Your Ideal Hero 1-2 Punch?
"Who's your favorite hero?" is a question we've batted around on these boards numerous times before.
My question: after choosing your primary hero, from a strategy standpoint, who would be your ideal choice for a secondary hero?
Example: if I'm playing Necropolis, a preferred 1-2 punch of mine would be the pairing of Vidomina (or Isra) with Galthran. V/I are ideal for early game creeping, clearing wandering creatures and raising skeleton stacks in a relatively short span of time, then passing those stacks along to Galthran, who can more efficient use of them as he levels up.
Alternately, I like pairing a diplomat like Cyra with Galthran (assuming I'm lucky enough to recruit Cyra in Necropolis on week one). Cyra recruits wandering monsters, brings them back for skeleton farming, then Galthran reaps the benefits. You get the idea.

If you play with diplo allowed, I would take any hero starting with diplo as main for at least a week. Then,when I got a big fat army I would develop a good old might main that I would recruit for gold from topes I took, hehe.
If diplo is not allowed, then usually any faction can appreciate a necromancer as a secondary. Just give him a bit of troops and he can take care of anything in AI spawns without losing anything important.
And finally a hero with 4-th level damage spell can prove useful wth just a tiny bit of effort on your part.

+350 gold hero. Resource heroes don't give needed materials. Magic hero for quicker change for TP or DD, if everything goes Kyrre whit Roland is nice dimpo,log combo.
Wog and I think Hota has the option to choose what hero pops up in the tavern. Having 7 x +350g guys gives you 2450g/day it's ridiculess.

Shakti as a starting hero for a strong starting army, with Gunnar as an overall main hero. No question about it -- starting with up to 3 stacks of Troglodytes on Day 1 and putting them on a hero who has Tactics and Logistics. Can't get much more painful than that...
Or can it?

If Luna allowed, sure. Really nice clearing part of map without an army.
Also firewall is great for farming demons.
Ayden can be nice sub if you find force-field. Also good for walking in the right direction in the beginnning with view earth.
Otherwise any strong might hero like Hack or Tazar should be a good secondary with chaining. As secondary, Sir Mullich seems ok too.

It would be impractical but better for me if players could just choose what heroes they want to select rather than have 2 choices from the Tavern. Impractical because all would want the same heroes, more or less

Personally I like it that you need to do with what you get, there is so many random elements which will influence the game you'll be playing and to me is part of these details contributing to homm3's replayability.
However, maybe I should point out there is an ERA cheat allowing you to invite whichever hero you want in tavern, never used it though.

I also like the random element, otherwise everyone would choose the same heroes over and over, which would lead to boring preditable play. Sometimes I wish for a third hero choice in tavern or when leveling up, when both choices suck. But if I get stuck with something below average, I just gotta make the best of it.

An interesting question, to which I could have answered properly many years ago.
But for a very long time I've been playing full random only (I only choose starting bonus: gold if the game it's on Impossible, artifact if it's on Expert). But some 350 gold/day hero is a good thing most of the times; some resource hero for the appropriate town is not bad, as well (Sephinroth for Stronghold, Saurug for Tower etc).
And, as Galaad said above, it's very nice to be able to make best with what you are offered.

Invite-Tavern mod allows another cheat that turns it unsuable, you can dismiss an hero and invite him again in the same day with full movement. I've explored more then a third of a XL map first day (main with Brute for commander) when I got the trick right. Plus, Logistics and Logistics specialty bonus are acualized everytime.
Hiring and dismissing so many heroes is one of the reasons I started to value so much Scholar secondary hero. Combine that with Eagle Eye 1 and I get all level 1 to 4 spells first day.

Scholar I like too, probably the most out of the skills I wouldn't pick on my main hero, along with Scouting.

I play necro, so I've recently playing with Straker and Galthran.
I've always like Isra and Thant, or even Tamika.

Galthran is so superior it's not even funny in my opinion. Compare him to a barbarian, his attack stat may be lower, but does the barbarian have 10+ more attack? Doubtful.

Ĺuna/Galthran/Shakti/Kyrre/Bron/reso specialist. Depends on map, faction, time elapsed, availability... Pity Conflux has bad main heroes. Sprite rush with Luna compensates for a while, but not for long.

Kyrre or Mephala for Rampart. Recently i like Kyrre more, Mephala got Leadership, which is completely useless to waste on sec. skill.
Neela or Solmyr for Tower, depending on map, conditions.
Orrin for Castle, or if rules allow, Sir Mullich
Nymus for Inferno, or Zydar for secondary or main, depending, for might or magic hero.
Shakti for dungeon while need to rush, or Gunnar while L or XL map,
Isra or Galthran for Necro,
Tazar for Fortress, sometimes Alkin, witch almost never use there,
Hack for Stronghold, also like Dessa,
Conflux no real idea, which are good heroes there

Very good choices.
For Conflux, I like Monere and Grindan.
And apart from your picks, I also am partial to heroes like:
Valeska, Adela for Castle;
Ivor and Elleshar for Rampart;
Iona, Aine for Tower;
Ayden and Pyre for Inferno, although I still like Xyron's original portrait a lot
Gunnar and Deemer, Dungeon ;
Gurnisson and Tyraxor for Stronghold;
Vokial and Vidomina for Necro, my Dad always took Isra and Thant.
For Fortress, I never played that much with them to know, except Tazar that everyone knows, and Bron who starts with level 4 stack
And I don't say no to Gold specialists, whoever they are, or Resource, if I require it.
