Building the town: what would you chose?
There is some info on the towns. To be exact that how much of money and resources you need to build the town up from the ground.

How did you get those numbers? I tried making a spreadsheet like this a while back, and the whole either/or thing for the higher level creature dwellings made a mess of it. You can really only work from basics (like the Tavern, which is always 500 gold and 2 wood if not prebuilt) and general rules (allied magic add-ons to the Mage Guild generally cost 2500 gold and 2 units of the allied town's specialty resource). Beyond that, it ges complicated, especially with pre-reqs for high level dwellings.

i'd go for haven
because you only have to stack up on 2 valuable recources. even if you take the more expensive path (which in my opinion is crusader/angel).

Look, if this is another "which town is best" thread, then I think we can just agree to disagree. Personally, I like stronghold and preserve. And yes, academy sucks royally.

Academy sucks royally? Right... It may be one of the harder towns to play with, but I'd like to see an equally expensive preserve army take my academy town any day of the week. Even a few titans on those archery towers will do amounts of long range damage unmatched in the game. Dragon golems on the other hand are amazeing with their negate fs/fs. Genies can duplicate your best stack in a matter of turns or deal massive (no retal) ice damage, not to forget their song of peace or slow. Gold golems are undoubtably the most reliable level 2 creatures in the game. Magi are vulnerable but powerful nonetheless. Don't underestimate those little halflings as well.
Everyone has his/her favorite town, usually the town you're best with. For me that's the necropolis. But none of the towns is worse than the others. Some just do better in certain situations than others, that's all.
@HALT: Nice initiative HALT, good to see those numbers all together so that we might make comparisons, the manual was lacking this.

Academy is one of the best towns, but sometimes easy to handle. To counter genies you need to develop good magic resistance heroes (either combat heroes or damage spell casters) and at least one of them should have dispell or cancelation to dispell ilusions. Now what can genies do against that - can't cast bolt (resistance), their ilusions will be dispelled, as fighters they suck. Black dragons are the genies nightmare as they cant do anything against them.
Also, academy troops are so slow for initial exploration.

I just played a few hotseats/sp's with Life as my main dinner and it was on JB map's ( you allways got an extra tavern next to town ) ( can't jb win without ? J/K ) but Life is kinda powerful! ( and I was a Fortress woman in h3 , well still is ) but I think wamps are good, efreets, genies. But Life...still me fav. ..........so far good thread Halt ( Zdrovo Halt )

I still don't think you can just plop all the numbers together and get an accurate picture of town building costs. Take the Academy, for instance. You can build a full Academy using only 17 gems by going Gold Golems/Nagas/Dragon Golems. That route is going to cost you 121 ore. On the other hand, the maximum number of gems you can spend building an Academy is 46, in which case you will only have to dole out 93 ore. Obviously, most players will be somewhere in the middle of those ranges. But there is no possible way you can ever spend a full 137 ore or 50 gems building one Academy. Either you spend the 16 ore to build Titans or the 30 ore to build Dragon Golems. Putting them together double-counts 16 ores, just as it double-counts 4 gems.
Anyway...that's my little soapbox. Please continue the analysis now.
