Poll Question:
What kind of Heroes fan are you?

After so many years the franchise has seen different approaches, with different dev teams and publishers, what is your stance (if you have one) in regard of the Heroes games that have officially seen the day, how do you feel about each title, what are the features you prefer? The ones you abhor? Are you happy, sad or indifferent with the current state of the brand? Is there one title you can put above all others? Do you like them all? Do you have any opinion on gameplay, art direction and/or lore? In short, what kind of Heroes fan are you and can you say why?

1) The "any Heroes game is good to have and play, no matter how bad it is" fan.

You just love the MM series no matter what, even if a title is a huge pile of poo you will enjoy it and add it to your collection because of the license.

2) The NWC master race fan.

You consider any game post NWC era is pure heresy and are cursing Ubi for what they've done with the brand.

3) The H2 loyalist.

Even H3 didn't cut it, the new graphics, upgrade systems and other features coming after latest H2 expansion can't make you feel the spirit as strong as the 2nd iteration.

4) The pro-Ubi traitor fan.

You enjoy the Ubi iterations more than the originals, you consider Ashan lore as a blessing and never really enjoyed the gameplay and atmosphere of NWC games anyway.

5) The H4 was the way to go fan.

You consider H4 to be a masterpiece and a true evolution of the series and praise its innovations to the highest skies, you wish for a sequel of that one.

6) The H3 Holy Grail fan.

You consider anything coming after the third opus as abominations, one after the other, the amount of bad decisions baffles you.

7) The MMH6 fanatic.

For you that iteration is simply the best, you never had more fun in any other title than in this one!

8) The Griffin eternal fan.

3D environment, initiative system, racials, you can't think of any thing previous games did better than this one.

9) The pro-HOMM anti-MMH fan

For you all games coming before the new MMH trend are worth it and you consider V to be the latest great title of an amazing series, at maybe the exception of IV, or not, please precise.

10) The MMH7 fan

What? This is the "best-of" we all wanted!

My closest description would be pro-HOMM/anti-MMH. To be fair, I didn't play Heroes VI and VII, but by the looks of it, I didn't miss anything (sign me out from buggy and hasted games).

Heroes V was rather lacking, IMO, but I don't feel a need to hate it. Or Heroes IV, for that matter, which I believe to be a victim of circumstances (were it given a little more time, it would've been a very good sequel).

Of course, Heroes III rules

No 9 of course. Not like there are many real options H2 and H3 are the pillars of the series (with H4 offering some interesting possibilities to variable levels of success) but it was H5 that set the standards for homm evolution.

Would go with 9 for me as well, but I feel the labeling of the options is biased so I prefer not to participate.

I don't think many people would admit to being anything other than option #9 anti-MMH even if true,

I'd lean towards an NWC master race fan, I believe in having respect for original creators of a property,
I think the series was at its best under the NWC team and although it would be great if someone like Katauri made even better games for the series, Ubival, Ubihole and Ubilimb are not talented enough to be on that level (H5 is a strong game now but mostly thanks to fans taking them to task and doing half the work) lol

but I voted for #9 anyway because Erwin is so bad lol

This poll is extremely biased, don't you think?

The very fact that you call pro-Ubi's 'traitors' and NWC 'master race' is enough to kill off the neutrality and objectivity of this poll, which is quite a shame because the introduction to it makes it look like you're trying to achieve a neutral and objective approach, which you also advocate later on. It would have been better to write "NWC fan" and "Ubisoft fan", for instance. That's clear enough and doesn't show your personal taste right off the bat. If you want a peaceful, and above all respectful code of conduct in this thread, you set the wrong example . Of course the Ubi-players won't see themselves as traitors, and you sure as hell won't brand them as such.

That being said, I voted on the very first option in this poll. Does that surprise anyone? I think so, but to be very honest, if presented with a choice like the one above - be it at gun point or not - I would not vote for any individual installment. Not even MMH6, despite it being my focus of preference. I used to have a number of games on my computer, all of which were uninstalled over the course of time. Not the Heroes games...and I don't fully understand why. I played games before that, like Warcraft II, but even that game didn't have enough nostalgia points to remain behind. What makes Heroes special to me, I think, is the fact that I 'met' the third one at a friend's house and that my brother played Heroes 4 too. One old game soon returned, however but that's not relevant for this thread. I don't want to lose the old games, even though I don't play them often. Having them in my reach is a calming thought.

