Are either of you running the PC with "user-account" control settings on high?

I'm not, my setting is at low because I have good virus protection and I also only allow internet communication when I browse or mail.

You might try this if you're not running this idle environment already;
a.right-click the internet-access icon in your system tray.
b. Select...Open network
c. On the upper left...change adapter settings
d. select your network(should be blue)
e. above on the blue organize taskbar, the first action is "Disable this network device" Click, now you will see the system tray internet-icon turn orange. Meaning internet access is available but not connectede. Note: Losing your hardware connection would make a red-X there instead.

When you're ready to browse again, repeat the steps and enable.

Markkur, wouldn't that be (physically) connected (to your internet gateway) but not available (to use)?

Just a note, 'auto-saves' aren't saved until you end the turn, rather than when you start them but they are saved.
What I think you referring to is just manual saves (or all saves) but they do in fact save as soon as you tell them to. I know there are some games here and there (and applied preferences/settings/options in some programs/changes to playlists)that work that way, such as foobar2000 requiring that you close it in order to remember your (loaded tab) playlist changes, meaning that a program or system crash will wipe your supposedly saved changes.

I'll post again if I think of any further thoughts that might help.

Well UAC is on low as well..Settings are maxed with HW cursor enabled.

Tried a multiplayer map I got on the net, huge, plenty of details. We have a winner - game crashes after the 1st turn.

I'm very very sad

Contacted ubi support, but no idea if they'll respond some day, game is old after all.

I guess UBIs worth a shot.

<imo>Your last trial sounds like it could be hardware. Have you did all the basics? Chips well-seated, run memory test etc.

I'll keep thinking on it too and Fyi,(doubt strongly it would matter)my screen is set to 1920x1080 and I'm running Quantomas' A.I. and no other mods.

Hmmm, one more thought. Have you tried without any maps in your maps folder except the one you're wanting to play? A defective map sitting in that folder might cause problems.

Edit= I came across a thread about XP crashing the same ways. Here's the link...see 8th post.

The map I want to play atm (only one in the folder) is really heavy, and people on the download site have been reporting same problems ( frequent crashes ). My friend has no problems with it though, BUT he's on win 7 32 bit.

RMG maps crash as well though, just takes longer, so for test purposes it's easier to try and make this one work.

Both values in user_a2 file are already at 0. Thanks for the link btw

I guess I ll try the memory tests and disabling the onboard sound card (have to find my old soundblaster 24bit now )

I'll do another extensive test tomorrow, will tell you how it goes.

Thanks for the help!

Right so - memory is stable, changing sound cards does nothing...

Is it possible that for some reason only this map causes problems? I've never seen this before, but I'm out of ideas now...

The map is here, and as you can see people report crashes as well.

Maybe one of you guys with a x64 system could quickly test it?

I have it and played it some, quite a while ago. I'll load it tomorrow and check out the save issue, etc. on my Win 7 64, Quad. Btw, I saw no scripts listed so that's good.

I have to tell you though, I wouldn't bother if I didn't have Q's A.I. I have a huge map of my own with lots of work and it would not run very well at all using the old A.I.

This is one of my favorite maps made by another and I remember that my old PC was not able to run this map very well so I gave up.

Two things that I will mention that could be very problematic for some machines;

The map size is Huge w 8 players and if you're playing with the normal A.I. turns will become very long.

In addition, I make maps and my experience has been whenever I start pushing the map up in height to about 60 @ Z-heighth (default upstairs is 2) performance takes a hit. This map has snowy-places @ 80. And if there is fog around it really slows down.

It took me a bit to realize that most "enjoyed" H5 maps were limited to Large or Normal". <imo> Q's A.I. would have made a big difference in the community-mapping-efforts a few years ago and will in the future.

Hi there, this is my fix might be useful to someone who had problems with this game (mainly with blurry low resolution textures at startup or randomly during playing, and possibly other problems like crashes, stutters) This problem can usually be on 64-bit systems with 4 GB or more of RAM, when dedicated video memory is more than 2 GB.

Unzip and copy d3d9.dll to BIN game folder, where the H5_Game.exe file.

Oook, I quickly tested your fix and I managed to load the autosave that crashed before!

I'll test that tomorrow, but it's already a progress Thanks a lot!

Could you explain what this fix does exactly please?

The game engine is not properly detect available video memory, if the total size >2GB (video card memory + available system memory for textures). This simple fix intercepts one direct3d function, which reports the amount of available video memory, and replaces the value if it is greater than 2GB.
I'm just looking for a solution of this problem over the internet, and found a way. With the information from the internet and some edits in these examples and source codes (thanks to the author), compiled this d3d9.dll fix.

Holy Bananas man!  You rock!

I've been puzzling over this for six months about why in the world the textures in my game have gone low res when all I did was upgrade my RAM to 8GB.

Now I just need to figure out why the textures won't work in Descent 3 on my wife's computer... I wonder if it is a related issue.

That was me! (Some others may have had some similar problems though)
Wow! That would make a lot of sense, I think it (the glitch occuring) might have coincided with my RAM amount increasing from 2GB tro 4GB some time ago, after one had continually not worked in dual channel mode and was sometimes not being picked up (but I didn't notice it for a while). Maybe the troubles started right after I made sure the RAM was correctly slooted in! (I just recently upgraded to a total of 12GB though ^_^)

I look forward to trying this when I get home from work. It sounds like it will so I hope I'm not getting my hopes up for a fix that will just *happen* to not work for me! XD

(Double posting because editing doesn't seem right here; doesn't affect post count anyway)

Brilliant!
It clearly fixes it! I can rename the file and try again and see the glitch instantly start happening again, so I assume d3d9 using programs always check for an updated file within one specific folder (dependant on the application code, I expect) and this simply overrides the one that would otherwise be used.
Very much appreciated, Icharus! It just goes to show that it is worth posting any problems in forums even if a community has greatly diminished in recent years, because someone else out there might have or have had the same troubles and be able help out.

Thank you Icharus!

Fyi, your fix also worked to correct the age old map editor blur problem as well. The work-around was always load a second map. Two trials and both times the first map was clear...great work.

QP

Btw, You should post the fix at CH as well. There are some players there too and I don't think they should miss your effort.

Cheers

Ah of course, my word, the map editor one was even more annoying! How relieving to have that fixed!

I don't suppose anyone has any utilities that allow background processing? I'd like to Alt+tab out while waiting for it to process AI turns but there's no check-box to enable or disable background processing. Are there any settings in an .INI (or other) files that people are aware of?

I just play the game in windowed mode.  That lets alt-tab work.  That way I can keep an eye on the game manual and the skill wheel too.  I suspect you knew that though...

I know that you can (I do often use Windowed Mode too), my annoyance is that it doesn't process turns (AI player turns or enemy units in battle) when the program is not in focus.
