Homm4 starters guide
First of all you need to make sure you have upgraded your versions and I know it's boring but take the time to read, or roughly scan, the read me file so you know what you have. It clearly informs you of some important details...like lets say has multi-plaer patch... 
F2 opens the chat dialog box.
If you hear a whip snapping you have a message
if your sound is off you cannot tell if the other player(s) are talking to you.
If you alt-tab to minimize HOMM4..have your sound on, because it is not like HOMM3 where the game will just pop-up on you, you have to goto taskbar and click on it.
If the screen (in the middle of turns) comes up with a message that says "waiting for remote player" and you cant do anything...this is a good thing your opponant is being attacked by a wandering monster 
You must have a hero to take over a unoccupied town (one no one owns yet)
Lastly if you have a problem with a firewall... ask someone in gamespy u will get help...well most likely you will get some assistance.

& for me I never twsted since I dl the patches but you can just use sound effects to hear if it's your turn if you are in zone

And don't forget the common little things like:
If you can only play for an hour or so, it's nice if you mention that before you start playing.
If you do have to go; Tell your opponent, try to arrange a meet later to finish, save, end your turn and then quit when it's your opponent's turn.
Also, if you are using the password protect for saved games always tell your opponent the password after the game is over. That way you can both go over the saves and learn from the game.

a little add on... it is a wise idea if you like heroes to buy them when u can, your time (7 day waiting period) does not go by the week, but by the time you buy him/her.

as found on a couple other links, and personally do NOT use auto combat vs opponants it will freeze your game.
Yes splexx I did when i had like 3 troopies, and was doing something else too lol.
