they considered cheating (too strong). But those were the fun scripts, for me which were using them a lot, with appropriate AI counter of course
So yes, is a compatibility issue now, but not really a lethal problem. You can use my link, ERA 395, for playing all maps available, there are no restrictions, mod manager works, HD mod available. Keeping two Heroes folders today is not a size problem.
I don't know about ACM or TUM, are they using WoG scripts as requirement? If not, they will be compatible with Era 395 as well.

No, you can download a clean and standalone version of ERA 3, but it comes with very few mods and especially without WoG scripts.
The ERA launcher is just a tool get a bunch of up-to-date mods and keep them updated.

The launcher will overwrite or better say update your WoG scripts. Many have been rewritten and some things have been changed. Which normally means that older maps that relied on these scripts may no longer work. Its like with every software that gets updates. That means when playing older maps or scenarios that were made for ERA 2 it is better to use the old WoG scripts, for which these maps were tested.

ACM and TUM both worked on ERA 2 but since these mods are actively developed they now only work with ERA 3 and an updated ERM Framework mod.

Same as from the launcher. But less modifications, usually means less bugs

of course and you should

At least for ACM I can say that it can be played without WoG scripts mod.

Thanks Perry, that's really useful info. You said standalone ERA3 doesn't come with wog scripts. Do you know where you would get them from for this standalone setup?

I'm still a noob to this so I might be talking utter rubbish but wouldn't it be much better to pack the wog scripts mod from the old ERA version into an exe file and distributing that? Instead of asking players to make an additional install of an obsolete version of a platform? Or even just putting all the wog scripts into the timed events of the map?

But this is what is done. You have :
Era 3.95 install over clean Heroes. Has WoG original scripts and is compatible with everything written prior to 2023
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jdRBjTLq7YDfrhKp4O_THcBZUjuEIcZ_/view?usp=drive_link
Launcher : installs newest Era version. Has modified WoG scripts and will probably not work with prior mods using original wog scripts.
So just two folders. Don't ask me why it looks weird, I already pointed out that to Era developers. An optimal choice would have been that the launcher can switch between original and botched scripts, but it's their pick. That slowed down accessibility to old mods (like my maps for example) by 99%, not to mention angry people jumping on me every week because maps don't work.
