single vs multiplayer

I played Heroes 3 for 4-5 years before I started playing it online, and everyone who has done the same thing knows that it is a completely different world. My prediction is: If you started playing online now, against people that has had more than 50 games online, that on an xl map, you would win perhaps 2 or 3 out of those 50 with the knowledge you currently have. A good single player is no match for an experienced multiplayer.

So don't worry, there will be plenty people who could beat you easily in the beginning, then hopefully (for you) less and less as you get more experienced with multi-playing.

Good luck, and don't be discouraged if you loose your first 30 games. :-)

You could not possibly believe how many times we have seen a Noob come here to tell us how good he/she is

Here are the facts:

1. Single-players often know more about the game than good Multi-players.

2. Good Multi-players ALWAYS know more about beating other humans than Single-players.

3. Good Single-players MAY become good Multi-players if they
play other good Multi-players and are willing to learn.

4. REALLY GOOD Multi-players dont give a ratz @ss about high scores and may have never seen a Black Dragon or Archangel on the score sheet.

5. A REALLY GOOD Single-player is normally considered an automatic free game for a good Multi-player.

....And thats the way it is.
Welcome aboard, and good luck!

Fix yer damn game! Thousands of others have made it work!!

Sorry.

I guess I confused you.

I have played multiplayer. Quite a number of times. But I played it HOTSEAT. And I played it against people who got much better scores than me in single player.

I have got ArchAngel and Black Dragon, but most of the time I just play the map for fun, not for some high score. I play it to explore the map, and to win it. And I feel good about winning no matter what the damn score.

The reality is that increasing the computer AI doesn't make any major difference, since it is still stupid as anything, and change the amount of resources available depends on the map as to how hard it makes it. If you set yourself on Impossible difficulty (no resources or money) on a map where there are 0 resources lying around, and every mine is heavily protected, then there is no chance for you to win. So I would never play such a map on Impossible. I might do it on Hard, but thats about it. Where is the fun in playing a game that you know you can't win? No point for me.

Anyhow, who really cares.

I played StarCraft online, having finished the entire single player thing, and I think my record was 25 wins and 138 losses. The speed of my internet connection hurt me, as all of the servers were in the USA (giving them a huge advantage straight up), and people with cable modems went ahead as well. At least with Heroes the speed won't be such a big factor.

I play lots of online games, and card games and the like. And I would much rather play against real people than some poorly designed AI. Sure, its fun to get through the scenarios, because they are interesting to explore, and the campaigns are even better. It is like a puzzle. But their brain is nothing. There is no fun in "beating" the computer. The fun is in exploring the map.

I don't really like the idea of a random map, because they are boring to me. But I guess if that is the only way to have a fair game in multiplayer, then thats fair enough. I made several of my own maps for multiplayer games, and had 6 player games on them.

I have never lost multiplayer. Played over 200 games on hotseat against maybe 10 or 15 good players, several of whom were virtually experts at single player.

I am sure that there is someone online who can play properly. So come on and beat me. It'd be good. But I need to be able to get it working first. You wouldn't believe how frustrating this has been. I wanted to play multiplayer online as soon as we finished our first hotseat game, because we realised that hotseat sucked.

no problem.

go to http://zone.msn.com/heroes/

you should be at least able to setup a .net account and install zone files. Just follow the directions, depending on your connection speed it might take some time. When it's done, enter Heroes lobby. Ask ppl in chat for help. If it doesn't work, I'm reachable via ICQ (forgot my number, maybe you can find it in my profile here). I should be available in the evenings (central european time).

As for being afraid of beating everyone online, don't worry too much. Even if you are a master of the game, against equally skilled players luck often decides the outcome, so you'll get a loss every now and then.

There's no reason why you shouldn't become a good online player in short time, a guy called wiggy_wam started out like you and made it. Numbercrunching isn't the most important thing though. Playing the map effectively is much more crucial. But you will find out yourself.

