I am currently playing Docfritch and I have a 56K connection , not sure of his though.  And our transfers averaged 30 seconds. Not to bad I think.

About game play, so far I found out that you need to make sure you dont accidentally change your devil into a vamp in the converter building.  I spent 4000 on a devil and poof it was gone!!! Live and learn I guess. =)

I MISS the count down beeper!!!!!  So many times I forget to watch the clock and POOF my turn switches over and I didnt know my time was about up!!!  I used to hate the 10 sec beep beep beep but now I MISS it!

The chat window is great.  I love it soo much better then the h3 chat.  Although took me a LONG time to figure out that whipping sound was an incoming chat. lol

I got ALOT to learn, but I am slowely slowely starting to like it.  Not all the way there yet but can see some potential.

Ofcourse after Doc crushes me I will prolly go crawling back to h3.  LMAO  j/k

need to kick your ass too jinxer

I suffered a defeat to kracx.  My problem is I still play like a speedeamon, even in homm4.  We were running 4 mins, but my turns were taking 20 seconds to 2 mins at best.  I was necro, he was life, I built venom spawn instead of vampires, next time I wont make that mistake!

well I built venom spawn also in my game with Doc, which is also why I was soo depressed to have wasted a devil into a vamp, I hadnt built vamps.

But so far in game venom spawns seem quite strong!  And they are ranged.  I havent used vamps yet if they are stronger then spawns then all I can say is OMG!  I like the cerebus, they seem quite strong also.

@ Vesuvius -- Soon as I get a few games under my belt, I will gladly give ya a shot at me. BUT as much bragging as you been doing about kicking my butt... if I happen to beat you I will be expecting a Frontpage news item on TOH proclaiming your loss and Jinxers greatness!!!     hehe

I've played a 3 player free-for-all game with a pretty instant transfer rate.(3-5 sec) I was order and the other guys were death and might. The might guy only started playing H4 a day ago so he was behind from the start.
After about 5 h of playing, I met with death guy and we had about the same army size. - I totally crushed him, I had the bigger half of my army left after the battle. The key to victory was slow + displacement + shooters.

The connection is pretty much irrelevant, you just need a better computater.

No actually, i don't think i do, lol

I do agree however that the actual computer itself is likely more of a factor than connection speed, which is unfortunate to see that a player with a slower computer apparantly can slow the game down for all players ..

But anyways, as i said in my first post, it was my first impression based on my first game.. so hopefully will play more with different people to see how games compare.

GameSpy is very stable -- which it was not when I was playing Fallout Tactics a year ago. I wasn't looking forward to the switch from the zone for this reason and the cartoony look but it's not bad.

Played one game 1vs1 with two good connections (cable and T1) and two beefed up comps and immobile neutrals. 4 hours, no crashes, no glitches, fast loads (> 5 seconds). Pretty cool if you ask me.

Game play is slower than h3 -- turns take longer, you don't get as much done, it takes longer to meet on an equivelent map. I think maps will have to take the lack of chaining into account. (I was playing a JB map with the wall separating 2 sides).

Strategies -- a ton more options than h3! I was toast this game...academy is powerful on a closed map where you can't rush. I pulled preserve and you have to play nature differently depending on map. My downfall was not developing a tactics hero I think. Grandmaster archer + melee and nature troops doesn't quite make it against a genie led army....

I think I'll be back for a while!

so many options

I see so many options in games for h4, that its hard to say 1 strategy is best.

Im still workin on my maps tho, and soon they will be done. Im makin final edits on them all, so none are the same as any previous version of the map u may have seen.

LOl just have to comment on 1 thing Salpinx said.  We need to counter for the lack of chaining.???  No we dont chaining was removed from the game. Instead of making the maps try and counter this, just try and find new in game tactics to make due with the way the game is designed.

I just think as JB said this game has TONS upon TONS of potential and some of you people are already trying to find ways to rush to end the game.

In my game with Doc, we are in week 3 day 7 I think and even though it seems like the game should be much farther, at the same time it seems like I have bearly done anything!!!  It will be a shame if the mass amount of people insist on cloning map designs that facilitate a fast kill design. I am not wanting to make this another RUSH thread, its just that as JB pointed out this game has so much available in the game would be a shame to not take advantage of what it has to offer soley because people want a 2 hour game.  I can just see it now, games ending with heroes having 4 skills all basic lol!

YO JINXER! Just making some observations on my first game. Heaven forbid that I use the word "rush" lol. My point being that a map designed for H3 plays quite different when it is converted over to h4.... In fact, I don't think the mainstream H3 ToH maps convert that well over to H4 for a number of reasons. The main one being that chaining is gone and those maps were designed with chaining in mind.

Seeing as I was the front runner in the RPG land tourney Ves did a while back, I think I'm a proponent of exploring a wide variety of playing styles

My judgements as to what styles I will play the most is still very much up in the air -- salpinx

Just a swipe from someone who hasn't played...

