Xtreme lag | y? what can i do?

hello,

i suffered an extreme lag twice. The first one was with a ping of 350 (as Gamespy Arcade sais) the second one with 150. Both games were initiated via Gamespy Arcade. I checked the bandwidth with the one with 350, it was ok (16 kB / s, my maximum).

It looked like this: Most of the time both of us waited. It took about 10 minutes after the end of one's turn until it was the opponent's turn.

Why does that happen? What can I do about it?

not much

its partly due to the strength of your system, but upgrading to a higher bandwidth speed helps (or playing someone who does).

Heroes 4 does have a data transfer prob....it seems to send data from all turns played in the game so far, not just the last one. At least that is what it appears to do. No good send 300k od data when you only need 20k to play.

Start a second career

I find that I have enough time to do odd jobs aound the house in between turns in a 2minute 2player medium map with no computer players.
I played a 4 player with 1 from France , 1 from Germany and 1 in Florida and I could have started a second career waiting for my turn

Try closing the game, and GameSpy and re-starting it. That worked for me the couple of times I had extreme lag. I don't recommend playing with more than 1 other person online at the moment, the lag (min 5 mins per turn) is just too extreme. 1v1 games are great fun though, and if you have a good amount of ram you can afford to alt-tab and browse the internet while waiting for your turn - the sound thankfully notifies you of incoming chat or new turn even if the game is minimised.

Actually I've found that the bulk of lag in heroes4 depends not so much on connection as people will advise.. although this does seriously cause problems..

But if your playing a map with a computer player, or wandering monsteres activated you can bet your sucks no matter what the connection you'll be waiting 10mins between turns.

I've played a few games with neutral comp players.. "no color" and stationary monsters and managed to get well into the 3rd week of play before a noticable slow down.. PS with a dial up player.

so might not work for all.. but let the fastest comp go last.. and turn off the show enemy movement option. It will help speed things up.

So wandering monsters actually do influence map speed? I couldn't see why they would... does anyone know or can you definatley confirm this? Or is it just suspicion...

wandering monsters

In my limited experience, wandering monsters increased game lag tremendously.  usually I am getting 1-2 minute xfers, the game I played with wandering creatures, It was around 4 min

I have a 64k Modem connection thats going to be upgraded soon to satellite, my only option. Living in the woods does have some drawbacks

However....  I have been playing a LOT of Barbarian Duels games because the transfer is much faster with that map than many others. I think it's because of the nature of the map. There is not much on it. I have tried some of the other maps in multi and the transfer time is ridiculous.

Anyone else notice this happening the same way?

So if it looks like I am playing only 1 map, uhhhh... I guess I am

ya I think the monsters does play a factor in it , because my and my friend played a 1v1 game on unknown lands
(Tortoise Vs Stone)  with non-stationary guards and it finally got to the point where i called him up on the phone and said WTF IS TAKING YOU SO LONG!!! taaa daaa another heroes IV player discovers the transfer bug... Such a shame, we did however improve the speed somewhat, we changed our config.sys to RUN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and restarted, he had a 30 second wait most of the time while mine was about 1-2 minutes.... an improvement but aggravating none the less...   I'll try a smaller less crowded map next time.

Wandering Monsters --> lag

hallo,

imo that's why: As you know you can not only replay the neutral turn and other player's turn when it is your turn, but you can also see it in realtime. That means that it works like this: The band of neutral harpies moves one step, this step is send to all other players (their homm4 now looks if it is in a visalbe area and thus must be shown to the player). After their homm4s said "ok, we've got it" the harpies do the next step, and so on. And that for each and every army, neutral or not, that moves!

When the delay is more than a minute, I cancel the game - that is intolerable!

Wandering monsters ...

Also attack you after you have finished your turn which increases the amount of battles per turn. Often attacking scouts which means a complete waste of unprepared troops.
I lost 3 scouts in one move  and it added 10 minutes more to my turn making it a 15 minute 2minute turn lol
