Speed Deamon *suggestion*

i feel Speed tournament will be prettier if dedline extends from 20march to 1 april
..some clusters have players with 1 win on 2nd place, others 1 players only!
cause some players played only 1-2 games so far or some have 0-4 losses..like me

Personally, I would have liked to see more higher ranked players play this tournament.

I have come to realize that 80% of Barons or higher ranked take super long turns, and I guess this works for them because they win a lot.

However, I do believe that if you are truly a great Heroes player, then what is the big deal in playing different length in turns. I mean, shouldn't a true, great, Heroes player be able to adapt to any game settings?

I guess I'll have to purchase pots of coffee before embarking on a 4 min turn game on Circle of Life......

Ok Karim let me enlight u : playing heroes is like playing chess... u can't just roll the dice and move the horse. It's about thinking and concentration. And if the opponent beats be, it must be because he played better than me, not because my turn ends and I haven't made all my moves. That's why I refuse the play turns smaller than 4 mins and if someone wants quick games should stick to counter-strike . I'm sure that all good players agree with me that 6 mins is perfect for playing, to have enough time to make all your moves.

lol, I never thought this would happen, but I actually have to agree with AzureDragon

I stopped playing turn lengths quicker than 4 mins in HoMM III long ago. Maybe it would be different if 3DOH had implemented a "swap army" and "split army into 1-1-1-x stacks" button.

From my poor h4 experience, fights take the most time anyways, so doesnt really matter if someone spends 2 minutes more or less on the map.

Heroes is like a game of chess.....

Well, I do respect your point of view, as your stats speak for itself.

However, stating taht Heroes is like chess is a matter of perception.

Assume that I claim to be a very good car driver. I should be able to drive both long distances and short rally time races. A car is a car. If my specialty is limited to rally-type races but I suck at long distance driving, and I DESIRE to improve my driving skills, then I will change my thought process and adapt to the new environment.

Why is it that I can beat barons on Speed Daemon and not on 4 min turns?? That is because I am a better player with 1 min turns. IF I can do it, why can't you?

My point is that if you claim to be a good Heroes player, then you should be able to adapt to any turn limit, and adapt your style of play to 1 minute turns. If you can't, then I see this as a weakness or unwillingness to try differet game settings.

The biggest difference between Chess and Heroes is the luck factor. Chess has no luck at all, and Heroes, whether you agree or disagree has a much higher luck factor to it.

I am not claiming to be the best palyer around, by far. All I am stating is that a true good player should be able to play in any type of environment; just like a soldier can fight in desert, rainy, or snowy conditions. A good player will learn and adapt to any environment.

I always thought that Level 4's were a myth, a legend, a fairy tale.

Thanks Val, now I can improve my gaming.

btw, 25$ a ticket, when are you coming down to Montreal? I am more than willing to spend unlimted time limits when it comes to attracting the opposite sex

Hello all =)

My opinion about this:

A person who plays better with 4 min than 1 min turn limit isn't necessarily a worse player.

Consider this:

Does computer speed affect how much time you have at    your disposal? When you click at your castle to build something, will you lose seconds waiting for the town screen to pop up?

Do you always start at 1 min exactly when you get control of your heroes/units?

When leaving the combat screen, how many seconds will you lose waiting for the victory screen to pop up?

Your mouse suddenly drops to the floor, you lost 10 seconds of your time trying to find it while frantically trying to recall what you were planning to do with your turn.... is this what you would call "lack of skill"?

Your little son/daughter suddenly starts screaming and your turn just started... to play on or.... 58 sec 57 sec 56 sec...

Stuff does happen, in a 3+ hour long game there is always a good chance you'll be distracted at one point, maybe during your most important turn.. who knows..

As said before, most of the time is spent in combat anyway, 1 min 2 min 4 min, it won't affect the game time that much, it will just make "rl distractions" affect your game that much more. And it favors people with fast fingers... fast computer... with a dark room closed from the rest of the world..

And I could go on..

But I'll spare those who like 1 min turns; they probably don't have time to read this anyway

well from my perspective

When I used to play and be on the top ranks, to me, all my opponents (with few exceptions, like Antal) were all too slow.  I played just as good as them, but didnt take as long.  But I also came from the Real Time Strategy circle way before I got into homm.  There, like playing Command & Conquer, Starcraft, or Total Annhilation, you need to be fast, think fast, and move your mouse with speed.  So speeddeamon works for me.  I may be able to achieve in 2 minutes what others take in 4.

