"best"?  "better"?  You have to give more than that.  People like different kinds of things.  Is a map good because it is challenging?  easy to memorize?  full of fun artifacts and resources?  balanced?  or what?

everyone will give you a different answer.

Hurry if you want to make a new map!!! HoMM4 is coming!!!

And you may find no one plays your map because we're all too busy playing HoMM4!

A good map usually consists of good story line, excellent use of space and terrains/map layout, and challenging and well-thought battle.
But yeah different people have different preference.

here're some tips:
- think of the backbone of your story-line but don't get too bogged down. More stories will come as you make the map.
- think of the difficulty your map will be. As well as whether it will be for MP or Single Player.
- hurry and make your map.

i guess i got one map.. playability as good as it gets, max playesr max caxtles max mapsize (full underground too), resources are low at beginning so they game will take longer, but incomes get pretty high with that many castles..
it is also harde to kill the cpu totally and he might get a good army eventhou he's weak at some point etc..
the map aint very pretty to looks but thats because it is supposed to be functional. You can also play the map time and time again befcause everything is either random or symmetric, and knowledge about locations of stuff wont help that much. Ive spent veery long time editing and for me its the best map ive played, also cause i can play it several times eventhou i made it myself. =)

My prefferences

I usually preffer a medium map with underground, with lots of events, but not too many towns. But, trully, I don't think you can make a map that will satisfy all the players...better make a map that you would like to play!!!

I got a map from AstralWizard.com called Verania's Ruler.  Huge map, with almost all objects.  Very well rounded and has been play tested.  The object is to get the Spellbinder's hat, but you can aslo defeat all your opponents.  Sweet map.  Will easily take you months, game time, to beat it.  It can have up to 8 players, but I would only do that hotseat, because it would take forever online!

never played heroes over the net

Your in for the biggest change in the game ever when u start playing multiplayer on the net.
I have played this game since its inception of King's Bounty (on my trusty Apple IIE) but never played online until HMM3 was released (was that almost 2 years ago, I think so) and thank you whoever posted the link for d/l Kings Bounty, has brought back some fun memories.

Well I thought I was a good player b4 I got on the net, I quickly learned that it is a whole new world (and a very fun one) You will learn many new tactics and be amazed at the quality players you meet from all over the world.

There are some very good tournaments for anyone interested, Tournament of Honor and Champions of Tymeria are 2 I very much like right now. and Tourney or not, there are usually about 100 people playin or looking anytime you want a game in the Microsoft Zone heroes room

Come on in sometime and say hi, mebe cross swords with me
I'm Rare_Sir_Loin on the Zone, If your new to multiplayer Ill prolly hand you your head hehe (Like I said, multiplayer and single player against the computer are 2 different worlds) otherwise I'll try my best to, and much fun will be had

Thx for the info Zud. I´d like to meet you in a game someday, but unfortunately I won´t be able to for another couple of months. (got a modem at the moment)

I´m not exactly a newbie in multiplayer-games. Have played lots of them with friends and never lost.
What I meant earlier was if there is just you and your opponent on the maps or do you use computerplayers as well? Its a huge difference.

modems and ai player

some maps have ai (computer) in them, some dont, most don't I think because it is hard to balance the map.  Either AI is too easy to beat and one player gets a almost free half built castle or he is too strong and kills everyone

as far as playin on line, a modem is fine.  lol I have been using an old 28.8 modem since my 56k was hit by lightning, 6 months ago.  I would go get another 56, but the 28.8 is fine and im lazy. also tryin to talk myself into adsl or cable.

... vanadia´s ruler - it´s not a bad one - and true... it isn´t that hard, but takes a long time to finish (against AI) - an eternity against other human players

My up-date is that it all depends on skill level of map making and patience to make a good map espically adding thre trees and obstacles to the map to make it hard.  But i like to  make maps when i have the time and i think that map makings is more a skil that best or better its just depends on who is playing the map lol some like the Inferno type maps some like forest terrian and some like Water transpotation well  it all depends i say

The thing I would most like to see is a one-level map with the maximum number of players and plenty of resources and mines so that it would be very difficult to gain lots of resources. It would be a true skill tester.

I for one always the long epic maps like the pride series.

On the other hand I also like maps in which you start with alimited number of creatures which you'll have the entire map long with a limited number of spels etc (like Adventures of Wren: I believe).

Pen and The Sword is also great.

Yesterday I finished Blackbeards Secret. Lots of water/islands, but still a lot of fun.
Diplomacy realy hurts this level though.

It all depends on taste and balance in a MAP!
