If you could only have one spell...
What would it be and why?
If I could only have one spell it would have to be town portal. I believe that this is the most useful spell in the game. It enables you to quickly reload creatures and get back into action. If one side has portal and the other doesn't it leads to an enevitable victory. If offered earth magic in the game I will always take it on the off chance that portal becomes available.
My favorite way to use the portal is by taking towns near the front lines then flipping back to all of my towns and reenforcing a possible depleted superhero.
Is there a better spell out there?

Hmmm
I'm not sure if it is better, but i would like Armageddon. It's the most powerful spell in the game, and it would do well taking out really strong opponents.

Those are both powerful spells. But I would have to say the spell that I would have over any other is slow. Get one lvl 7 and mass slow. It's amazing what you can do with it. I probably use it more than any other spell, dd being the exception to the rule of course.

Yeah Town Portal Is Great!
Yeah oldtimer I gotta agree with you fully there. Town portal is the most useful spell in the game for all the reasons that you just said.
Its also great for the defence of your castles. When you have expert Earth Magic and hence Expert Town Portal you can portal to whatever town needs defending straight away with your main hero. This is great when playing against multiple computer opponents and you have a lot of towns to defend against medium sized AI Armies.

I agree
Town Portal is the the best spell in the game but only if you have advanced earth magic, with basic or no earth magic town portal is almost useless.

...not There are situations when it´s more convenient to have other spells, but overall town portal IS the best choice (and if you´re out for any balance breaking spells this is your prime candidate). Be it for the most part a defensive spell, it still enables extra fast reinforcing (with at least advanced earth magic naturally) which makes it better than even dimension door (in my humble opinion ). Some say good defence is a key to victory So, yes I agree with you.

I would take town portal too and for comabt slow
One comment, I play necro a lot and HATE it when I build mage guild level 4 and eagerly look what spells I got and and very often I dont have townportal but resurrect!!!!
I hate it so much!! Once it happened like 4 or 5 times in one game!
Hopefully in heroes 4 necro wont get resurrect.
One thought I had yesterday. It owuld be cool if we could buy (cool) spells to a roaming mechant wizard on the map or maybe a mage guild or something. Thebn for let's say 50,000 gold you could buy townportal.
What do you think?

Dimension door for sure. Town portal is for lazy creature-stackers But on large maps with strong computers or human players (and I talking about Impossible difficulty here) you'll never get a chance to approach enemy castle for sudden attack. Dimension is the only way...

I cannot say what is the best spell cause everyone thinks diffrent due to their experience. But my favourite is also TOWN PORTAL with (of course) Expert Earth.
But I have a question...Do you know existing in any HOMM 3 a spell called FEAR ? I have once encountered (as a reward)in a edited map after conquerin a piramid but I didn't have the Expert Wisdom to learn it...

since i am always an expert in ALL magic schools I'd go with Town Portal as well... you fight, you reload, you fight again... what can be better? if you own a Dungeon this spell can be quite usefull... think if you own all town types... you portal yourself around pick up the creature of your choice and throw yourself back in the battle...

Usefull spell but...
And that but is: It would be very difficoult to get anywhere in HOMM without no more than one spell...town portal is also a favorite of mine, but i wouldn´t wanna be left with only that!
Another simply fabulous spell is dimention door, no escape for an nearby enemy in the black shroud!
Beserk is quite useful when battling 100 farie dragons... but not without a ressurection spell

About fear, I never heard of it in Heroes 3, but I've heard it's going to be the special ability of the bone dragon.

I'll take a different approach...
Now, assuming that both I AND my opponent were restricted to one single spell, then I would pick:
Dungeon: Bless. (Great for many of the units, assuming I could get Water Magic) Second choice Armageddon because of the Dragons.
Inferno: Ressurrection (to conserve hitpoints), second pick: Armageddon (Because of Efreet).
Castle: 1. Prayer (works great for these units). 2. Clone.
Fortress: Shield (to reduce damage; most of the units are hand to hand), second pick Counterstrike (great on Hydras).
Stronghold: 1. Ressurrection, 2. Prayer.
Rampart: 1. Prayer. 2. Berserk.
Conflux: 1. Bless. 2. Armageddon.
Necropolis: 1. Animate Dead 2. Implosion.
Tower: 1. Prayer, 2. Slow. (So the enemy can't close in on my shooters.)
Why I'm not picking TP? It won't help me in combat. The spell is a defensive one, and allows you to pool your troops on one hero. However, once we meet on the field of combat.. You're a sitting duck for my spells.

Are you sure?! A piramid does get you a fifth level spell, but fear is not a spell. Or at least I´ve never seen it or heard of it. To my knowledge it´s the specialty that Azures have - makes your units freeze in combat (you lose turn)...

By towns I think...
Overall I would have to say DD is the best spell. T-portal is great also, but for really quick strikes, DD is the best. You can always use chain with DD and almost get the same effect as T-portal, and if your hero has enough mana it's not important to refuel or even with DD you can refuel in a mana vortex or magic spring etc and get 2x mana while you travel to new towns. If you have both DD and t-portal wyou will beat even armeggeddon. You can run around forever ahead of their hero and take his towns and units every week eventually getting enough fire magic immune units to beat his spell. Otherwise...
Inferno- DD, Resurect, Prayer, Haste, T-portal, Implosion, Armeggedon, Chain Lightening.
Fortress- DD, Resurect, Clone, Prayer, Haste, Bless, Teleport.
Dungeon- DD, T-portal, Armeggedon, Chain Lightening, Slow, Sorrow, Weakness, Meteor, Lightening.
Castle- DD, t-portal, Clone, Prayer, Haste, Slow, Chain Lightening, Meteor.
Wizard- DD, T-portal,Prayer, Implosion, Resurrect, Clone, Haste, Beserk, Blind, Slow, Chain Lightening.
Stronghold- DD, T-portal, Prayer, Clone, Haste, Teleport, Resurrect, Shield, Bless.
Rampart- DD, T-portal, Chain Lightening, Prayer, Clone, Implosion, Haste, Teleport, Blind, Slow, Bless.
Necropolis- Animate Dead, T-portal, DD, Clone, Haste, Teleport, Antimagic, Chain Lightening, Armeggedon, Implosion.
In that order for each town also... for varying reasons. Towns with many archers benefit more from slow, blind, beserk etc, while Stronghold and Fortress need to engage quick. Also the spells depend alot on the hero; a hero with only 6 spellpower, and 50 mana can't be casting Implosion or Resurrect alot, better to cast prayer, shield, haste etc.
