I slowly stood up and looked Richard straight in the eye.

"As you will," I said before hopping on the horse.

My first thought was to object and to keep pace running with the beast. Which was challenging for one of my race yet fun all in the same. However, the more logical side instructed that I do as was asked so as to make myself appear more human than was in the truth. My black eyes easily found a suitable spot where I'd be able to ride comfortably behind Richard. After having climbed up I felt the need to ask.

"Richard....I wonder if you do not trust me since I simply choose to keep to myself unlike most of your comrades. Was that your reason for sending me south? That you do not trust me? I assure you my friend...I would hope that you'd trust your life with me...as much as I trust my life with you and your comrades."

For a second Richard felt remorse, that he had misjudged this man. But his second guesses were eliminated when he heard the words, 'I trust my life with you and your comrades.' Richard now had confirmed that his suspicions were correct. This man was not telling the truth. Just last time they spoke, Ike had said he did not trust any of the others and here he was saying he trusted them with his life.

"It was simply a mistake sending you south," said Richard. "I can assure you that I didn't intend to mislead you. Again, I'm sorry. However I'm glad to hear that you trust me with your life as do I. All adventurers must trust their fellow adventurers if they are to be successful."

"Exactly good sir. I must appologize for what I said earlier. While sitting there in thought I realized how foolish I was to state that, earlier, that I didn't trust your fellows. I realized that without the trust in friendship none could possibly get along. It has also come to my attention that if you can trust them, I should be able to as well, and for that my appologies if I may have sounded rude." I said to him in his response.

It had occured to me after what I said that I did, in fact, say earlier that day that I did not trust his allies and my blunder could have cost me dearly. I wondered just how humans thought when faced with potential traitors in their midst. As my thoughts wandered I thought back to an old friend of mine that, if I was fortunate, I'd see on this journey.

His plan had worked; no one had noticed the spellweaver suddenly fall silent, though Richard's suspicions ran high in his bid to find any traitors that might be lurking about. Why did the rogue expect to find something? There had never been a traitor before that had accompanied him to the Keep. Perhaps this distrust was a result of another of Richard's secrets, for not even the Guardian with whom he grappled knew what had happened before the rogue first visited this place. No doubt these adventurers each had their own rich pasts.

He looked with keen interest at the fire elemental that followed silently in the back of the group, watching each man closely for any sign of weakness that he could exploit. No one had paid him much heed, but the mage was bent on destroying each of the party for some unknown reason. This could prove useful later on, but there was always that chance the elemental would try to destroy Him as well. He would fail, most certainly, but these kinds of distractions had always spelled downfall for His kind in the end.

The dwarf rode merrily onward, and was the most jovial of the bunch by far. This was no doubt thanks in part to his insatiable love for inebriation, but it had no doubt also arisen from the fact that the dwarf had faced little hardship and knew not the perils of this road he traveled. Or perhaps hardship, to him, meant something different entirely. He was certainly decorated enough for the battle ahead.

Annuhalion and his wolfdog, Robin, also seemed quite merry, but a tugging worry slowly crept onto the elf's face, though only for an instant so as not to worry the others. Perhaps there was something he feared to lose, or maybe fear for his companion's life or some other great burden drove him to this fleeting despair. If this was true, it was a weakness that would cause him to fail before the Guardian's traps, for any hesitation within the Keep would certainly lead to peril.

In the front, near Richard, rode the fleet-footed Dan on his smaller than average horse. He had been to the Keep once before, but was the only to escape alive. Yet, this creature posed a threat nevertheless, for he had seen the traps, and they had nearly breached the treasure room before the guardian beast drove them away. Dan was quick, to be sure, and he had dodged every trap and studied the ones that had fallen. Now he sat, listening to Richard's stories, no doubt gaining more knowledge of what lie inside the depths of the Cauldron's Keep. He planned to venture further in this time around.

The ranger rode a little further back in the group, pondering the secret past that he so voraciously hid from all who wondered. Yet the Guardian was slowly prying this secret open, and He hoped that Isildur's past held some key to unravelling him. The symbol on the wall seemed familiar to Him, and the ranger had recognized it with awe, almost disbelief. The Guardian would have to watch this one very closely, in case some more clues that led into the past were revealed.

Ike stayed near Richard as the group traveled, no doubt gaining valuable insight into the rogue's plan to conquer the Keep. His ally would play the vital role of obstacle, turning one member of the party upon the other and dividing them. He was Richard's antithesis: someone who had visited the Keep, yet wished to preserve its secrets rather than unmask them. He would have to maintain his cover, though, at least until Richard had failed to keep his band together. Then Ike would be free to disappear. The Guardian had considered Ike's possible betrayal, but this notion was quickly dismissed. He had not the time to worry about such things.

