I was being chased.  An infernal loop. My naked feet were slowed as the slosh of khaki mud threatened to swallow them, a quagmire of doubt and fear preventing my escape. But who was in pursuit?

I saw a pile of broken, decapitated dolls and knew they held the answer to my confusion.  The figure behind me was gaining momentum.  I had to protect the dolls, he mustn’t find them…

T’chink-ka-clink

The sound of clashing metal broke through the sky, it was calling me from another world…

Hound's car pulled into a nondescript house in boring Metrograde suburbia.

A 'safe' house.

"Let's check it out." Hound said.

Hound and Sky walk down the garden path into the house, to find it expensive and extravagant inside.

"I guess crime does pay." Sky said as they walked in. A man wearing jeans and a tucked-in, messy tuxedo shirt stood up.
"Hound! About time you showed up, just in time too. We're about to take one out." The man said.
"What's this guy for?"
"Ah, he couldn't pay up."
"Making the phone call?" Hound asked. Sky coughed. "Oh ****, Gianni, this is Blair, but you'll know him as Skyray, the best you'll ever meet. Sky, this is Gi, you owe him your freedom as you'll be staying here."
"So I finally meet him." Gianni said, putting his hand out.
"You don't mind do you? I've got into a lot of **** lately. So who do you have to kill to get a place like this?" Sky asked as they sat down on the chairs around the table.

Gianni nodded to a manservant, who brought out drinks for all of them.
Two men in black outside the back window dragged a bloodied captive into the courtyard in clear view, with his hands tied and a bag over his head.

"You have to deal alot of meth, and you have to kill anyone who gets in your way." Gianni grinned. "Please, drink, it's good"
Sky looked out the window. They pulled the bag off the man's head to reveal his face; bloody, beaten and badly bruised.
"So you deal dolls?" Sky asked.
A tear ran down the man's face. One of the men in a back suit lined up a pistol with the man's bleeding face.
"Gi doesn't deal the dolls, he runs the ****ing doll business. This is it, you're looking at him." Hound said, and lit up a cigarette. "Nice guy though."
With that, the gun fired.

A clammy hand on my arm and the tight prick of a needle roused me.  A trogdor feeling washed over me as I opened my eyes and struggled to convince the room to stop its perpetual swirl.  I slammed my lids shut, relaxed my arm, and nudged at my memory banks.  Why was I here?

JOLT

A collision, sirens…

My car!

Where was it now?… I had to get back to work, there was so much to do.

It wasn't often that I had the chance to speak to my boss, Peter. He was usually busy with one case or another. He was never mean to me or gave me a hard time, just never payed much attention to me. This was the first time he had called me into his office in months. For what reason I had no clue.

"Please sit down," he told me gesturing to the seat. The soft leather was very comfortable. He sat forward in his chair and picked up a pen holding it in his right hand as if he was going to start writing. He was clearly in thought trying to choose the best words to say what he wanted. Somehow he seemed a bit unhappy with the news he was about to tell me. He couldn't be letting me go. Could he? No there's no reason, perhaps it was about my partner.

"As you know last month among a few others. Detective John Brown retired. And so we needed someone to fill his shoes. Well it seems that Chief Stanwood decided that you had done such a fine job with your field work, that he wanted you to be promoted to Central Investigation. You'll be doing a decent amount of paperwork, but you'll still get to work in the field quite a bit." Peter stood up in his chair and held out his hand. Realizing the pen was still in it, he pulled it back to place the pen on his desk and offered it again. Quickly I rose to my feet. I tried to say something, but for the most part I was speechless.

"Congratulations," he said with a smile. Though I couldn't help but think it was forced somehow. Perhaps he was going to miss having me on his crew. He did say I had done a fine job in the field. I shook his hand and said thank you before I headed for the door.

"Oh. One other thing, John." I turned around and took a couple steps back toward his desk. Peter was now seated. "Why don't you take the rest of the day off. Go have a good time."

My weekend was about to start and my head, which had been throbbing for days, was about to get a break. Between a superior that invited me to a threesome gathering just to tell me that she only wanted me there; to a psycho phone stocker that obviously needs to talk about his potty training days with someone licensed, I was more than happy to see Saturday.

