OWS and the We Are The 99% movements

Good evening everyone,

What started as Occupy Wall Street is now a series of events moving around the US, and now, around the world. Here in Melbourne we will be occupying Federation Square on the 15th of October.

How do people here at HC feel about this (for lack of a better word) protest? Are you part of the 99%? Tell us about how you live and how that relates to these movements.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, or don't have an opinion yet, please check these sites:

Occupywallstreet.org

Some of these little stories are really sad.
We are the 99%

Occupy Together

Fond regards,
The Baron.

Good luck to the protesters.

I don't think there are any plans for such here, people seem happy with all the bullsnow they feed us.

Demonstrations aren't really my style as they tend to also attract a lot of people that are just bored and feel like being part of something exciting, but I suppose showing some kind of interest is better than showing none at all. If people are upset with the way monetary institutions are handling things, the only way they're ever going to have a hope of change is by installing fairly radically different politicians.

OWs is a name of a taxi company nearby.

I don't use it.

as for Occupy wallstreet, good luck to the protestors, but I doubt much is going to be heard.

Erm that is kinda different as the people had lived in openly oppressive dictatorships for something around 40 years?

The only difference is that we live in a 'Closed opressive government'.

I was actually in Egypt before and during the Egyptian revolution (I was very nearly blown up!) and to be honest, most people held a very similar view to the ones you are expressing now - namely, that things were just the way they were and there was piss all they could do about it.

What is the motivation for NOT participating in these kind of movements?
Is it that you:
Fundamentally disagree with what they are saying;
believe that it will not be affective, and therefore be a waste of your valuable time;
disagree with how it is trying to achieve its goals;
don't have an opportunity to participate from where you are located;
simply don't care.

Well I don't know much about Finland, but have you checked the Occupy Together site?

I have never been an activist, however I do feel the winds of change after accidentally chasing some revolutions around the middle-east. Those 99% people certainly seem like they're being oppressed...

I think most people simply don't care. Especially westerners who live in a relative comfort and know no want or need. That is ofcourse, excluding the lower classes of a society but they have been taught to seek their way out through crime or hard work rather than political awareness.

In such modern societies, only youths that are still moved by ideals may protest. See them OWS people now, how many of them are older than 30?

Well, it doesn't matter. Soon enough, even the complacent will need to rise. Your days of plenty are simply coming to an end and there's going to be a rude awakening in the entire west. Can't wait!

I think the youth of the people at the OWS has to do with the responsibility of those with families who simply can't afford to have a voice, because taking the time to stop work might literally kill your children. Most of the people who protested in the middle-east were young. It is the young and disillusioned who have the driving anger and/or sadness combined with the freedom from responsibility that allows them to protest.

The older people have mostly resigned themselves to their fate... such is the curse of our gilded cage.

If it is sufficient important for you, then you'll in principle have to represent that missing viewpoint.

That's the reason I wrote "in principle", yet your reply made it seem like I wrote "simply".

No one said it'd be easy. Life's not easy. Despite that, you get some opportunities others don't get. Heck just by being a human and not any other animal, your chance of actually being able to something about the state of your life have increases tremendously.
