Well, that was my point, Putin did the less dumb thing - the less damaging Trump election I mean, which would have been to say "I want Trump to win". There is a plot there, now will it work enough, nobody knows.

His second consideration he may have been Trump would forced a settlement whereas the status quo would allow him to continue indefinently.
It depends on his assessment of the situation, lots of things only he is privy to.
What is ACTUALLY his best choice even he may not have the info or awareness to decide.
You can plot this way or that, even make the 'wrong' decision but in retrospect everything was unimportant or inevitable.

I think it's pretty much inconsequential. The sort of people who actually pay attention to anything Putin says are also the people who have already solidly made up their mind how they are going to vote.

Trump has weirdly resulted in a tighter and stronger NATO in Europe because of European countries being nervous about US commitment to NATO or lack thereof under Donald Trump. But, Trump is definitely a preferable president for Putin and his war in Ukraine because Trump really badly wants to see the war end, and although the US is supplying less than the combined total of European countries, it is still by far the single largest supplier of equipment as a country. So yeah, a Trump presidency would be nice for Putin if Trump immediately mounts pressure on Zelensky to reach an agreement. But then, if Zelensky does do Trump's bidding (which is highly unlikely), Zelensky would be replaced with somebody else. Ceding territory to Russia is still extremely unpopular in Ukraine by about 3 to 1, although that ratio is slowly improving in Putin's favor as the war drags on and as more expendable bags of flesh from the motherland are tossed into the meatgrinder to make whatever territorial gains they can before they are eventually killed in action. But, as things are right now in 2024, the Ukrainians would eat Zelensky for lunch if he caved in to an American president. They want to keep fighting, so that is what they are going to do.

Not that it matters what I think, but I do think Ukraine should try to barter a deal with Russia that would involve ceding some territory. I realize that is still years away from becoming a reality. It is going to happen though and nobody can do anything about it because Russia as a federation does not have checks and Putin can keep things going as long as he wants. The federal judges and the legislators have been rendered mostly impotent.

As far as Trump's image here in the US - mostly related to election fraud claims - the GOP is unquestionably in a weaker position than the Democrats as far as credibility (although with the economy, Trump is leading over Harris). It is true that Hillary Clinton claimed Donald Trump was an illegitimate president (which is the same thing as claiming election fraud) but she also eventually gave that position up as more information came out. Now, did Trump do that? We're approaching 4 years and he is still claiming the same thing he always has. He has not budged, and if he does end up losing next month I'm curious to see what he'll say then. My assumption is: he'll say there were 2 fraudulent elections in a row. His running mate and him will part ways after that point, since Vance has a long career ahead of him and he's never going to stick with that silly story once he is no longer the VP candidate.