From where I stand, every Heroes game is good in its own way. However, it is worth comparing one to another, and pointing out the good and bad sides of each game compared to its predecessors/successors. And by doing so you eventually reach a point where you think that one game is better than the other because of reasons A, B and C. That's good, everyone prefers a specific thing. Heroes 3, for instance, feels like reading and 'living' a book when you play the campaigns. Heroes 6 feels like watching a movie when you play the campaigns. Text boxes and cutscenes or dialogues all contribute to a specific feeling that make the games worth playing. Heroes 3, with its variety in resources, offers a diverse champion-gameplay and management. Heroes 6, with only crystals as its special resource, makes conquering (and holding) the mines a priority. Also, it makes you focus more on in-town trading to get your stuff. I haven't even put 4 and 5 into the equation.

Voting on the first option might seem odd because I advocate H6 wherever I go, but to be honest I set my preferences to that game because I feel like I have more experience in it. I know what I'm doing, but I will likely get my ass handed to me as soon as I go against a human opponent rather than the AI. Can you imagine my skill level in the previous games... . It has its own niche in the Heroes Pantheon, as do the others, as will H7, and whatever comes next. I play the series because I know the games will be fun, because of what's in every one of them.

Heroes 2 is classic, good game. I love it and still play it from time to time

Heroes 3 is the game I played the most. I loved it's campaigns, single scenarios and random maps. WoG brought new dimension to the game that opened up a lot of possibilities. And then came HotA <3 / I like everything in that game, and the major plus was map editor and campaign editor. I had fun with them almost as much as with playing the game.

Heroes 4 was different, but I liked it. However, it had a lot of flaws: AI, exploits, imbalances... Yet, I enjoy playing the game.

Heroes 5 also brought many new things to the table, some of them which were good, some were not so good. What I like is skill system, which is, imo, the best to this day, alternative upgrades and the fact that they used Heroes 3 for the base of the game. Unfortunately, it had it's flaws: setting (stupid Ashan), 3D (didn't work too good), damn slow AI, campaigns that were more RPG that TBS and the fact that game forces you to use only one faction (because of faction skills). However, I still enjoy the game, and with MMH5.5 mod, the game became much better and enjoyable.

And then came H6... Where do I start... Maybe skill tree? Or Creature pool? 5 factions? 4 resources? Color coding of everythign? Idioticly stupid AI? The fact that every map of the campaign turned to: capture more towns, convert them to your own and the moment you have at least one more town than your opponent, it is guarantee wind? I also dislike area of control and the fact that artwork is Warcraft like (Arthas vampire anyone?). Oh, I almost forgot about the bugs that basically prevented me to even play the game.

I thought that I will hate H6 the most, and that it is the worst, but Ubi proved me wrong. Recycle of Might and Magic: Heroes 7 came, that was basically one big deja vu. Reused assets, almost the same skill 'wheel', bugs, stupid AI that was unable to use wait until patch 1.8 (I still don't know if it is ok to laugh because of that?). I could go on and on, but it is pointless, everything was already said.

The saddest thing for me was that they have perfectly good basis (Heroes 5) for a good Heroes game, and they decided to ignore it.

So, in the end, I have to vote for 9, as it perfectly sums up my point of view

9 too but I am not anti H6 or H7. They just don't interest me much, but I can say that about H5, excellent game but the 3D and me is not a good mixture, then H4 which looks fantastic but rather confused game play. It lacks the option: you like H3 but too lazy to play others.

Call me names but it is 5 (YES, five).
I truly think Heroes IV was the way to go. Of course, as someone interested in AI I wonder: how would one makes it so that AI players armies played better then neutral units, specially when AI player army could be with no heroes and neutrals could have a general with magic skills, spells and special artifacts.
I also felt the lack of specialties and so special heroes.

i would've picked #8, but i picked #6, because i like homm2 as well(and even homm1, tho it kicked my ass). 3 is definitely my favorite, tho. it just can't be beat, imo. and the modding platforms for it make it even better. actually, the modding platforms are what shoot it to the stars; whereas it would just be merely #1 in my book, without modding capabilities(). but the modding capabilities are what keep the game lasting, for me. there's just so much that can be done with it now. and those modding capabilities will only get better with time, i think.

edit: i had somehow confused #8 as strictly homm3. i think now that that was entirely the opposite. damnit galaad; i just woke up.

edit 2: i'd've picked 2, but i wanted to stay positive. 6 is the same as 2, really; just with more positive wording and a lean towards homm3.

4 would've been the way to go imo. Although I don't play the game a lot, because the flaws it has really break it for me. But I'm sure developing a second, advanced Homm 4 would make a great game.
My ranking would be 2, 3, 4, 1, 6, 5, 7

Someone please put the H6 or H7 graphics into 5 and I would like 5 as well.