My green pea pinto and I are going out of town today to wash the stink of the city off. The strife of life has gotten to me and I have had all I could handle of bad smelling, under cooked, and over priced diner grub. I was going to a wine bar somewhere over looking a calming body of water. I skipped out me door with my skin pealed back on my face in a joyous form. I approached my car and all its loneliness and that’s when I noticed it; a letter stuck to my cracked windshield. I cautiously glanced around me and then peeled off the letter.
______________________________________________________________________
To Whom It May Concern:
This is not my first attempt at writing this and if I feel you are not minding me I will take the proper steps to insure the possession of your body. Stop looking around, I don’t want you dead, I just want your paralysis to be about ninety percent so I can control everything about you but your thoughts. I listen to you at the diner and it’s your thoughts that I’m in love with; ok and your body. If you are reading this you are probably getting ready to hop in the antique you drive. I want you to come and meet me; don’t be concerned, I truly have become a fan.
You will be receiving a text message soon and I want you to follow the direction exact. God I can almost smell you now and feel your soft skin on mine. See you soon and remember that we all have fans in our lives but only a few really ever get to be with there’s.

Yours soon,

The warmth of the air and my instant shock had taken over and I fell straight back on the road. When I awoke gentlemen was standing over me holding his shirt and waving it at my face.  “Are you ok?” I sat up and he knelt down and started rubbing my wet back. “I don’t know, I think I need to go lie down in my apartment.” He helped me up and brought me to my place. I wasn’t going to let him in but I felt no danger with him.

“How long was I out?” “ You were out for a few minutes and even though I thought taking my shirt off would spark something with you, you ignored my advances.” He said with a flirty grin. “Well pardon me if my idling sex drive is stomped out while I lay dieing in the middle of the road.” “Thank you for your help but I think that I need to go to bed.” “Can I have your number so that maybe we could have coffee sometime?” I spat out my number to him without a second thought as he franticly retrieved his cell phone.

I paced my apartment afraid to leave and then balled up in the corner with racing thoughts of being mutilated. My text message sounded and all I could do was stare at it from across the room. Well this was a great start to my weekend and at this point I had decided to purchase a gun. A damn big gun too…

It was the middle of the night. Blair had been hiding out at Gianni's place for a while now, but he had lost his sense of time, his brain numbed.
It was pouring outside. Blair was half asleep in his bed, half awake listening to the dull static the rainfall made outside his window.
There were quiet voices out in the living room, Blair wasn't listening, he was only half concious.

Then he heard a door swing open, and that all changed.

With the slamming of the door Blair was wide awake, and the chatter turned to yelling.

"Phoebe, where the hell have you been?"

Blair sat up from bed, grabbed the bottle of pills on the side of the table, and popped two or three. His eyes flared, his brain ached. And he was alive.

"How many times do I have to tell you? Were you with that boy again?" Gianni yelled.

Sky got out of the bed and threw a shirt on to see what was happening.
He was blinded by the light momentarily as he entered the room, but his pupils contracted to reveal the chaotic scene. There were three other men sitting around the table in what seemed like a disrupted poker game, and a stunning young women had just walked in the front door, soaked from the rain and obviously blind drunk. Which may explain Gianni's yelling.

"Dad, why the **** do you care? I'm old enough now!" The girl said, stumbling into the room, distraught.

"Did that little **** knock you up?" Gianni grabbed her, and slapped her hard across the face. "You NEVER talk to me like that! No one talks to me like that, you *****! You're my daughter!" He slapped her again, and her nose began bleeding, her face becoming a miserable mixture of tears, blood and hair.

"Are you going to kill me? Are you?" She cried, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Shut up!" Gianni cried, shaking her violently. "Shut up, shut up!" He turned around to the other men. "Get the **** out." He pointed to the door.

The girl, Phoebe, turned to look at Sky. Her eyes were deep, and beautiful. But there was something more in her expression. Something knowing. She began to mouth something to him in desperation.
Gianni interrupted with another cruel slap to the face.

Sky stepped out from the doorway and pushed Gianni from her.
"Stop this, now. I need to talk to your daughter."
"Stay out of this, I housed you, protected you, don't make me regret it."
"Your daughter's life may be in danger." Sky turned to Phoebe. "I think I've seen you before... does the name Arora mean anything to you?" He asked. Gianni let her go as she got a hold of herself.
"It wasn't me.." She said, averting her gaze suddenly.
"What? Who killed my family?!"
"I said it wasn't me! He's responsible!" The girl pointed at her father. "Him and his ****ing business! I never wanted to get involved! Find the woman-" Blair got heated.
"What woman?"
"The woman in the crash!" She screamed.

Silence reigned.
Phoebe put her hands behind her head and caught her breath. Gianni was speechless.
She put her hands down and reached into her pocket, taking out a cigarrette. Her hands were covered in blood. In fact, blood was strewn across the back of her head. She lit up.

"She knows what happened, not me. It's the dolls."

The blood wasn't only from her father's beatings. This girl wasn't at any ordinary party.

"Where the hell have you been, anyway?" Sky asked.

