Heroes 3 on Win11
Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, I am going to have to buy a new computer soon and I found that there are some already that come with Windows 11 directly installed. I will use it mainly for work, streaming etc. but I would also like to still play Heroes 3 on it (the only game that I have installed and that I need). So my question is: Does anyone have any experience with installing and running Heroes 3 on Windows 11?
The versions I own (besides two physical copies of Heroes 3 vanilla and Heroes 3 Complete somewhere) and that I'm playing are:
- GOG's Heroes 3 Complete (I always play it using the HD+ mod, so I would also love to know if that mod works on Windows 11)
- GOG's Heroes Chronicles
- HotA (again, I am always using that in combination with the HD+ mod)
If they don't work I might just buy a new computer that comes with Windows 10 (fortunately, most are still shipped with that) and wait with the upgrade until there might be a workaround/updates that make the games compatible with the new OS.

GoG versions of Heroes 3 Complete are already made to work with Win 10, and since Win 11 is not much diffrent comparing to Win 10, it will work. HD Mod is often updated and HotA probably this New Year Eve get 1.7 update.

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I believe as well, that the GoG versions will be compatible (or will be made compatible) and that the HD+ and HotA modders will make sure that their mods will be compatible with the new OS but I wanted to be sure. So, have you already had any actual experience or are those assumptions?

Yeah today Win10 to tuner. Win7 is a history. I'm from Finland, and you know legendary Jimm's store. Ok remember the temporary solution is DosBox or later/newer. If you are using a supercomputer such as MAC Os 1.5Tb memory, etc or Win10 64-bit 128Gb memory, etc will work 40% of the game. DosBox wouldn't help. I think so. Because of DosBox supports Dos. In the future WinBox?! Ok Win11 starts in the 2023, when Microsoft supports Win10 until end 2023. Save your old computer for playing Heroes3 without internet. Using a USB memory stick, etc if needs.. No virus! Someone uses tablet, and computer updates Win, etc

Yes, I guess I will keep my old computer for a while and see how things go.

I'm going to disagree with you. W7 will be updated until 2023.
1st. A lot of my "friends" have Windows source code, so we can make our own private Windows.
2nd. A lot of people are using XP SP4, Vista SP2 and W7 SP2 (like me) not only offline.
I have 3 lapotps with XP, Vista & W7 (downgraded from W10 for stability & usability reasons).
Windows XP is really fast for gaming especially or H3.
I think I don't need W8, W81, W10, W11, W12, W13, W14, Wx ...
I have base W7, so I don't need new icons & sounds.
BTW if you want to make W7 SP2 you need to install KB3020369 & kb3125574-v4 aka "Convenience rollup update", but to showi it in prefs you need to make something like this:
Changing Service Pack Level from Registry (after rollup-update installed):

For W7 updates for example use Simplix UpdatePack 7.

Aha.. I don't know, but one guy created/made Install W7 SP3 cd. I have a cd. Hmm another Vista repair cd from another guy, it doesn't work on a new SSD. I haven't a original Vista. And I bought Win10, when I followed Jimm's store.

Can't you just run a compatibility check and then click the appropriate box for Win 7 Vista, Win 8, or 10? (With the proper service pack required also.)

I'm using Windows 11 and the game is running fine tho. Just install the DirectPlay that it requires.

Regarding the versions you own, such as GOG's Heroes 3 Complete and Heroes Chronicles, there's a good chance they will work on Windows 11. Compatibility modes and tweaks might be necessary, but the game should still be playable.

Nice to hear that H3 still works on Win11.. Ok I told Jimm's PC-store, in there computers with Win11 Home, so I recommend you buy a Win11 Home. Then H3 runs smooth!