Richard rode at the front, weaving tales of the Keep for all who would listen to hear. And some did listen; others did not, but the rogue would no doubt have told the stories even if everyone had ignored them. It was almost as if, by remembering, he was preparing for the trials ahead. But, then again, it may have been to distract him from the apprehension that slowly crept up inside of him, for he alone knew the true nature of the Keep. He knew there was much more than met the eye, something more terrible than anything that had come before. But the rogue was ready. At least he hoped.

And Mark rode along silently, for he was no longer himself.

The Guardian watched these things unravel, saw as far as He could into the hearts of those who approached. They were surprisingly united for men who had only just met, but this was because they all looked forward with a strange form of anxious excitement to what lay ahead. Perhaps if this optimistic view of the future were banished, they would begin to divide.

The Guardian stepped forward and summoned more creatures from out of the mist.

The journey was going quite smoothly. Spirits were high and Richard kept any uneasy silence at bay with stories of his adventures to the keep. Not a drop of rain had shown and there hadn't been any at all for close to a week. The ground was dry and perfect for travelling especially since they were trekking across grasslands, which could get extremely muddy and sloppy after a long storm.

The sun was set low in the sky off to their left as they came up to the crest of a small hill. At the bottom lay the edge of a wooded area. As they descended the hill, Richard noticed a strangely large amount of movement in the brush beneath the trees. Richard stopped short just a few steps down the hill.

"Does anyone see that movement in the brush just ahead?"

I heard it a while back, moving through the bushes alongside us. It has been with us now for at least the past five minutes. We know something is there, but proceed as if we don't. We will catch whatever it is by surprise, as hopefully it hasnt realised we have caught onto it...

There certainly was something in the bush. Annunhalion noticed it as did Isildur and Richard. But just what exactly. He gave a comand to Robin who slowed down his pace and walked at Annunhalion's side. He ran up to the two.

"Or perhaps we should strike at it. No hunter would give a warning to it's pray. Whatever it is it has give it self up and I say we exploit that misstake. If we let it be it may have time to change it's plan. What do you say?"

As the two talked it over Annunhalion allready pulled on his hood and covered his face in green-brown veil. He looked around and knew that he would have to remain vigilant

The party's reliance on Richard had put the rogue on the spot, and, for a brief moment, he weighed this decision. As an answer began to form on his lips, the beast leapt out of the bushes and attacked. The Guardian watched through its eyes as the creature lunged valiantly at Dan, yet missed as the small figure dodged to the left. Having lost its element of surprise, the monster stood on its haunches and snarled at Dan, determined to catch the prey it had singled out. Its master sighed and thought to himself what a foolish decision that would turn out to be for his little pet.

Mindless creature...should've gone for the slowest of them all, not the quickest.

Luckily, more lay crouched in the bushes, ready to strike should their brother fall. These were pack creatures, fiercely devoted to one another and very difficult to stop once they had all sprung into action. The beasts resembled wolves, yet their proportions were vastly different. Webbed ears stretched quite a ways back from where they connected to misshapen skulls, and they wore what seemed to be an eternal grin. They also were guarded from the back by three, very long tails, which seemed more at home on a reptile rather than a mammal such as themselves. Their eyes reflected a hunger that these beasts constantly longed to fill, and so they waited for that very chance. Their brother was fated to fall, for this sacrifice would fuel their anger even more.

The Guardian watched with a wily smile as the party surrounded the beast and prepared to strike it down.

Richard hopped off his horse as the creature charged out at Dan. He pulled out his two swords. The creature leapt at Dan who quickly dodged out of the way. Before the creature could regain its balance, a sword came slicing downward over the head of the wolf-like creature. The creature lain dead.

"Scorpion wolves!" Richard yelled. "I've only ever seen these at the keep. Their tails are poisonous. They spray at you like a skunk does. First it burns and then your skin goes numb. If you inhale it you pass out. If it gets in your eyes, you go blind. It does not last more than a few minutes, but it's more than enough time for these things to tear you apart."

Eerie howls called out from the bushes. The brush shook furiously as nearly two dozen beasts sprinted out to attack as their master had commanded.

One of the beasts leaped from the bushes, knocking Richard to the floor. But before he could sink his teeth in an arrow came flying into its back, knocking it off. Suprisingly the beast got up. Isildur put his bow away and drew his sword. Another of the creatures stopped in front of him, it seems that they were each choosing a target. As each member of the party drew arms and prepared for battle, at least two beasts drew close to each one.