She was the lead. He was involved now, and he was in deep.
He had to go.

blech
I was staring at the faded wall wondering who started the rumour that pastels were the best pallet for hospital patients when my boss entered, an impressive bunch of gladioli in hand.    I sat up in the bed, shifted a tray of half eaten food to my side, and faced my ticket out of here.

“Penny…” the awkwardness of his gait suggested there was more on his mind than his distaste for public wards.
“Rodger, I’ve gotta get out of here, I’m going insane.”  His answer was a relieved smile and his arm, extended with flowers, retracted a little as he looked around the room.
“Are you ready already?”
“Uhuh.”  I slipped from the cot.  “I’ve just got to find where the hell they put my clothes…” He opened a draw at my bedside.  “Thanks… can you give me a ride?”
“I’ll be out in the foyer, are you sure they’ll let you go?”
“I’m going.  I’ll be right out.”

* * *

I saw the wreck of my car in the parking lot and froze momentarily.  It really was a wreck.
“Fran’s waiting for me you know, I can’t stay long.”
“Of course.” of course….  “Let me out by the car, I’ll take it from here.”  I met his eyes and they held for a long minute before he pulled up beside the bent metallic pile.  I opened the door, gathered the flowers in my fist, and thanked him once again.  His eyes shifted downward before a forced smile bid me farewell.
“See ya!”

The keys leapt from my purse and into my palm as if it were a magnet.  I slid my hand across the boot – not too much damage here.  The key turned no worries, and the boot popped with a strangled clank.

They were still there.

And they were intact.

For the first time in days my shoulders relaxed.  I checked my watch – the glass was cracked but the hands still beat a steady rhythm.  I had two hours to get ready for the concert.  Time enough to make an impact, and time enough to prepare for the night of my

February.

The hot sun pierced my face as it reflected off my window; the sounds of traffic were dulled. I was wrapped in fetal position with a sweaty wad of paper in one hand and an empty vodka bottle perched on my arm. The creepy letter, the man who saved my limp body from being impaled by on coming traffic, and a damn vodka hangover, Sundays had never been so bright.

I drug my body to the shower and let the hot water just scaled my skin as I closed my eyes. I had forgotten to pry the letter from my hands and the subtle blue ink run down my inner thigh. I could not figure out who would want to prey on a girl with a grand waitress position and a Pinto. That guy, his smell that soaked his white tee shirt that he waved over me in such a gentle manner to awaken me. He was my happy place for a moment as I open my legs and let the hot water wash my stress away with thoughts of maybe meeting him again.

I still had plans to go to a wine bar somewhere out of Metrograde and relax while over looking some polluted filled waves. The ocean was not far off and if the city was at its very still point in the night, you could stretch your imagination and roost upon the paint chipped window ceil and hear it. It was faint and lonely but it was there.

The sun was warm today and I required little clothing for my trip. I loved summer for this reason, I had always been more comfortable wearing shear flowing clothes that just caressed my curves and allowed for that slight breeze to brush over me. My flip-flops echoed in the stair well as I skipped down to my car.

Excited to get out of this smogged over city and smell some clean air I was giddy to leave it behind if only for a day. I had my cell phone but for the sake of my sanity I had it shut off. I was praying that everything yesterday was just a bad dream or some fluke. My mind kept thinking of the male that waved his sweaty shirt over me.

I show up at the wine bar in time for some fine red grapes to coat my tummy. “Mam are you here alone or waiting for someone?” “ Here with my thoughts, does that count for anything?” The part that I was sitting at was outside facing the rushing oceans waves that caressed the rocks. Glancing over the top of my glass there was a bulletin posted on the wall. “Green Day playing tonight at the Ocean Side outdoor theater plaza.” You have got to be kidding these guys are great, can’t think of a better time to kick some Green Day.

I paid my bill and headed off to get me some tickets and a cold beer. Upon arriving in the parking lot I started to think about my “hero” and what he was doing. So on a whim I called him and invited him to the show with me. “ Hey stud this is “Miss completely embarrassed” and I was wondering if you would care to join me?” In the softest voice he replied, “I thought that you would never ask and when would you like for me to join you?” I paused with a grin smeared across my face, “ Well I’m here now, you could come now and we could have a drink.” “ See you soon, very soon and what will you be wearing?” “You want to know for personal pleasure or so you can spot me?” He laughed a quiet soft laugh and replied, “Personal pleasure Hun.”

I walked back to my car and with no more than a minute to spare a blue car pulled up. There is no way that is him, but the silhouette spoke otherwise to me. It was at least a half hour drive to here. How did he get here so fast? My heart dropped at the thought of him already being here, I got nervous and a bit sick to my stomach. I approached the car with caution and glee but I could not see because the sun was piercing off the windshield. I turned my phone on to call and make sure it was him, when my text message went off. **** it was the freak again; WTH was it with this guy?
