I'd rather die...? We never know what we gonna do in the critical situation!
One thing you know that you gonna die anyway and you may be I repeat maybe will not do one of that things that you ppl saying you ready to die for. And another thing is if you have a little chance to survive. 99.9% of all ppl will go for this chance, most likely. Self-preservation always was issue #1 for humankind.

This might help you understand what is important. Is standing up for your religion worth your life? If your religion means anything to you than being a martyr might be worthwhile. Is defending your country, land and family worht your life, than being a soldier might be a way to go. What beliefs are you thinking of when you say death is preferable?
Gandalf was a hypocrite, he might think that mercy is good on a small scale as with Golem. But he sure helped the men kill thousands when they where fighting nameless hordes of orcs and such.

After reading this thread i must say that oldtimers posts makes most sense to me. If we look away from the people that tosses id say some of these "ill rather die than" are just BS.
The human being is one of the most selfish creatures there is. Every day millions and millions of people does things they shouldnt have done for the best of the world, they do it because it improves their personal situation. Some people makes worser things than others but in the long run most things are just for personal gain.
My point is you dunno what you would die for until to are put in that very situation. Everyone can say "i would rather die than bla bla bla" but you really dont know that do you?