I have played H4. Very different, some things I liked, some things I didn't like, but one thing I was well aware of was that MP was going to be longer than I usually liked it in H3. One thing I do know is that the enemy of TBS games is the time factor it takes to play the game and regardless of my personal opinion, many people are put off by the chess-like slowness that it takes to play Heroes.

Heroes 3 was (is?) a niche game, directed solely at people like us who tend to look at TBS games in a different light. For 90 percent of online gamers out there, I think they see a turn-based strategy as a thing of the past and with the apparent time it takes for data transfers with H4, I kinda hear another nail being smacked into the coffin of the genre.

Heroes 4 seems to have been rushed, the lack of patches and so forth six months after it's release have just reinforced that conclusion for me. In a way, I'm not too sad that I can't play Heroes 4 online because from what I hear, it's like a Dark Age out there, lol!

I'm certain that you're right

If I was able to play Heroes 4 at all then I'd be online too and I'd be doing a bit of both. But I don't have a computer anymore (for now, lol!) and therefore, I can't play H4. I am sure that given time, it will become as great as H3 was, maybe even better, but my statement was that long transfer times do not help the popularity of the game and the less popular it is, the less people play it and the less chance you have to get a good online game going. I could play 4 player FFA and not worry about transfer times, even with Qu_Purple (queenie where are you?). But if I'm looking at several hours extra per game, then I gotta find the time. Easy for those of you who are at college and have nothing to do, but for those of us who have jobs and schedules and things flying everywhere, well you can't just pull two hours out of thin air whenever you want to play a game.

I was late coming into HoMM3 and I'll be late coming into HoMM4, but I won't play online unless I have the necessary hardware and connection speed and time to be able to play it within a reasonable time frame. Hell, I'm not a speed freak, I like to play without time limits and I couldn't really care if it takes a week or a month to play a game, but if it takes a month, I'd like to spend that month playing the game and not have all the players sitting around twiddling their thumbs whilst the data transfer module pushes a move through the telephone or cable line, lol!

*smile*

PS: I can judge some more if you want me too...

Multiplayer has exceeded my expectations

After starting 5 games ( all of which are saved and need to be finished ),  the wide variety of tactics that each different player brings to a game is overwhelming.

Each Alignment/town type  has it's specific talents and each have an ability to couterpose threats posed by all of the alingments.

I've noticed that distress seems to set in when wandering monsters cause setbacks to my opponents, and some have opted to concede or withdraw.  The H3 sydromes ( habits) have to be discarded.  The myriad of successful combinations of strategies and tactics in H4 have made setbacks less dramatic as well as less devastating to one's overall game success.

Chaining in h3  I'd always considered a "bug" that seemed convienient not to fix.  H4  has a way to chain but it's very subtle and only comes into play after one of the above forementioned "setbacks".

It's an enjoyable game and I've recommended to my map counsel associates that computer players be removed  and replaced with neutral towns for the time being or at least until an appreciable percentage of gamers can compensate for the excessive delays these computer opponents seem to create.

I'm looking forward to learning more and more from each of the opponents I face and what I am sure will be some unique and intriguing ploys they bring to the game.

Until we meet in the fields and forest of Heroes

Played my first game this morning against Psychobabble which was my first MP game.
I easily got outmaneuvered by a stealth hero on Boring's Mountain who got my main city right after I built my black dragons.
We had no problem connecting through Gamespy.
There was a short 5-6 seconds delay between turns (I had DSL and he had cable).
It was really fun and took about 1½ hours.

My First Impressions

I have been trying to do H4 online for about a week now.  Learing a lot.....

The Good:

Its fun not knowin what I should be doing and learning a new version of heroes.

The Questions:

the opals of knowledge are easy, give to mage. I usually give speed gems to mage also (I want them to go asap in combat) but the offense and defense gems...to fighter always or mebe to mage to protect em a bit more?

I would love to take chests for exp, but cash is critical in this game and not plentiful.  Is anyone takin chests for exp on most maps? so far I can't

The Ugly:

The waiting for remote player error.

The Kludgy Multi Interface (Kinda stupid you have to pick map before opponent is in game, no way to go over your map list
Also this game still has a memory leak.  my computer gets slower and slower as I play.  I have to reboot it every few hours and anytime that I am done playin H4
The slow movement of heroes (you can only chain headstones and artifacts) make it so I really miss the scholar skill from h3.  If I finally get that next lvl of magic ability, It's many days wasted to visit castles and learn the new spells, sure u can flee from a battle with no army on ya, but then u still have to work your way back out to where u were.

Although I have several (legitimate I think) issues, Im having a great time with the game right now.

quick way of gettin a heroe where ya need him

use the resurreection highway. you cann't chain troops but ya can chain yer heroe to a towen to be res'ed. On many maps it's a quick way of gettin a hero to a different part of map. also quick way of res.'n him you can use single troop units for the purpose