Mvass threw a fire bolt at one of the wolf-scorpions. It wailed, burned, and died. The other lunged at him, but Mvass kicked it in the face. It was surprised at this, and Mvass took advantage of it. He ran at the beast, grabbed it by the throat, said a few words, and set it on fire, quickly running back.
"I took care of my two, guys! Should I handle the rest, or can you manage?" Mvass said.

after seeing Richard deal with his attacker, Dan knew that there would be more of these wolf like creatures following up the attack.

"Scorpion Wolves" Richard yelled, and Dan remembered the rest.

quite soon after Richards warning, Dan saw 2 dozen of the creatures rush out of the bushes. Dan looked around, and saw a few wolves had not yet picked a target so Dan targeted them. He drew a throwing knife from each of his boots and threw it at 2 wolves heads. one knife found its target with, right in the middle of the eyes and through the nose, the other knife however was less accurate, dipping and missing a wolf's front leg by centimetres.

Dan then quickly drew his short sword in his right hand and his dagger in his left. he could see two wolves on either side of him aswell aswell as one dead ahead, slowly advancing. he bent his knees slightly ready do jump and braced himself for the quick attack to come his way any second. . .

Richard gathered his feet and took a slash at the closest wolf. It leapt back and Richard missed. The second one came at his side and lounged in to bite his leg. He swung his sword down hard hitting right on the snout taking off a chunk of flesh. It yelped out in pain and retreated a couple steps. He stepped forward slashing at the wolf again, but he missed.

He turned to glance back at the first wolf which was now in midair just to his right. He quickly ducked and rolled backwards to dodge the wolf just in time. However upon his roll he swung his left sword upward slicing through the belly of the wolf. Unfortunately his sword was taken from his hand by the momentum of the beast. As he returned to a standing position, he held up his single sword in a defensive stance. He looked back to find the other wolf that had attacked him, but he saw Hathar raise his axe from a decapitated body in its place.

Richard looked around him and saw dead wolf bodies lying all around him. It seems the others made quick work of these foes. He turned back to his mates with a smile.

"Well done everyone seems to be o-" Richard stopped and looked at the fire mage lying on the ground. His legs were covered in blood and chewed up pretty badly. On top of him lay a burnt wolf carcass.

"I took care of my two, guys! Should I handle the rest, or can you manage?" Mvass said. Richard would have laughed had the fire mage not looked in such bad shape.

"Are you okay?" asked Richard.

"Yeah I'll be alright just get this wolf off me." Richard rolled the wolf off of Mvass and held out his hand to help him up. Once the mage was standing he told him he could heal those wounds up in a few minutes.

"Mark could you help me get out some herbs? We need to heal this before it bleeds to much." After Richard didn't get a response he turned to look at the mage who just stood there staring off into space blankly. His staff was strapped behind his back at the same angle he had seen it all day.

"Mark?" Richard asked again. The mage still did not respond. Something was definitely wrong with Mark. But he didn't have time to waste. He didn't bother waiting for a response and quickly took off his pack and rummaged through pulling out a large box with a latch on it. He opened it revealing dozens of tiny cloth pouches of various different colors. He grabbed a red one, a yellow one and a green one.

He snapped the top of the box shut and reached into his pack again this time removing a small bowl and setting it on the ground.

"I need you to take off your pants, please," he said to Mvassilev as he opened the red pouch. He reached in and pulled out a pinch of a light-grey powdery substance and dropped it into the bowl. He poured water into the bowl and stirred everything into a mixture. He added another pinch more from the red pouch and stirred up the mixture again. The liquid was now dark brown and looked as if it was gravy. He reached into the yellow pouch this time pulling out a red powder and added it to the mixture. He repeated the same thing with the green pouch and sprinkled bits of leaves onto the gravy.

He stirred up everything until it took on a pasty texture. The mixture was complete. He looked up at Mvass and saw a look of skeptism.

"Don't worry this won't hurt a bit. It should feel very soothing the second I apply it to your wound." Richard put his finger into the mixture pulling out a greenish-brown gob. He started at the back of the left calf muscle where the wound was the worst. His boots were now soaked in blood, which continued to ooze down his ankles.

The fire mage let out a sigh of relief as he spread the healing balm over his wounds. After just a minute all of the greenish brown paste was now applied generously to the legs of the mage.

"Just let that stuff dry before you put your pants and boots back on. Your wounds should be completely healed by morning."