So I agree with Karim, its just a different playing style, and for those who may not have the patience (or the time) to play a longer, 4-6 minute game.  In fact, the longer my opponents' turns were, the more impatient and frustrated I would get, and I would get more hasty and make more mistakes.

P.S. the game I play most right now and have time for is Command & Conquer:  Generals.

I guess it is the impatience that turns me off

I would like to add to what Ves just wrote. I guess that it is my impatience that drives me to make hasty decisions, and hence mistakes, for example, forgetting to take the dead skeleton in front of town.

Maybe I am the one who should change the way I see this game with 4-6 minute turns.

All that I am saying here is that every player has different styles of play which they like to adhere to; and  secondly, I pat myself on the back for playing at different game settings; this shows my flexibilty. My efficiency is what needs improving.

Am I the only player out there who becomes impatient when the opponent's turn takes 10-20 minutes?

I just don't know what to do in between turns (wasn't there a post on this topic)

I do learn a lot from playing the good players ( you should have seen Zud's army on Circle of Life....Zud is a slower player, but man does he get things done)

Ves, don't get me wrong... I was unbeatable in Age of Empires II, Expansion, so when I need to be fast, I'm fast... But I heroes must be planned carefully (i've seen to many games lost by a potion, 1 movement point, bad positioning of troops not to mention u forgot shackles on u because turns passed). BTW we can play an WC3 anytime Ves

I agree with Karim almost for the most part, but that mostly because I win more at 1 and 2 min turns.  Probably because that's what I play most with Jex, and Ed.

I agree that there is a lot to keep track of and think about, but that is what you should be doing when it's the other players turn.  Instead of surfing the web or chatting in the lobby keep a notebook and write out your next turn.

If someone is using a full 6 mins every turn good for them, but I've seen players that sit there and waste a min every turn figuring out what they should do next.  And that's annoying because they should have been doing that while waiting for their turn imo.

There are people that are incapable of playing with anything less than 4 min turns due to health reasons.  You just have to be flexible.

Edited due to spelling mistakes.  I really hate them.

Drifting away from post..........nevertheless

Joel, Writing out the next few turns with key objectives sounds very plausible, and I will start doing that.

My question is: Strategically & generally speaking, how should you prioritize the following items?

1) Getting Other Town(s)
2) Flagging Gold Mine (s)
3) Flagging resource mines
4) Powering up Heroes

Could the minds of the game please share their input.
Thanks

no prioritize
just try not run round in circles
..and calculate,at time when army is able to kill almost anything ,to be where you should, not killing some lev2 outside town..
easy to say, needs concentration to do though

Slow old Man

I like 4 and 6 minute turns personally. I think the fact that all dont have a 2Gig pc with scads of resources is a factor.  I cant really relate to frustration with opponent when the transfer often takes longer than the turn. (thank you for putting out 2 crappy expansions and not addressing this issue at all 3do) also not even a new patch to address bugs (movement) with the newest expansion.

Anyway

A couple thoughts on the game strats.

I like to get additional towns asap. they produce money and allow recruitment of another hero. 2 things u need asap on most maps.

I also like to try and clear area's while i walk thru them.  many go for one thing or another, thinking they will have time later to come back and clear that area. usually u will not. and to come back (running in circles) wastes a lot of time usually.

even though i am a lowly squire, I will give my opinion  I think this is definitely one of the most important things on all maps.  If you can cut your time by taking everything you can while in that area will give you advantage in time somerwhere else.  Not to mention, like zud said, a lot of times you wont be able to come back.

P.S. - insatiable, you know my loss to you was a fluke  We need to play again soon.

What about Magic Users

Here is a question for you:

When you are building a magic-user, you do realize that when you leave the castle and head off to clear the area, your magic user will gain levels from Advanced to Master spell casting level lets say. What if this hero ends up being 5 days or more away from castle, how do you get him back there to learn all the spells??

With archers, barbs, or Tactics heroes lets say, you dont really have to go back to castle because there are no spells to learn.

The only answer I have to this is to jump into a fight and retreat.

.......so much for Speed Daemon
