SARS

Well, It is could be the end....

The new virus apeared in China. Already about 3000 people died. No vaccine invented yet, because they can't stop virus from mutating into another form. And it can mutate really fast and easy.

What do you think ? Could it be worse, than AIDS ?

SARS is a very contagious problem in this world, I agree.

In China, hundreds of people have died from this sickness, and that dosen't include Hong Kong, where more than 100 people became victims of the SARS virus. SARS also had a severe impact in SE Asia, notably Singapore, and also in Canada, Germany and even on my own country, Australia, around Melbourne, where the impact is still minor.

I just hope, really hope that the doctors and scientists can find a vaccine and a cure for this epidemic so that it dosen't spread to the entire world.

As you may know, I am from Canada - Toronto to be exact - and SARS is quite a big problem around here. They declared us as one of the most dangerous countries to visit due to this disease, and most of the chinese malls, stores and restaurants are empty.

However, I do not think that this disease is as dangerous as the media makes it sound because most (almost all) of the people who died from it were very old and had health problems prior to SARS. This means that for the general public this may not be more dangerous than any other virus we have around - no reasons to wear masks in public (as some people do).

I am certain that the scientists of this modern age will have no problem finding the cure but even if they fail this thing is bound to be gone by itself in a year or so.

SARS, what a big whodoo about nothing, you know what is more dargerous than SARS, the flu, diarrhea, and hundreds of "common" ailments.  Sars has a very small death rate and is beilg hugely overblown by the media.  Don't be afraid...fear gets good ratings.

I think so too, that SARS is not too much of a big deal compared to other problems. But I remember to have heard that the death rate were 18% ... not a number that I would consider to be small.

Indeed. Think of:

"The man has weapons of mass destruction!" (still unproven)
"He is 6 months away from the nuclear bomb!" (simply a propaganda lie)
"He is a threat to us, comparable to Hitler and Stalin!" (just absurd)

Fear gets very good ratings. Fear can be a powerful tool.

Oops, my bad - wrong thread.

Whether overblown by the media or not, SARS is still a very bad thing to happen in society. Every day, many more new SARS cases are reported over the globe. So now, is it time for this problem to be ignored and let it rip through the globe? The answer is: NO

And of that 250+ dead, the big majority are in China and Hong Kong, where SARS is the most strongest felt.

MORE than one billion people worldwide could be infected by the deadly SARS virus within a year, a leading UK scientist has warned.

Dr Patrick Dixon, a specialist in predicting global trends based at London's Development Management School, said SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) had the potential to turn into a pandemic and infect more people than AIDS.

The grim prediction comes as a Melbourne infection control specialist warned the virus could destroy Third World countries.

Glenys Harrington, who flew to Manila yesterday to join the World Health Organisation's assault on SARS, said the virus was a major threat to developing nations.

"Countries that are Third World or very poor may in fact be easily overwhelmed by SARS," she said.

"It could devastate some of these countries. It's important to offer any kind of assistance to them now.

"If we don't have a global effort to help countries that are under-resourced, it can get out of control."

Sars death rate 'higher'

The death rate for Sars could be significantly higher than previously thought, according to an British expert's study into the pneumonia-like virus.
The research by Professor Roy Anderson, due to be published in a medical journal next week, is expected to say the virus could kill between 8% and 15% - or one in seven - of those infected.

Today the authorities shut down every public meeting place in Beijing. Malls, Restaurants, clubs, post offices etc.

Anyway, it's definitely good to take SARS seriously, but scaring people and/or worrying too much about it won't do any good either. People should take the necessary and reasonable precautions, and try to live their lives as normally as possible. This goes for the countries/cities not attacked, of course. That's my take on things.

God bless and good health to all of you

you know what will happen if the virus mutates into a even faster spreading and more "lethal"(i mean starts severaly affecting younger and younger age groups within weeks or days) the goverments will have to step in.... "god save us all"

step 1. Quarantine areas
step 2. Attempt to find a way to slow it spreading...
step 3. Congratulate themselves for being heroes.... OR
step 4. Realize it cant be stopped within a time frame and try to stop it from festering by whiping out populations then continue to step 3 again.. hopefully.

well i hope that this is just my funny way to rationalize things in a semi humorous fashion.