Exceptional.

He had never seen a party fight as they had before, with such skill and a greater teamwork than that of his pets. It wasn't dedication to each other that drove these men, however, it was simply the result of an oath that each man believed to be greater than himself: that the task they had set out to accomplish was fulfilled, at any cost. This annoying persistence was the stuff of heroes, and ancient guardians always hated those types. He had to think of something, and fast.

Perhaps it was time to begin attacking their minds, as it had become apparent that no physical assault was worth the price He would have to pay for its success. Sure, there was always that, but He truly hoped that it would not take such measures to overcome his foe. Yes, a psychological assault was the best choice.

First, the Guardian would have to choose a target mind into which He could project, someone who would be susceptible to the voices in his head. He eventually settled on Isildur, for his mind was so troubled by his secrets that it would not be difficult to manipulate him. He began to move toward the dark plume of smoke which was the source of His power, and dove deep into Isildur's mind. Hopefully the past he so wished to escape would be his undoing, and also of his companions as well.

Annunhalion was sitting on a tree stump. Robin layed beside him. Robin didn't do any fighting. That was not his job, usualy and today was no exeption.
Annunhalion lost three arows. One was in the head of one of the weird creatures. The other two were used to pull down an especialy strong one. He wiped off the blood from his sword. He only used it once and that was to finish one of the dying creatures.

But who could do such thing? What kind of a twisted mind would mutilate the fiar wolves like this. And if Richard said he only saw them in Cauldron's Keep, Annunahlion knew there must be someone inside. Not something but someone. Someone guarding the place. Someone with enough power and enough of a twisted mind to preform such an experiment.

Whoever it was, Annunhalion knew that it would have to be someone strong and capable. Capable of doing anything. And he had to prepare himself for that...

Isildur looked around, dead wolves scatterd the floor. Isildur walked over to the wolve he shot with the arrow.

Isildur: No point in wasting arrows. This one can still be used.

As he reached down to grab the arrow Isildur noticed something. A strangre symbol was burning itself into the side of the beast. It was the same one from the Tavern bathroom...

Isildur: No... it cant be! Who keeps doing this?

It was something Isildur had not seen since his childhood, back when his father was still around. The symbol dissapeared almost as quickly as it appeared. Someone had realised who he was from his childhood, and probably wouldnt leave him alone until he has the same fate as his father...

Hathar was smiling, his eyes filling with rage and blood-thirst.

"Now that was mighty, ye gods." he spoke to the others, wiping his axe from fresh blood. "The journey has yet to show us somethin' fer sure!"

The crow that settled on the dwarf's left shoulder flew down on the dead body lying in front. Two arrows in the chest and an immense cut by the axe. The creature was lying still, as if he was sleeping. The bird picked the arrows up with his beak and brought them to Hathar.

"What are ye carryin'? Those are elv'n arrows, and I am no elf. Give 'em te Annunhalion or throw out! Maybe he will have use o' em."

The dwarf sat down on a stump, He felt a bruise on his cheek and a cut on his forehead, but he hoped it to heal itself fast. He dared not ask Richard for mixture, as he had enough job for himself, and took out his rune-belt. A set of dimly lit runes were hung on the belt. A simple human would say these are only pieces of rock with magical rune inscribed inside. It wasn't. Each of these runes contained magical energy, a magical shadowy aura surrounded them and the color of the inscription shifted its color like a rainbow.

He took out a rune and closed his eyes. His body felt warmer and warmer with each moment, he could feel the wounds disappear...

The rune went blank and the dim light evaporated. He laughed and put it back on his belt...

"If that was the start, I wond'r, what will be the end..." he sighed. "May the pow'r o' the dwarv'n mines o' Castador and the dwarv'n gods help us!"

I shouldn't say that what I did when the scorpion-wolves came out of the brush was right, but I didn't want them to recognize me. As soon as they appeared I leapt up into the nearest tree and hid until they had slaughtered all of them. Dropping down quickly and driving two scimitars straight into the body of one so as to coat them with blood to make it appear as though I had fought I noticed a man I hadn't been introduced to looking at me queerly.

"I thought I saw it twitch" I explained calmly. "No need to have it spraying everyone in it's last gasping breath, correct?"

The man didn't respond, simply choosing to walk back to the rest of the troupe. I followed, overhearing the dwarven one praising his dwarven gods for "saving" us. Or so it seemed to me. I merely looked at the ground and muttered curses in my head against his gods and asked for the blessing of my Drow goddess upon me and my own. Hoping she'd speed the journey of the dead to the land of the Dead.
