I tested H4 on 3 different comps.. results inside..

I tested HoMM4 on 3 different comps to determine playability. Here are the results. Note that I have used medium sized map to conduct these tests.

My own computer:

P4 1.8 Ghz
512 DDR ram
geforce 3 ti500 64 mg graphics
40 GB 7200 RPM HD
windows XP

Results:

Runs flawlessly with no slowdowns at all, even in max res with all graphic options on.

My dad's old computer:

PIII 500
128 SD-RAM
voodoo 3 16 mg card
20 GB hard drive
win 98

Results

Runs quite well, you might want to tune down the res though. Combat a bit choppy at times. Sometimes freezes for a few seconds when entering/exiting combat. Great performance on adventure map.

My friend's super crappy comp:

celeron (uuh!!) 667 Mhz
64 Mg RAM
4 mg video
8 Gb HD
win 98

Results:

Slow, but playable. In 800x600 res with every option off, the game is quite decent. Get slower later on but still very playable. You might want to stay away from XL maps though (BTW, me and my friend made a bet. If it ran on his comp I would lend it to him for a week, so now I don't have Heroes 4 at all )

Conclusion:

Heroes IV is playable on a wide variety of machines, the key seems to be processor power, if you have enough you can still play it decently with low ram.

I hope this helped people who are still hesitating to buy H4 because they are unsure whether it will run on their machines.

Edit: On the third computer (the worst one), the music had to be completely turned off.

I have a fast computer (P4 1.5, 128 MB RAM, 64MB Gf2 D, win98), yet I can't find a way to prevent the music from skipping.  Any suggestions?

Actually

It is a very common problem for people with all kinds of comps both low and high. I believe its not a sys req. issue. I think its s programming issue. I think it should be fixed in the next patch.

Thanks! Your dads comp is almost identical to mine and I wondered if I should buy it. I have a better 3d card but homm isn't 3d so...

Well I am not sure about what was said here.
Even though Homm IV isn't a first person shoot em up
it still requires a good graphic card to run smoothly..
If u got a P III 500 with a Geforce 3 TI 500 or something like that the game will run perfectly.
But with a Vodoo 3 16MB it will definetly not !
Not so much computer power as graphic card !

My result

I run h4 in my notebook: Compaq Evo N160

CPU: 1 GHz
128 SD-RAM (but only 126 usable)
20 G hard-disk
forget what display card.

Though when installing, it's said my ram is not enough (min. 128), I install anyway. With max resolution and everything on, game runs ok. But music play discontinuously and my machine crashes several times especially during entering and after a battle. Anyway, I think RAM do have an effect.

Well yeah of course ram has something to do with the performance of the game.
There are a lot of things moving at once....
That reguires some MB of ram...
But as long as your CPU is better than 500
the only thing that really matters,
if u got 128 MB ram or more of course,
is the graphics card !

My system (I have no idea if this is any good or not, so there! )

Wndows XP Professional Plus
ATAPI CD-ROM MAX 52X
NVIDA GeForce 2 display MX/MX400
CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device
AMD Duron(tm) Processor
700 MHz
128 MB RAM

Computer is an ATAPI Uniprocessor PC

Game runs pretty well, with the occasional 'pause' during combat or travel, but these are very occasional.  Sound is choppy on vids, although occasionally behaves itself.  Sometimes it loops, I think, but I have no comparison of the non-looped music, so I can't tell...

Screen resolution is on default setting, as don't dare change it with my mother in the same house (computers melt in her meer proximity)!

Everything seems a bit.. small, though.  Cursor is fine, graphics are sharp, colours are correct.  However.. quitting can take a while (up to 15 secs)

1800 AthlonXP+ (approx 1.5Ghz)
256 DDR RAM
Hercules Prophet GeForce 2 MMX 32 RAM
with lastest Nvidia drivers and DirectX 8.1
Windows 2000 with all programs and services shut down
on board CMedia sound
ASUS 52X CDROM

The game crashes ALOT!  I get alot of memory errors.  For example when I kill a black dragon, the game often crashes ?!?  For me the game is basically unplayable, until they put out a patch to fix these issues.

Some replies

To Snogard

Yes this system is fine, just don't run it on highest settings.

To everyone having problems:

Did you defrag? Hard Disk scan?

Most important: MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE DOWN ALL OTHER PROGRAMMES, they take up RAM and CPU power especially anti virus checkers. Even with more than enough resources you need to do this, because another application running may conflict with H4 causing a system crash.

As I've said before: With properly configured system, you can run H4 on lowest settings with a decent celeron/pentium and 64-128 RAM.

K6-2 450Mhz
128 mb Ram
W2K

Game runs fine in 1024*768 with animations off on the adventure screen though it will occasionally stall for about 5 secs.
