Homm3 castles: avoid attacking early altogether?

I know almost anyone can relate when I say that Homm3 castles (in the first few weeks) seem almost impossible to win, even with a moderate garrison inside. I know that their are pretty good tactics that can be used when you go for a seige battle, but the task always seems daunting! I've got my ears open to suggestions on whether or not to think about rushing out and trying to win against a castle in the first few weeks.

Hi to win during a castle siege lets say week 2, one has a better chance using a magic hero. try to block gate with one of yr stacks so that the defender cant get out, then hit away with what ever magic u got (preferably a shower or something better than an arrow anyways

cheap tactic .. maybe.. but its effective and gets the job done in that early siege.

well...

this also depends on the map and resources available to you. on a map like desert war,or bob2,where your stats are gonna be in the mid to high teens,(week 2)if you see you are way ahead of your opponent,level him . I do so by choosing ballistics early,helping greatly in sieges.  imo ballistics should only be preceded by earth magic,logistics,and tactics in order of importance.(and air but only if you see haste in guild)

on randoms,same applies, especially if rampart. once again,i think rampart is the strongest castle through weeks 1 and 2,so use it. silver pegs are awesome at getting in quick,elves can do some mean stuff even over walls,and few other classes can build levels 1-6, and have them bought by 2nd day of the 2nd week(if not 1st).  once again,ballistics is a godsend. then,if you have a good magic hero,say deemer,solmyr,or even aislin,get lotsa mana and smack your opponent like a foo,as arch or TEL would say  .

I'm a builder; I always wait. Than I closely monitor opp wif view air and his amount of gold and stats and atack when he dun like it.

I hate playing guys like Archie and Frank who rush to me week 1 & 2

Back to Archie's tactic...

Harpy hags will be one of the best choices to block the gate with, as they'll still be able to attack whatever is inside without suffering casualties (unless they are being shot at over the walls that is).

Hags are not the kind of Tank unit you want for blocking a gate
There Damage usually doesnt mattermuch anyway, so they prolly the last unit i would put there

I always think along the lines of having a well balanced army (if that's achievable). Flyers, Foot soldiers, and Ranged soldiers. Flyers with high speed (like efreet, Silver Pegasi, etc.) have the delight of being able to wait, attack an opponent, and run back to where it's safe. I've used this extensively in seiges. Foot soldiers are good for blocking the gate and possibly luring enemy troops outside their wall(well, I guess that would only work for A.I.)If they can lure someone onto the gate and kill them, the gate remains open! (Kinda humurous, using the defender's troops against him! Kinda morbid too. Archers can be pretty deadly when there's a bunch to be had, and if the defenders can't match their firepower. Other than that, they can just help cut down your enemy. Some of this stuff is pretty obvious, but it is pretty effective. I try to build the tactically most valuable soldier dwellings from my town, and worry about the worthless ones later.

Yeah, but the pegasi are retaliated against plus they don't come back after their attack. Of course there are ways of avoiding retaliation like sucking it up with some toughies. But either way, the hags will attack twice as often because every second turn of the pegasi is used for returning to safety.

Sad, but true. The good thing though is if you have a castle you can hoard pegasi. 10 a weak! I think. Anyway, I always seem to have a lot of em when a battle comes along.

Andi is right of course that u need a 'tank' to block the gate. 80+ health-guys.

HMM are u ok andi u usually recognize a great tactic!
putting hags at gate is a good idea since if the monster blocking the gate dies the gate will still be blocked !!!

so hags is great as gate blocks since they dont matter much and still will be able to deliver the little dmg the do since they jump back after hitting. its good since u dont have to waste another unit standing their doing nothing for the entire fight..

and i dont usually attck week 2, week 3 is when i come knocking usually

Just to clarify..

u want the least important fighting unit to block the gate.
if playing stronghold preferably goblins.
if the unit dies the gate still wont open for the defender..

but theres always the issue of getting the  block to the gate in time .. if opponent realize whats about to happen he will be sure to put one of his own units on the moat gate.. to insure he will be able to move out.

so it could be worth sacrifacing yr fastest unit to get to gate or teleport / haste a bad unit ..

in most fights theres often a way to replace gate block with a less good unit if u are forced to block gate with angels or whatever yr fastest units are..
