if i see a dude in a wig and he clearly isn't going to a Halloween party, i'm not going to talk to him anyway. i avoid the mentally ill when i can. you won't see me striking up conversations with people who have clearly lost touch with reality.

so i guess my own opinion is pretty moot.

call me God, then. or Master. My Lord, is another option.

Me too.

Me too.

Proles, peasants and plebeians need to be taught manners.

You only address me as 'my lord', 'your grace' or other honorific used when talking to nobility.

Having hanged around at LGTB people quite a lot, literally one time was my pronoun usage corrected. I was having (lots of) drinks and talking to this girl, laughing and somewhere in the middle of the conversation she goes "oh btw, I prefer to be called he nowadays". She laughs and says "I know, shocking". And I was wow, I literally had no idea, ok cool. Other trans people I have met were just drunk, enjoying life, and not interested in pronouns lol.

I am not sure how using these pronouns affects your personal life, unless this happens to you constantly because it upsets you so

Anyhow, mostly trans people want to be seen as people. Pronoun usage comes after that.

Well yeah, but those who "care" might sue you even if you unintentionally say something and things can get hairy.

The focus on how to define people in conversations is becoming intrusive.

I think decent people try to be civil. But this is all becoming so confusing and passive-aggressive (or sometimes directly aggressive) that it's really hard to follow...

At the end of the day it will only damage human interactions.

If they wanted to be seen as normal people, you would never even know they are trans/non-binary/genderqueer/crapqueer, but instead, as anyone else, give them due respect for their skills, talents and achievements. Or not if they haven't any.

But that's it, some big mouthed activists realized this is a comfortable way to jump the line of meritocracy, so instead of proving what they can do, they terrorize people about not calling them the right pronoun, as that brings an artificial and short-lived spotlight on themselves.

I just don't think this is a realistic fear.

Has this been the experience for you personally? Like I said, during all my life, it has happened to me once, and it was a polite thing she just asked, not demanded.

It has happened several times. Both against individuals, and against groups. But even if legal action was not a possibility, ostracisation is bad enough.

Now imagine the same person wouldn't "take offense" in what you said directly, but started to badmouth you in your group. Or if that person demanded it but you wouldn't comply?

Because the place I work in has high inclusion standards we need to be very careful in what we say. Some cases were justified (I think). There were a few instances where a person was cautioned, there was even one when some disciplinary actions might have been taken, but it ended up in settlement (turns out the person had some social issues and didn't know what to say or not). I was unwittingly drawn in to such a case just because I was standing there with that person no matter if I agreed with him or not (you can take my word for it that I didn't take part in it), but someone on good terms with the management took offense in what he said and didn't even communicate it, he reported it. I only realized it when my peer told me to "adhere" from discussing some topics aloud because actions have been taken. You might say "all is well for me" now, but I clearly was engaged in a case I wasn't part of and it could've gone in different direction (at the end of the day it would be word against word). It was a well known case though so the guy was ostracized between the workers. And taking his side officially might get you in trouble, because once someone is deemed an offender there is not much you can say.

Now who can now tell what is considered offensive to someone until something like this happens? It's not easy to comprehend cus there are cultural differences and judging by how dynamically it's changing elsewhere people don't even have awareness what can or can't be said anymore until it's too late (and legal actions are taken). I think this is exploited unfortunately...

Ok, give me links where someone has unintentionally used a wrong pronoun, and it directly lead to all the horrible things you said. And how common is this?

@blob2. Well, doesn't that happen to almost everybody? Someone has an issue with you and they complain, no matter what the reason. This reason seems just as trivial as all the rest ones, I don't see why this is such a big deal.

Btw, do you still have hundreds of areas of land around Poland where you are not allowed to even step foot, if you are gay? I think I read about it sometime ago.

The problem starts when you refuse to use the pronouns you are asked for. This called compelled speech, and it already takes ground in Canada, Bill C-16, 2016.

"accidental misuse of a pronoun would be unlikely to constitute discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act, but "repeatedly, consistently refus[ing] to use a person’s chosen pronoun" might. Commercial litigator Jared Brown said that imprisonment would be possible if a complaint were made to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, the Tribunal found discrimination had occurred, the Tribunal ordered a remedy, the person refused to comply with the order, a contempt proceeding were brought in court, and the court ordered the person imprisoned until the contempt had been purged "

So we talk here about prison if I refuse to call someone by the gender he is identified in his ID card (majority of cases), instead of calling him by the gender he/she imagines he/she is.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Act_to_amend_the_Canadian_Human_Rights_Act_and_the_Criminal_Code

See, things go pretty fast, first they call to your empathy and compassion, then comes the hammer if you tell them to snow off.

There is literally one town which declared it's a "free LGBT zone". Now they are the laughing stock of an enitire country and the mayor is salty they did it. End of story.

We have other problems, like our ruinous and greedy government destroying our economy... and Russian army almost at our the gates.

Rachel Levine is a murderer who absolutely does not deserve the promotion she's getting, but she's still a woman. Again, brain chemistry like artu said. It's really not that hard of a concept to understand.

As for the law you posted, Sal, doing that would be harassment which is already illegal. To be clear I think it's a stupid law that's bordering on violating free speech and is certainly beyond the acceptable realm of punishment, but it's not the dystopian horror show you're treating it as. It's just an expansion of existing harassment laws to specifically encompass deliberate and continuous harassment of trans people. And not every trans person is able to pass in a way that will be satisfactory to you. That doesn't diminish that their brain chemistry makes them trans, and you should still treat them like a person.

If you truly believe that what you said to correspond to factual reality, you're as mentally ill as Rachel Levine.
