What is the origin of the word "wizard"?

It comes from the ancient words "wys ars" .

At least that's what Terry Pratchett says on the subject . Anyone got other interesting theories?

The word "wizard" was derived from the word "wis", which is "wise" in old English. The word was initially used to indicate a wise man or woman and only later, it became connected to magic.