Okay, I think I tried that last year, in my last attempt to get multiplayer to work online. *frustration*. Anyway, I'll see if I can get it to work this time.

I work long hours right now, so I'm really only free to do stuff like this on weekends at the moment. I'll see if I can get some time to get it done.

Do you happen to have a firewall? That might be the case. If you do, you won't be able to host games. Just join. And still there might be some problems, like the game shutting down and stuff (as is the case with my HoMM2(didn't try HoMM3 online yet)).

i've Zone Alarm firewall www.zonealarm.com, and the default settings stop you from staying in a game longer than about 30 seconds.

To fix it do this:
There are 2 sliding bars that determine high/med/low security. Make sure both of these are medium, then u can host & join games and play as long as u like.

Cool.

I have some firewalls on my computer, and different security settings, and it is possible that they had prevented me from doing stuff like that. I will try out that tip next time. Thank you for the help.

Nope. No confusion here. I understand perfectly. You have no experience in Multi
Not trying to be a wise@ss, thats just the way it is.
Multi will open up a new world for you. Many new multi players scream "cheater" when they see what a truly skilled Heroes player can do.

Things you can expect to surprise you:

1. You WILL lose in the beginning.
2. A 4 minute game takes a LONG time to play in Multi.
3. Game play is tied to the maps. Different play style is required.
4. Multi games are often over in the 1st game month.

TEST: Just for practice to see how much you can learn, download the medium map "Super Heroes" from:

http://toheroes.com/h4maps/maps.html

Play the game until you can break thru to the center in the 4th week without losing a single man. (Some do it in the 3rd week).

By the way... Do you have Heroes installed to the DEFAULT location? If you have placed it somewhere else it wont work for multi.

I'll try this when I get a chance. As I said, I really want someone to guide me through this. It isn't anything to do with being afraid to play, or worried I'll lose, or anything like that. It is more about the fact that it won't work.

I used to think I was good at StarCraft before I played it online. And Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Diablo. Sadly, all 3 of those games were filled with cheaters, which makes me wonder how good I really was. Nonetheless, I was able to finish those games easily, and online, I'd win hardly any of my games. I do also play Metal Knights online, which is a strategy game. http://www.metalknights.com/. Its free to play (insert plug here). I am in the hall of fame, listed about 90 or so. heh. Most multiplayer games I've played I've been better than most, but few have I been the very best.

I can play 8ball, cribbage, bridge, and other online card games too. Oh, and chess. Does anyone here like chess?

I think right now that one game will do me. And I don't care if I get beaten. That doesn't have anything to do with it. Getting the thing to work is the most important bit

Actually, I'll add something here.

GrunanCross, since you seem likeable here, and we agree on a lot of things, I would like to play against you. I don't care if you're unbeatable, or if you are horrible. Ultimately, I want to go up against someone who is around about my level. To have fun. If you are too good for me, then I'll try someone who is a bit easier.

I think it might be good because you are trying to get the thing to work too. On the other hand, it'd be nice to play with someone who knows what to do.

Do I want to be number 1? Not really. Do I want to be the very best at it? Again, not really. It never really interested me. I like to play it for fun. I liked to get through maps. And I'd like to win, but for them to be challenging victories. So, ultimately, that would be the aim in multiplayer games too. And to have fun with it.

I always liked the wonderful game design in Heroes. Tis a pity that all of the multiplayer maps have to be random. Would make it a bit boring in my opinion. But so be it.

KUMA I have decided that you are prolly the biggest nOOb I know of, you should play some real SP games and come back and then tell me how good you are

Anyways, look why are you guys so bent up on this rank thing, who gives a crude. I could care less 'bout a rank. As I've been reading I have found out at least 30% of the people in the MP are all cheaters anyway, so that makes the HIGH RANKING VETS OF WHAT: BEING THE BIGEST CHEATER RIGHT?

Kuma if you like I'll send you some tickets also, but I'll have to charge you the full price cause it will take a lot of training to get you up to par...
